By some ill-fated circumstance, Edgar never noticed that America occasionally shared his penchant for beach scavenging. In truth, it was simpler than it seemed - the rumors of treasure encouraged him to search for something worthy for his princess.

They each began to displace some sand.
Mimsy was successful in locating some sort of runic device. It resembled a centrifuge, perhaps, but was very clearly missing some vital parts, if that was indeed what it was.
She would later discover that it was a pressure cooker, and considered for a passing moment if she should not have skipped out on the home ec elective to double up on AP Physics II and AP Biochem.
Of course not. That would have been absurd.
