The brief moment of calm reprieve ended rather abruptly. This was mere practice, nothing more than fun, and so they could enjoy such small liberties as taking a moment to enjoy the breeze... but the blood was still pumping and their blades were still drawn. Until this spar was concluded they should not let their minds wander far. " En guarde!" ' En guarde yourself.' Choices choices... a man on his guard was a difficult thing to strike from the front. A thrust was one of the most difficult types of strike to parry but one of the easiest to evade if timed properly. Maximos couldn't have expected it to strike true and was likely only using it to close the distance; with that in mind Joshua responded by stepping in as well-- with a quick shift of his footing the demon slid his right behind his left and stepped in; pivoting on the ball of his foot and lifting his heel as his hips and shoulders turned sideways, the tip of the shadow's blade touching for an instant to the exact place he had wanted it to on the left side of Joshua's chest before it cut a thin and shallow line of black from there to the right shoulder. By the time Maximos completed his second step and Joshua completed his first they would meet in the middle; the half-dressed man using the clockwise turn his shoulders had started to snap down his left elbow onto the guarding forearm in order to force it down three to four inches or more. Then, bringing back the motion that he had just taken starting by pivoting his right foot back and planting the heel firmly upon the ground he pushed back; driving the force of his legs through realigned knees to torque his hips and turn his shoulders, a complete reversal of the core body rotation he had just done a moment ago ending by slamming the heel of his right palm into his left fist in order to drive his elbow backwards into the shadow's nose or chin with more speed and force than he would have been able to manage in the short distance his arm had to move. At one time years ago Joshua had given the other reaper a one-inch black eye... today he would deliver a one-inch broken nose. Already the wound beneath the black line on his chest was beginning to knit together again, and his rear foot would shove off from the ground again, preparing to follow-up his movement... It was only a taste, a nibble at best and yet no matter how minuscule it was a feeling that every swordsman knew that feeling. It was the unmistakable sensation of a blade drawing first blood, the touch, the sudden give, if you listened close enough there was even a sound to be heard as the skin parted and before began to cry vitae. Max drew in a sharp breath as his motion came to a close in preparation for the next. He could smell it, blood in the crisp air as explicitly evident as a red blood in fresh white snow. It was life, being spilled, and as only life can, the smell made Maximos feel alive. Ahh, the little things. One must always take time to consider the little things.
But not too much time. Joshua' was already advancing. The Shadow's left arm began to glide out to his left clearing a bit of striking distance from the black blooded demon. And with a flick, discarding any bloody remnants. When performing a thrust one never returns along the same telegraphed path in which they struck. Maximos had several possible counter's and follow throughs in mind, but as per usual, before his foot hit the ground a second time Joshua had shattered each and every one of them.
Maximos found an elbow, snapped and pressed thoroughly into his guard shoving it down. And Joshua was in. Just like that there were several options open to the Shadow.
Option one, a quick retreat, he would take some but not all of the intended blow. Both parties would start off fresh, neither in an optimal position for simply rolling into another attack. Option two, attempt to force the elbow in an off direction, toss his body weight to either side and roll or strafe free. This left him a bit more open for attack than option one, but left him unscathed. Or option three. Press self destructively forward taking the maximum amount of damage but in turn being offered a chance to deal and equivalent if not exceeding amount.
Maximos had decided on option three before he had even finished describing it. His mismatched eyes met Joshua's down the length of the other man's own arm. And he was smiling. His balled tight fist loosened. His foot came to a pause halfway through his pivotal second step. Facing an elbow cocked and inches from his face, Maximos leaned forward into the oncoming blow. The effect made it less as if Joshua had impacted Maximos' nose straight on like a bat, and more as the other Reaper's arms were infact a hammer and chisel striking from point blanc and driving and already home attack, even farther in. There was, without a doubt, an audible and tangible crunch.
As could be expected of anyone, Maximos' teeth gritted and his eyes instinctively smashed shut. It was as if a water balloon had splashed into his face splashing fluid across his cheeks and forehead and mouth. Only instead of fluid, it was red hot pain, and instead of a water balloon it was Razliek's unforgiving elbow. And yet that where Maximos' reaction stopped following what would have been expected of anyone else.
Much like as if it had been a water balloon tossed in the summer air for fun and laughs, Maximos was grinning. His lips pulled back, his teeth bared and stained pain as was most of his upper lip and cheeks. He was laughing, nothing boisterous yet just something a tad below a chuckle. And he was moving. The momentum had not yet stopped carrying his head backwards, his neck had just begun to give...And his right arm snapped into motion. It did not punch or kick but grabbed, aiming to sink its talons into Joshua' bicep and steal a grip.
Maximos pulled on said grip, tugging his body forward. His head was cocked back, his eyes still shut, but since when did a Reaper stop and attack because of pain or blindness? Never. With a black iron grip on Joshua' left arm, combined with Maximos' previous forward momentum the Shadow his backwards jerk cold. The elbow and nose never broke contact. His head still inches from from Joshua' arm when his eyes began to open. If the other Reaper meant to move that arm, he meant to get all sorts of in the way.
Max's right foot touched down behind him, and immediately he shoved ahead with his left and forward. His left arm was already in rightward motion, the entire response was brutally fluid. His sword was a flash of black aiming to dig deep vicious line from left to right across the demon prince's exposed stomach. Or depending on how it struck, to entrench itself in his flank. Regardless, with his steely grip, the bloodied shadow had no intention of seeing any new space between both men until blood was again spilled for blood.

