Kimiko rolled her head from side to side. This one...she felt strange still, picturing that field of endless graves in her mind. Kimiko wasn't really a fan of graveyards to the begin with, just picturing the grave yard described in the book was a little shaking. What could have happened there indeed?

There was no way you could convince her that standing up to evil selfish people was a bad thing. They maybe took it to far by killing the king, but still, she would always stand up to people who were abusing their power and taking advantage of the weak. That was just her style. She ran a hand through her hair looking back to the sky. "Hmm, maybe it was the kings family though...maybe they wanted revenge so they came back with some kind of army..." she turned that over. "I wonder..."

Kimiko read on, forgetting entirely that she was actually training.

Kino looked at the man quizzically "What do you mean? What happened next?"

The man continued his tale. "The People began to vote, and for a time things were peaceful enough, but soon there began discrepancies among the populace." He looked about at the broken ruins "People complained about the time it took, they complained about the rulings, and how the Minority was always left in the shadows. There began whispers of revolution amidst the the people, and the Majority voted the all be executed, dealt with as they'd dealt with the king, hung from the highest tower. As time went on everyone how disagreed with the Majority was hung from that tower, there began deaths over the mediocre of decisions, people who disapproved of the death penalty arose and they two were silenced... Over the course of 20 years this continued, until only three people were left. A man, another man and his wife. The man voted to leave the destroyed nation... and the man and his wife said neigh... the man's wife died three days later from a sickness... they man they'd executed had been the doctor..." again he looked back to the earthen mound. "That man is laid there... at the feet of the tower he swore on..."

Kimiko was looking...strangely confused. It was strange only because she couldn't fully place why she was confused. She pulled her lighter from the pouch at her thigh, the book resting beside her. She didn't smoke (Of Course) but this light meant far more to her than that. She didn't keep it for it's intended purpose, lighting things on fire wasn't really her thing, but she liked to watch fire, enjoyed the simple act of beholding it. It was perhaps this that caused her father to buy her this same engraved lighter for her last birthday.

She frowned, her eyes dazzled by the dancing flame. "They didn't really do anything wrong until they forgot the very reason they were fighting... or...maybe they just took it to far..." she clamped the lid down on her lighter. "Hmm, I guess maybe...a little of both...?"

A sweet smelling breeze rolled through the training grounds it smelled of flower petals and incense and animal musk...sadly...When the breeze rolled away a masked ANBU stood there the kitsine masks smile shrouded in a black face mask. The obvious sign that this ANBU was of the Anzan clan. The smiling kitsune was also partway blindfolded bt a tightly bound shinobi headband. The sound village insignia glimmering happily as the sunlight hit its glorious visage."Hrm....mother said Shikaree was around here somewhere...." The masked ANBU said"...but where....."The ANBU said once again He walked from his position ironically towards the position where shikaree and Shif where. He unknowingly was walking in their direction.

Elsewhere in the field. Shifs ears perked up...someone was walking towards then. The step seemed familiar...an ANBU it seemed...."meh..what does this ANBU want..." he thought as he stood and from this position he could see the wierd looking kitsune mask."Another Anzan huh.......must be this kids cousin...or maybe his brother."Shif thought as he waved towards the oncoming figure"HELLO! What brings an ANBU like yourself so far from the Anzan family home." Shif asked jokingly but the ANBU walked to his side then looked akwardly at Shif."Im here for my brother...Otherwise i wouldnt even be outside of the compound....by the way...we should go by the kages office sometime today...i heard we have a new one coming into office today." He said as he noticed the little boy slumbering peacefully."Pfft...same old shikaree...sleeping after hardly ever working." He thought as he slung the boy over his shoulder with little effort."Hey ANBU...My names Shisui Anzan..dont forget it."He said turning to look at Shif."My names Shif Kenkomishi...and i wont." The two ANBU stared at each other for a second before Shisui place his mask over his face and disapeared With Shikaree as a breeze rolled through the fields."Damnit...he stole my thing..." Shif thought as he placed his kitsune mask over his face and did as the previous had done. The two breezes went in opposite directions. One whistling towards the housing district. The other..towards the kages office.
(Shisui + Shikaree exit to housing district)
(Shif exit to kages office)

Kimiko's eyes widened to their brink as she continued to read, ignoring completely a strange blast of wind going across the training grounds. She blinked still staring at the book.

"Did...you kill him?" Kino asked dispassionately.

The man answered just as dispassionately "No...he died after telling me his story...if I had to guess it was malnourishment."

His cloak billowed in a breeze of death, the dust of the destroyed country brushed against them both. "It's strange..." Kino raised an eyebrow "I came here wanting to see what had become of this land...if my father's death was worth this new regime..." his eyes seemed dim "But now a republic for the people has killed it's own people...and now I am prince of a land of graves..."