He would never cease to amaze. He would always bring another surprise. He would not... he could not disappoint. If given an inescapable situation he would not try to escape but would find a way to win even while trapped. That was the true essence of unpredictability, and that was why the shadow was the only person who could make him feel this way about a battle. Joshua pivoted on his right foot in preparation for pushing forward but his preparation did not serve him; Maximos did not evade so Joshua could not pursue, Maximos was not blown back so Joshua could not advance, Maximos pushed through and Maximos advanced despite his damage - attacking the opening that is always left when an opponent goes on the offensive. His right foot raised but instead he was forced to step back onto it as the shadow drove forward further. There is no such thing as a perfect offense and defense. Any time an attack is made it leaves an opening that can be exploited, but many times the only way to take advantage of that opportunity is simply to be more skilled. Their levels were too close for that though, so in exchange for skill Maximos chose to sacrifice his body. Maximos His left arm was already in rightward motion, the entire response was brutally fluid. Maximos had trapped his arm with that bothersome thing he wore grafted onto his shoulder, he had struck low knowing that the sword Joshua held in his hand would not be able to fend off his blade, and his attack would have been certain death to any mortal man... but he was not fighting a mortal man. The defense was equally cold. Opening his left hand Joshua let the azure weapon fall... and then grasped it by the blade in a clenched fist. The shadow's weapon collided with the sword just above the crossguard and slid down into it, forcing the hilt bluntly against Joshua's exposed side as black blood ran down the crystal edge of the blade from the deep lacerations that were carved into his left hand from his own sword. But this was not enough. This feeling was not nearly enough. His fist clenched tighter around the blade's edges, his knuckles growing white as dark ichor welled up from between his fingers and overflowed across the scarcely clawed nails on his hand. His pointed teeth ground together forcefully as the demon's lips peeled back to their utmost limit in a fanged grin and the sound that issued forth from his throat was almost like a sigh... if a sigh could ever reflect the feeling of utmost exhilaration that was embodied in that grunt. His knee turned again. His hips turned. His right palm swung in. And for the second time the heel of his hand slammed home into the knuckles of his left and delivered another jarring impact. The sound of dull cracking accompanied the impact, the blade's edge sinking into flesh and bone; scraping the skin and muscle from his fingers and digging in deeply to the heel of his hand. ...but the chisel was already set, it did not need to be placed against the stone again; all that remained was to swing the hammer again... and again... until the stone wall in front of him gave in. It wasnt with a grunt of frustration that Maximos' blade met Joshua's but with a hearty laugh. That sound, that sound was one of the most decadent this world had to offer. Joshua never ceased to satisfy, he beautifully countered Maximos' attack while at the exact same time causing a blood to flow, so very close that Maximos could smell it and little else. And then the battle flowed on. Maximos, he was a creature of experience. Not as in wisdom or learning over ages. Maximos loved to experience. He loved to see, to feel, to taste new things. He had sent so very much of his life experience the world through a numbly deprived glove of shadow body that now that he was gifted with flesh he delved in it. Ever detail that he could catalog was stored safely away for later. In this, Maximos noted every detail of a fight that he could, and enjoyed every detail. As such...Maximos, especially in combat had gained a certain level of distaste for repetition. He was a strategist, and so when truly enjoying himself he disliked forseeing the outcome of an attack. As such, Joshua's right hand came smashing forward and Maximos took the breath to say. "Morgiv mye." Which was not a spell word or something in ancient Arian, but the result of attempting to speak an apology with a broken nose. The Shadow's right arm twitched for blood, but he was rather sated to simply wear armor for this experience and not unleash the viscous flesh warping dark steel beast. Instead, as Joshua's right arm came lashing forward, Maximos' right arm released Joshua's left bicep. Though let no one be confused into thinking he freed the arm. The pressure was still on. Max shoved off his left foot and forward as he leaned in closing the space between both men to nearly nothing. Joshua's elbow would strike, not Maximos' nose, but the air on the right side of the shadow's face as Max leaned in until he was inches from the Demon. A blood stained grin and mismatched eyes meeting the other man's evenly. Using the momentum of his sudden shove forward, Maximos would swing his sword further inward. His right arm, joining his left, twisting his sword away from the opposing crystal weapons cross guard. Max's weight rolled to his right foot as it leaned right. Again, hips, core, shoulders, his entire upper body swung rightward adding maximum force to the blade and kicking up a shower of indigo, and azure sparks as Maximos' jet black blade rasped against the full length of Joshua's blade aiming to slice clean through his unprotected hands. As well as whatever might be caught in the 1 - 2.5ft past wake past where long sword met the blue blade. As the slash climbed higher, Max pressed backwards off the ball of his right foot, pivoting on his left. His boots digging securely into the grass as he slipped his right foot back stealing away a bit of precious space, lessening his cutting range but allowing him to end the slashing motion neatly in a high guard. His right hand above his left hand, a bit above his face albeit and off slightly to the right between head and shoulder. His sword would be angled down in front of him, right to left across his upper body, with the flat forward reflecting the dying sun in its sheening blade. In, shove and cut, and then back out and prepare. It was simple, but the best things usually are. There was an electrical sounding crackle from the vicinity of Maximos' nose. " I'm sorry." He said with a highly nasal, as if he had a cold. He blew out a sharp breath spilling blood across his lips and chin. His nose, seemed properly formed. A bit of shadow play to hold it together while doing nothing to fix the injury or ease the pain. He did not spot smiling. His voice evened out to normal as he continued to speak. " Were we supposed to make such a mess, already? I havent rushed things have I?"

The hammer struck the chisel once again, but the chisel met no resistance as the stone was already gone. Maximos had managed to move the impassable wall in the time that it took the hammer to strike, and the speed at which he moved and countered was nothing short of masterful. It was art. This battle itself was nothing short of a beautiful painting brushed in blood, but it was unfinished... there was not enough paint yet on the canvas. More, more, more. Red blood, black blood, spattered and spilled it did not matter what it was as long as there was more of it for the artist to use. Maximos spun quickly and razed his sword up the length of the azure blade in Joshua's grip, tearing through skin and flesh and bone alike in its path upward; barely scratching the back of the knuckles on his right hand but completely severing all of the fingers on his left at the second knuckle before carrying through even further through a few strands of hair-- The demon's right foot sliding back even deeper until his knee nearly touched the ground had dropped his stance enough to duck below the long sword's arc, and poised upon the balls of his feet he was already throwing himself forward to assault yet again as Maximos took a step back to clear the distance. "Rushed? Not at all. When it's messy..." There was no pause and no hesitation, the demon whipped down his hand only so that the black ichor from his severed fingers would run to the ends of his bloodied knuckles and then it lashed out again; charging underneath the high guard with the crystallized blood upon his left hand forming a jagged spike like the head of a spear where there had once been fingers. His right hand was raised up just beneath the guard of the shadow's sword as he rushed in, but his left... that spear launched straight at the Arian's exposed midsection. "...it's all the more fun!" And that is what it is like to fight Joshua. Maximos had made what would be a crippling blow and struck a defensive stance. Fighting anyone else this would have give him a clear fight ending advantage. But not against Joshua. Against Joshua, in the time Maximos took to strike and defend, Joshua had already set himself to pierce that defense and strike back just as brutally. Joshua had strength on his side, while Maximos relied on speed. And yet in this moment the tables were turned absolutely. Joshua had speed, rushing him forward like a demon from the depths of hell, and Maximos had nothing to rely on but his raw strength. A high guard was meant, as it named suggested to block strikes from on high. It gave all the room and leverage necessary to deflect any strike coming to the upper body from the upper body. It left Maximos' right hand firmly on the hilt while his left was grazing it, his fingers touching and ready to clench but at the same time loose allowing flow. It meant that his sword drew a diagonal line from his right shoulder to about his left hip. It also meant Max could turn this into a thrust at any moment, but a thrust at chest height otherwise the blade would just fall awkwardly and be shoved down and away. He hadnt the time to shift his legs for a thrust, he hadnt the heartbeats necessary to turn his hands and make this into a slash. He hadnt the momentum to smack the arm away. All Maximos had time to do was let his arms fall slightly, take a deep breath, and brace. Unlike a shove or a punch, Joshua's hand was a spear, its tip was a spear. It did not shove so much as it dug. The impact rolled through Maximos' entire body and forced him to automatically hunch over the point of penetration right above his belly button. Joshua had dealt Maximos a powerful blow, and yet something in the experience was off. Maximos' teeth clenched and he coughed up red, but along with that red came a plume of what appeared to be black smoke. The jet black breath swirled in the air in wisps and cues and then vanished. What was more, Maximos innards felt more...tacky, than they should have. It was less like Joshua stuck his hand in a person, and more like he had plunged it into a partially dried tar. And it did not bleed. Or rather, what came out of it was not blood so much as inky black tendrils that tried to creep up the demon's hand and arm. Maximos chuckled. And he attacked. Previous to the impact the Shadow had dropped his arms, just a bit. As they were positioned so that his blade crossed his chest, that meant his blade fell a little lower. His grip still on his right side, but instead of the end of his sword being even with his hip area, it was now more even with his knee. And then he was struck, and in being struck he lurched forward, lowering himself yet again. If Joshua was facing him, that meant, that Maximos' sword was right now, very likely, drawing a diagonal line inside the other mans arms. Across the other man's chest. Here to for, the flat of the blade had been pressed forward. Poised as he was, left leg leading and right leg behind, hands in a striking posing, Maximos was in a perfect position to... ...Swing left to right and attempt to lop the demon's head off. But he didnt. Not yet. He jerked off his left, stepping back once and tearing his body backwards and pulling Joshua's hand free like with a wet squelch and a slop of black, as he brought his arms viciously up intending to cut a rather nasty gash straight up the demon's middle, and if he was lucky, across his face. Possibly, enough to shove him back as he cleared space. The shadow laughed, and his laughs came out black. Unlike Razliek, Max had no abilities to heal a ruptured internal organ. His innards spilling outwards could be prevented but a torn intestines or a shredded stomach, was another matter entirely. As such, Max was being forced into stepping backwards. Blood would spill freely from the open hole in Maximos' gullet before black tar gunked the wound close. He was forced to wear armor. Armor, that could keep him fighting while robbing him none of the fight experience. A special kind of armor. Quote: - Armor of the Damned - - Loricatus de DamnoMost armor protects its wielder from attacks. This armor however does not. After breathing in shadow, or using the shadow within Maximos is able to slow and or stop an attack that has pierced him. By hardening the dark around a bullet or blade Max can slow its velocity lessening the damage caused by its travel through his body and by its exit wound. Alternatively swords or blades that have run him through can be stuck firmly inside of his flesh leaving their wielder open to attack. This armor does nothing to actually protect against injury, but rather helps make said injury more advantageous leaving one to wonder who is more damned, the victim or the attacker?

Blood met blood; the hard and black spear was washed over with a new color as it plunged into open flesh, wetting the brush in red paint. But that splash of color did not remain, red did not bleed from the wound but instead a black ooze leaked from it... something that should not have been inside of a human body. Though Joshua had never once expected his opponent to be human on the inside. Humanity was only skin deep, and if the surface is scratched away what one finds beneath it is the true form of a nightmare had by millions. Red was not the color of what was inside of Maximos Lucilien Dark, it was merely what flowed through his veins. He stepped back just as the shadow did; the two mirror images of each other in that aspect alone because as the distance was made the long sword slashed upward through the space and the demon pulled his hand free of the other man's flesh. Black spattered upon the grass as a fingerless hand coated in red and black whipped back to his side, just as it did as the dark blade cut another shallow gash across the demon's chest to bisect the other. Falling into a low stance afterward, Joshua spread his legs and dug his toes into the grass beneath him; a running black cross drawn upon his chest and a slow leak of dark blood that ran from a deep gouge on his jaw to the point of his chin and then fell in thick, dripping gobs. His left hand was held at his side, colored black to the wrist with sticky tar and with four bony fingers stained red at the tips as flesh and sinew began to crawl slowly up the lengths of them. "Point." Had this been a real battle he would have perhaps done things another way. That tar that crept through the shadow's body wouldn't have stopped him from ripping out an organ or two before the sword managed to drive him off. Even against an opponent like Maximos he was confident that at least one part of his human body would be on the ground before he was forced back. But this was not a real battle... their lethal intent with every attack was definitely not for show but this was a spar after all; this was practice. "I claim a point from that. What's the score?" The give of flesh, the way it drew a black line through the air marking the sword's macabre path. Maximos' entire core was a bit of fire, a slash like had just performed relied entirely on the very muscle group that Joshua had just tore his hand through giving the wound not even a moment's respite. And yet, it was that fire that spurred him on. A terrible feeling deep in his gut that told him to stop, and gave him every reason to continue.
He could only imagine it was the same for Joshua. That man was missing a good portion of his hand, he was bleeding. And yet that loss had driven him to seek blood using that same hand and the very blood it spilled. Black blood for a black purpose.
There was a cross on the demon's chest. Now, Maximos did not consider himself a religious man but the very idea of a holy symbol scarred across the other man's chest like some sort of saints masochistic brand made him grin so wide he thought the edges of his mouth might tear to accommodate. Clearly, this was a sign from some God. A blessing upon unholy flesh. He could see it now, playing out in his head. Drop low, a thrust. Pierce the cross. It was a plan, and while his mind searched out the spiderweb of directions to take from that starting plan he knew that once his attack was made, any and every plan went flying out the window. And yet that was the fun of it, wasnt it? His feet began to slide to more appropriate footing, his knees began to bend. Blood. Steel. And pain. It was all he kn--
"Point." What? He stopped, his sword fell tip first to the ground despite still being firmly grasped in both hands and he blinked. And then blinked again.
"I claim a point from that. What's the score?" Score! Practice! How easy it was to lose one's self in it all. Joshua was just that kind of opponent, every swing drove you into the next, every defense committed you to the next attack. There was nothing, or no one else like it.
Max moved his left from the sword and scratched the side of his head. The sopping wet hole that was his stomach stiffened, like a shadowy plug clogging the area and working whatever rudimentary first aid it could. Threads stretched and webbed their way across the hole in his vest pulling the fabric tight and beginning to sow the material whole again. "One nothing."
Maximos said with a quirk of his lips as he noted the nothing was his, the quirk stretched to a smirk as he gestured toward Joshua's hand and said. "Or do we count the fingers? And then is that one, or five? That might bleed you out you know!"
No one counted fingers. Or toes. Or likely even arms for that matter. Max laughed a dark bellowing laugh and wiped the space under his nose with his sleeve. And then he settled back, evening his weight between his feet and dropping his left hand back down to his sword beneath his right. His smirk twist at the edges. "Oh dear, it looks like I'm behind. 'Certainly cant have that."
A short pause to let out another black breath, and watch as it curled and twist into the darkening sky. "I think its your turn, isnt it?"

" Or do we count the fingers? And then is that one, or five? That might bleed you out you know!" "Fingers don't count and you know it," was the answer he got. "Flesh wounds don't count unless it includes an organ or an artery. If you're gonna try for bleeding points Walter gets final say on it." Apparently somewhere along the line one of them had called for a time-out, because while a second ago they had been ready to slice each other open from head to toe they now stood there going over the rules and counting score; Joshua even counted off the fingers of his left hand as he went over the rules of their engagement one by one, unfolding fleshy digits that were still devoid of skin as he spoke. " Oh dear, it looks like I'm behind. 'Certainly cant have that. I think its your turn, isnt it?" "Heh, I suppose it is. Well then..." His right foot slid through the grass underneath the crystal sword that had fallen to the ground beside where he sat now and kicked it up off the ground; catching it by the handle with his right hand and then tossing it with a spin into his left hand to bring the tip towards his opponent rather than the ground. " En guarde!" There were two steps between them but it would only take one before they were in range of each other's blades again. His first step was low, sliding his left foot forward with his body following behind it. The azure blade lashed diagonally from the lower right to the upper left but there was no subtlety or grace involved at all - it was a smash intended to hit fast and hard with no looking back. His right foot slid up behind the left at that and his left slid out again, shuffle-stepping forward a second time to press the distance between the fighters into extreme close range yet again. Unlike what Maximos had done though, his right hand was not raised defensively but instead was at his side with the elbow pulled back and the palm up, crackling lightly with tiny arcs of crimson energy that lifted away from the skin. Walter! Aha! Maximos turned to look at the butler, eyes wide and grinning. It was a hopeful expression. Walter promptly shook his head. Ah well, he would have to do better next time then. And then...
"En guarde!" ...next time was upon him. Maximos pulled his sword back and to his right side, the hilt and both of his hands even with his hips. He slid his right foot back to match, leaving his left foot forward in the face of Joshua's rush. And rush the demon did, he moved in a raw sort of way. It lacked finesse, and yet it did not lack skill. His movement spoke of brutality, of directness, and of pain. Maximos met the attack head on with two of his own. The Shadow shoved off the ball of his right foot tossing his weight onto his left as he broke into a wide and vicious left to right slash. Maximos' entire body backed the blade. He threw himself into the cut, aiming not to actually slice Joshua' but to have their blades meet at the space between both men in a violent cross and halt the blue sword early. The clang of steel and crystal causing a momentary flash to light the immediate area of the quickly darkening arena. Maximos' body was pressed close to his blade, his right shoulder forward, and if assumptions were correct the majority of his sword's blade was jutting out to the right reflecting arcs of red from Joshua's hand in its flat. Max needed the extra support provided by his legs and his stance, as Joshua was the stronger of the two, and because despite the way this slash started by its end only Maximos' left hand gripped the hilt of his sword. The two attacks flowed together. By the time the two swords met, the second attack would, or should have been complete. As Maximos' left hand carried his long sword, his right hand, already even with his hip broke for the hilt of Sha'yd, the shortblade at his back. His hips and upper body twist into the sword attack and Sha'yd burst forward across the space between both men in a sudden thrust. Maximos' stance and motion aiding in driving the shortblade deep into its target. Sha'yd's glass-steel blade sheening silver dull in the pre-night lighting, its edge singing joyfully as it slipped free from its sheath as sharp as any scalpel. If all went right, Maximos would have stopped Joshua's sword attack just long enough to impale the demon through the heart with the 1ft long glass steel blade. His sword would be pressed against Joshua's but stretched between both men. In this crucial moment, his stance was key. Maximos' entire right flank was open and he knew it. Only his footing gave him the possibility of twisting the opposite direction and defending against that ominous hand. That was the plan, and the plan seemed flawless. Though as right as it appeared, deep inside Maximos hoped Joshua would prove it wrong.

The sound of the two blades crashing together was unlike what was expected of them; there was no metallic ring of steel against steel, but instead the lonesome cry of a single sword being struck against something solid and the sound of the other lacing itself through with fractures like a sheet of ice when too much weight was placed upon it. ' Tch. Forgot to reinforce it...' The swords did indeed meet in the middle, each powerful slash impacting onto the other to lock the two weapons dead center between the southpaw swordsmen, but the azure blade that had been carried by the demon up until now had cracked and begun to break; chips flew from it at the moment of collision and a chunk of the tip broke off completely and turned to nothing more than glittering dust caught in the wind. Using weapons that he had made from his own condensed power was something new for him though, and the little details were hard to remember... things like 'this will break if it is not fed' slipped his mind. He had not put any energy into the weapon for a minute or so, and because of that its structure was weakened enough that the exchange had caused it to break apart. No matter though... he could pull swords like that from Maximos' ear like a magician doing parlor tricks. All it took was a little energy and a moment of focus - neither of which he had at the moment. What he did have was a cocked back right arm that was-- His right hand shot across the short space between them; his advancing step and Maximos' own push had left them with little more than an arm's length between their bodies now, just enough room for a fast movement but not enough for a long blade. But what crossed that space happened so quickly that he would have missed it entirely if he hadn't been watching for it... not for Sha'yd to come out, but for Maximos' body to move. In extremely close combat visibility is low, body movements must be read to see the bigger picture as everything is connected and bones do not bend or flex like whips and snakes. The movement of Maximos' right shoulder told him that the shadow was about to make a movement and so he made one of his own. If Joshua had seen the shortblade he may have thought that it was exquisite, but he could not see it. Instead he felt it, and he knew that it was exquisite from the way that the blade's keen edge cut effortlessly through skin and flesh as his right hand came across to intercept that blade in the short distance and push it outward to stab at the place beneath his arm instead of the target. It was as smooth as sliding a finger across ice, he met no resistance at all until he felt the shortblade's guard press against the side of his hand and wet it with black. "Clever boy." was all he had the time to say. His right arm crackled with the energy that coursed through it but it would do him no good at the moment. There were two options that came to mind, but he only had time to perform one before that light and sharp shortblade that had just pushed past him made another movement. He chose to keep the arcing crimson energy bottled up. With a fast movement turning his arm at the wrist the demon stepped wide onto his right foot and snapped both hands into motion at once; the left discarded his broken blade and instead reached across the other man's weapon, grasping for a fist full of his jacket's sleeve near the wrist; the right instead pulled back sharply, hooking the inside of Maximos' left elbow with the back of his hand. Both hands moved at the same moment, and both applied force to Maximos' arm in opposite directions at either end of the forearm... in an instant Joshua would pull the sword-bearing arm forward and push the elbow back by pressing the back of his right hand into it until it was back far enough for him to roll the elbow joint across his knuckles and press straight up with the heel of his hand-- combined with a fast kick to the inside of the leading left foot with Joshua's own the fast movement should have sent the shadow a**-end-first into the ground by throwing him over his own shoulder. And in a moment, Maximos was moving. Not of his own accord but rather by the machinations of the Demon Prince. Part of him was frustrated. His plan had been thwarted. Joshua's defense was flawless, and Maximos' move was rather telegraphed. It was fast, but it was all performed directly in front of Joshua's face. The other man would have had to had his eyes closes to miss it. Maximos' frustration lie with himself, not his opponent who had performed beautifully.
Sha'yd was knocked aside, and Maximos comforted himself with the slight pleasure that was feelings its blade effortlessly glide through unholy flesh. She was a beauty this shortblade. She was one of the few things Maximos could consider a "treasure". And yet, despite her success failure was failure and now Maximos was being grabbed and tugged rather forcefully.
Inwardly he battled with his options. His sword was useless in such tight spaces. He could attempt to dematerialize his sleeve but it would take too much time. He could simply be tossed but...that sort of effortless defeat was not something he would insult the demon with. Maximos had seen this move before, he had performed this move before. His defense, as he decided, would be no defense at all.
And then a dull ache pulsed across his left shin, fluidly removing from the equation the leg on which Maximos leaned. In response, the Shadow immediately pushed forward off his right leg. He did not resist Razliek's throw, he aided it. His body moved up and forward, the demon twist as required to launch the Shadow over the shoulder. And then just when Maximos' right foot left the ground, at the apex of the throw...he struck.
There was a silver flash, that Joshua would never see, moonlight danced off Sha'yd's glass blade as it spun in Maximos' hand moving into a reverse grip, jutting its foot long blade out past his pinky. Maximos body was moving up, and Razliek's unclothed back came into full view. Back muscles tensed and aiding his throw. Funny, how muscles on the humanoid back almost seem to make a fissure toward the weakest part on the back...the spine. And that was where, mid-toss, Maximos slammed Sha'yd aiming to sever the skeletal juncture with a well placed stab just below the shoulder blades, leaving the blade and his arm's motion completely out of the other Reaper's line of sight.
Now, Maximos knew that on a human a stab like this paralyzed the legs and perhaps the arms. Maximos also knew that Joshua could regenerate. The other Reaper could take the most egregious of wounds and sometimes suffer none of the wounds penalties as he pushed forward. As such he had no idea what effect a stab like this would have, but he meant to make it have a meaningful one. At the moment the blade stabbed, white sparks ran up Maximos' right arm dancing with the lunaic magical symbols burned in that very cursed limb.
Sha'yd was the result of a very long quest across the Angaran continent. She was glass, and steel, and crafted using the draconic leyline science. A science that allowed mundane objects like clothes or rocks to have an actual, touchable, magical flow. Coupled with the fact Sha'yd was being wielded in Maximos' magic-draining arm, the shortblade was granted the gift of being able to steal magical essence from attacks or people it was impaled in. An ability activated at the moment of penetration. Now Maximos had no intention of crippling Joshua if such a thing were even possible. All the Shadow wanted was to cause a hiccup. A glitch in what Razliek expected, perhaps, and hopefully, causing his spine to react for just a moment like a normal mortal spine might in this situation. To balance the equation as it were. Simply put, he hoped it would make the demon's legs immediately fail, not because of magic, but because his spine was cut. The throw would be halted.
If all went according to plan, the Maximos, having gained a bit of control via launching himself into the throw as opposed to simply being carried would immediately drop his weight, onto his right arm and effectively fall on Joshua. Instead of being flipped, Max would instead drive the other man into a ground, his right arm pressed even along Joshua's spine, his legs awkwardly out to the side. And, assuming everything went right he would likely say something like. "Point! That has to be a point!"

(( I've finally realized why backreading our old fights makes no sense at all to me... it's because whenever we misread and misreply to something, instead of making a statement to correct it we just roll forward. Which makes it so confusing to read after-the-fact when MSN conversations can't be immediately brought to mind. To continue that tradition - rolling with your interpretation. )) One cannot ever start a sentence with 'if there was one danger to look out for' when dealing with the shadow, because there is never only one danger... He has many weapons, he has many tools, and his scent for blood is keener than the most vicious predator. If at any time in dealing with the shadow the thought occurs that he is only dangerous in certain ways or under certain conditions it is entirely possible that the person thinking it is already dead and just hasn't realized it yet. Joshua knew that the small blade was a danger but he could not remain focused upon it, because defending only against the shortblade would only leave him defenseless in other areas; to place his hands upon the shadow and move his body instead of restraining the arm that held the blade Joshua was leaving himself open and he knew it - it was a gamble of whether or not he would be able to perform the maneuver faster than Sha'yd would be able to respond to him; a wager that keeping Maximos' own body between himself and the weapon would provide a measure of protection for that brief moment that the movement took to execute. He was wrong-- -- dead wrong. The shadow's quick movement brought the weapon to become a threat much more quickly than the demon had anticipated and with a swift, precise, and dare-to-say even surgical insertion of the blade between flesh and bone, stopping the movement halfway. It was questionable as to whether or not there was any pain involved at all, Sha'yd was the very definition of sharp and the nerves were attacked directly, the wound did not even seem to bleed as the incision was so clean; if he had not seen it coming for that instant before it happened he might not have even noticed the wound until his legs stopped responding to him. It was a clean cut, he could heal it in the blink of an eye as he had done with so many others... but the blade was not removed. No injury could be healed if the weapon that caused it was still there, no matter whether his power was disrupted by it or not. For the moment, the whole thing coming down on his head was unavoidable. The momentum remained but there was nothing to support the weight of one body atop another and both came crashing down with Maximos on top and the other man on the bottom, face-down in the grass and dirt with the shadow practically pressing him into the ground. " Point! That has to be a point!" "Hell." Even from one word passing his lips the demon could taste the blood on his breath and he knew that the wound was deep and high enough to have slit through the sides of his lungs as well. "1-1... Nice sword though, is it new?" By the time the question trailed out he was already gone from beneath Maximos though; sinking down into the earth with barely a disturbance as if it were a pool of water instead, and sliding off the end of the shortblade with just as much resistance... leaving the shadow laying in the grass with a bloodied sword plunged inches into the dirt. Tie game... for now.Activate: Spread the Earth

Maximos Maximos could see he had wounded her. Her body had practically recoiled as if struck, and while he was not crazy about it there was always a rather brutal part of the Shadow that said he simply must do what must be done. Teira, had led a sheltered life and for that he was to blame. She had never been corrected though by Arian tradition it was a great insult to take a name when not given. But Maximos did not want to upset her. Even so many years later when the science and magic of the events had been all hammered out Maximos still looked at Teira and saw the forlorn face of the woman he found on the cusp so long ago. He saw a woman brought to the brink by the malice of the world, and he remembered the silent urging in his heart that said it was a Hero...no, it was a man's job to make that pain go away. He wanted to shield her, to shelter her, even before he really knew her and for no real gratification of his own. It was just the right thing to do. And yet...it wasnt. The more things that were withheld from her, the more shocking realizations that had to come to pass. And yet, he still kept so very much to himself. So very many opinions and feelings on what is and had effectively become her life, were kept to himself. Teira would never know what went on behind that soft smile, even when it did reach his eyes. She could be no shield as he continued to shield and carry her, but he needed and asked for none and nothing but her happiness. And so in the face of all, he comforted himself with the knowledge that he did his best. Maximos had never asked to be a parent. He owed no responsibility to anyone, and so in the face of that, and in light how she had become Maximos could form that soft smile Teira knew so well. The soft smile he wore here, and now. The same soft smile that parted as Maximos now spoke. " Calm yourself little one. They are displeased, they are offended, but they have chosen not to abandon you." His hand reached out to rest softly atop her head. Resting, but not ruffling. " I can teach you the words, and you may say them. The act will having meaning but, they are ultimately only words and are muted against actions. Your time with them will prove your character." He chuckled, a soft and yet sad thing. Whatever had brought the Shadow down, it was not this and it was not resolved. " Thankfully, your kind persist eternally until slain and so you have quite alot of time to work this out." " Now, listen carefully." His hand returned to himself, fingers to his chest and began to speak. After several decades of speaking Arian and only Arian, it was only natural that the tongue flow more smoothly than any of his others. Maximos had since learned many many other languages, and from this experience had trained away most traces of accent, but none were could be his native. Slowly and deliberately Maximos said. " Ego. Sum. Rumas." And then he paused and said it again, stretching out the words to make their phonetics more clearly audible. " Eygo. Soom. Roomahs. I. Am. Sorry." And then his hand glided from his chest toward Teira. " Now you." It was true, what he said had cut and stung just as painfully as any blade drawn across her skin. But not for the reasons Max most likely suspected. While she had been happy to call herself a 'Dark', it wasn't the name that gave her the sense of happiness. It was the feeling of belonging, of being loved. To her it had been a family name, and a sign that she was part of that family. The only understanding of names she had, she had garnered from Gaian customs, not Arian. Here, families shared last names. And so she had assumed-- and there in lay her error. But what's in a name? A rose by any other name would still smell as sweet. And so it was with Teira's happiness. Just because she wasn't Teira 'Dark', it didn't change anything. She was still herself. Max, D and Walter were still her family. They were every bit as precious to her, and they cherished her every bit as much. No, Teira had lost nothing. Nothing had changed, save for a slice of ignorance. There were so, so many things that the shadowling didn't know, and still didn't. It's the natural course of things for one to learn as they live. And one doesn't learn without being taught. Whether they are taught by experience, or by the wisdom of others-- Teira knew she couldn't help what she'd done. But it didn't make her any less ashamed because in her ignorance she had given grievous offense. Not just to the Brothers, but to Maximos as well. An offense she had been committing for well over a year, again and again. And he had never corrected her. You cannot fix, that which you do not know needs fixing. But now-- now she knew. And she would make it right! "Calm yourself little one. They are displeased, they are offended, but they have chosen not to abandon you." His hand reached out to rest softly atop her head. Resting, but not ruffling. "I can teach you the words, and you may say them. The act will having meaning but, they are ultimately only words and are muted against actions. Your time with them will prove your character."His hand was a comforting and familiar weight. Her cheeks flushed softly as she bit her lip and nodded. Then standing up straighter, the soft glow of crimson, pooling in ebony depths met his eyes as she looked up at him from beneath his palm. That wounded tentativeness left her features as her face beamed with conviction and she nodded again with a decisive firmness.
"Mmm!""Now, listen carefully."And so she did. Her eyes fell shut as she put everything else from her mind and focused only on his voice and the oh so important words ushered to her ears by his lips. "Ego. Sum. Rumas." And then he paused and said it again, stretching out the words to make their phonetics more clearly audible. "Eygo. Soom. Roomahs. I. Am. Sorry."She let each word wash over her, her keen ears picking out the subtle inflections and nuances of each vowel and consonant. Despite her adept hearing however, she still had to correct herself as she attempted to repeat the phrase back to Maximos.
"Eygo suh-- soom. Eygo soom roomahs. Ego sum rumas." Looking to Max for approval of her pronunciation, she would tweak it where needed, repeating it both to herself and to him until she had it right. Despite having an ear for languages, she couldn't help but feel that her tongue was clumsy when it cam to the graceful dance of Arian speech. Still, she was determined.
"Thank you, Nii-chan."
Taking a breath she looked as if she were braced to address the brothers, but instead she stepped into Maximos and raising her free hand to his face, she leaned up and cupped his cheek gently. There was tender fierceness in her eyes as she very gently, yet clearly spoke her newly learned words again. Not for approval, but for forgiveness.
"Ego sum rumas, Nii-chan."
Maximos might realize, why she had recoiled. Not because he had hurt her, but because she in her ignorance, had given offense to the person she loved most and the realization disgusted her.
She smiled at him and pressed a kiss to his cheek. She wished he had told her sooner, but she knew he hadn't out of kindness and caring. She had to wonder, what else he overlooked for the sake of her smile. But she didn't say it aloud, not just now. She did however, note to herself that she had a very important request to make of Walter before she left.
Drawing back, she was still smiling, though there was a subtle seriousness to her eyes. She glanced down at the swords in her arm and then back to Maximos.
"I'll be right back." she promised, excusing herself and leaving the room. She walked a little ways down the hallway, each step focused as she willed herself not to wobble on her tired and unsteady legs. Stopping, she leaned the swords against the wall and knelt in front of them, so that her eyes were even with the hilts.
"I, Teiraesia Kos, have forgiveness to ask of you, Brother's Harite."
She had left the room because the apology she wished to speak, belonged between only them. Maximos' presence gave her comfort and courage, and that was precisely why she could not speak it with him present. Not for this. No. She would do this on her own. It was the first step, in correcting the error she had made.

"It is! I received it in Angara, traveling with Mr. Kazamaru. You remember Ryugi right?" But Joshua was already gone. Of course he was. That was the nature of the beast. Razliek was chaos given purpose. Like a force of nature, he was unpredictable, turning even the expected into the unexpected and back into exactly what you always knew was going to happen...what he had likely told you would happen, but which you now found yourself powerless to stop. The only constant in the demon prince was that no matter the form, function, or strategy his purpose was achieved. The furthest extent possible. And with nothing short of excellence. Maximos was already on his feel. He answered his own sentence with an affirming, sobering word. " Right." Maximos, quite literally, had no idea what to expect. His eyes scanned the ground, back and forth, quickly but evenly. Joshua had never presented earth elemental powers before. This had to be something else. And yet there was no chance it was an illusion, that was to far out of the demon's style and impossible to slip past the Shadow's right eye. Maximos was clueless in a way no one else had managed to make him, and he absolutely loved every suspenseful second of it. If Joshua could sink below, Maximos could rise above. A small burst of essence moved to his boots making the lunaic stitching set in the leather glow a faint purple. It was not enough to fly, but it was enough to leap if need be. He brought up Sha'yd defensively, close to his chest and held his longsword out to his left side, ready to strike. And then, with an amused smirk on his face he said. " Come out...come out...wherever you are..." -|- Teira's pain was something that unsettled him of course, but it was a necessary thing if she was to attain what he saw dawning over her now. Understanding. Understanding was knowledge was experience was growth. Growth was always worth the pain. Even if a part of him hurt that it was his mistake that caused her this pain. It worked out if she understood. This understanding was a double edged sword however. She would know why he did what he did, and she would know just as well why he was doing, what he was doing. That if he kept things from her, then he was keeping things from her. And with that came the Shadow's apprehension that she might ask. But to his pleasant surprise she never did. He continued his lesson, his mismatched eyes on hers as she sounded out each word. He made no motion to correct her mistake, she had caught it before he could. And when she finished the small phrase he nodded his head and said. " Well done." Its not that Arian was a supernaturally difficult language. Maximos just never spoke it, and had no accent and so it left the words alien to the tongue. But Teira had graced them well enough. " "Thank you, Nii-chan." " She said, and Maximos politely nodded. Such was the way with children, falling, rising, and eventually walking on their own, and away. She seemed ready to perform her formal apology when suddenly instead she stepped toward him. Maximos' eyebrow cocked. Almost in response her hand found the side of his face. There was something new in her eyes, something he could only see now in the dim light and that made him smile, albeit a tired sort of thing. Teira had not committed a wrong and crumpled into it and down to the ground. She had done wrong, and was making steps to fix it. He saw the fire in her eyes, a blaze set to fuel the woman to...something, somewhere. In that same moment he realized how very little he had come to know of her heart's desires since she vanished. But such was not the cause of the wear on his face or the reason his smile did not stretch all the way to his eyes. And then... "Ego sum rumas, Nii-chan." He had never stated an insult to himself. He had never listed himself as deserving of an apology even if that was what custom demanded. Maximos was never the sort to place such value in a name, and yet there it was. Teira had stepped beyond what was expected her, she moved an extra step, and in doing so showed the truth of the apology in her heart. He laughed very lightly, and as any big brother might he ruffled her hair and finally met her eyes. His eyes belying his smile, adding the weight to his words as he said. " Totas venia et, noctfilia." And provided no translation. And then she was off. He smiled softly as she stepped away. She did not explain, and neither did she need to. It was funny though, as she turned the corner and shuffled off down the hall, he could not help but see the scared and curious little girl shuffling to his side as she was lead down a similar hall to the dining room for the first time. Max turned away and began slicing at the shadows once more. -|- In the Hall, there was silence. While it was likely understood that if the Brother's could place their voices in her head they could speak any time, and likely read her mind...they were completely silent. There was a spark in magical weapons like these, they felt alive in your hand. When one grasped their hilts it felt as if they might leap out of from their finger-prison and fight on their own. When they were swung, they swung with the wielder. They added a sense of unseen and ineffable partnership. But for Teira, they deliberately felt like very fancy, very large, kitchen knives. As personal as anything you might find in a department store. As alive as that same cold, food grade steel. In view of what they were meant to be, and how they felt during their reveal, they felt especially cold. It was like placing your hand in the flame, and feeling it freeze you instead. They were just swords, the Brother's had meant their words, she would earn everything. They were set down, and their hilt-borne eyes were cold and dull but at their name sparked into golden life. There was no light in Shadow Island and so to say an area became dark was non-sensical. One could say that the darkness moved in the same way shapes move beneath the ocean waves, it crawled against the wall and then the brother and black pulled himself through that aberation. Lengths of black clinging to his form before he stepped down and beside himself. While there was no light, in certain area's such as entrances hall lamps were placed to signify a doorway. They were made of an imperial blue shadow flame, casting no light so much as moving darkness away so as to allow vision. It was one of these lights nearest Teira that ignited furiously. Its flames scorched a path up the wall as it moved from simple candle light to an towering inferno. The core of the fire was red and orange as normal flame should be, and then just as suddenly and furiously it exploded in a flash of blue, and purple, and red and orange. And as the ash settled, there stood the brother in red. Like his kin in black he stood beside himself. Even though their hands and arms were undefined and dark, they stood with their arms crossed. It was visible by the way their hooded cloaks moved around them and down their shoulders. They said nothing. But they were listening.