Kimiko was now staring at the words, her eyes reading with her mouth ajar. 'So this man is the son of the king that was killed!? Oh wow!'

Kino seemed to realize what the man was saying as well. She looked up to the bloody tower looming above them, and stared at it for time, contemplating the meaning of freedom, life, and ones view of their fellow man. She looked ahead to the road out of the fallen land...and started to get back on Hermes, preparing to move on...

"Tell me traveler..." The man in the cloak was still looking at the same tower she had been. "What do you believe...the lesson is here? Is it that sheep need a Shepard...or that even the best of intentions can give birth to greatest of evils?"

Kino looked back "Neither, Freedom is a selfish thing to seek, any cost that you pay in pursuit of it must be acknowledged as an act of selfishness...but...if you accept that, if you can live with that, and still give for others who seek freedom with you..."

The man stood for a moment. "Heh..." he was smirking "So it's your opinion what happened here was... because people couldn't let go of there own selfish desires? Because in the end they suffered the same failing as their king..." he laughed again "I see...your right... the lesson here is that a nation is only as good as the people in power...whether it be ruled by one or ten thousand... Thank you traveler..."

Kino revved up Hermes and began down the road... looking back once, she wondered what would become of the prince of a land of graves...

Kimiko turned her eyes up from the book as the chapter ended... she looked upon the setting sun with surprise. It was getting late...she should head home... She got up and dusted her legs off, gathering the other books along with her new mysterious one... she definitely finish reading this...what a...thought provoking book. As Kimiko walked home the ideas planted in her head by the book still swam about, and out of character for her, seemed almost...pensive.

(With Xenon after his mastery of the technique... I'm waiting for Kimiko's to be graded before I continue with her.)

Xen sighed rolling his shoulder in it's socket, his eyes dull. He was definitely feeling accomplished after his days of mastering the jutsu, even perhaps a little...more enlightened. Still, now more than ever he couldn't just take a break. There still one final Academy jutsu he'd yet to master, and the sooner he did the sooner he could move on to other things. He unrolled the scroll he'd brought with him from the library, like before they'd had plenty in stock, but this time he'd decided to bring it with him, after all, he didn't have another reason to stay in the library this time, and this jutsu wasn't bound to be as complicated as his last.

His eyes poured over the scroll for Substitution.

Kawamiri no Jutsu
To learn this technique, I took the students out to the forest and made bundles of wood for them to use to practice. I made two different exercises for this Jutsu, because of inactivity. First, would be the solo training.
The student would pretend that his opponent was coming at him with a strength of 3.
Formula: 3 + 10 = DC: 13
Kawamiri Formula = 1d20 + Kawamiri
Train: 4/4
Experience: +10
Points: +1 Kawamiri
Second, would be the students who were practicing in pairs. One student would attack using the formula: 1d10 + Str.
Then the defensive student would use their opponents total + 10 to create their DC. They would then use the formula 1d20 + Kawamiri.
Train: 4/4
Experience: +10
Points: +1 Kawmiri

Xenon finished stacking the wood pile, his lab coat sitting folded beside the pile. He folding his glasses as well, setting them upon the coat. He walked exactly 20 paces away, and closed his eyes. He allowed his muscles to relax, let the tension flow out of him... then pictured his opponent coming at him, this nameless faceless foe was charging, kunai in hand...

Xenon stopped, his mental picture faltering. No, no that wouldn't do, he seemed passive for a moment before he seemed content about something. His chakra flow had been all wrong just then...but now...he rest himself, standing lax once more. He wasn't really in a hurry, he had left the entire day open to learn this jutsu.

The affectacious ninja sprung at Xen, Xenon's own hands springing into action. With the precision he'd honed in mastering the other jutsu he'd so far learned, his fingers sped through the hand signs. His imaginary opponent never stood a chance, in a explosion of smoke Xenon was now sitting atop the log pile, the log he'd utilized falling to earth 20 paces away. He stood pleased with this first success, but then he knew he still had some kinks to work out, the principle for this jutsu wasn't really difficult, but doing so accurately and under duress were key elements to be taken into consideration.

Substitution, more than even bushin, often had to be activated at a moments notice. He walked 20 paces in another direction, and decided this time he'd narrow the time he had before his attacker struck...

(Two days before)
Kimiko had come to the training ground yet again, odd considering all she needed to do was read, but then again in her own little mind set this was "serious" training, and therefore it was inappropriate for it to happen any where else.

She settled down against the same tree she had the day before, this time however, she only brought one book with her, the strange worn tome labeled "Kino's Journey". She opened the book almost immediately, reading as Kino began here long trek across a seemingly endless desert called "The Reality Desert." Kino and Hermes stopped to make camp, when a stranger emerged from the wastes. Kino welcomed the stranger and offered him some of her water. In payment for this kindness, he gave her what he described as his most treasured possession... a book. Without another word the man left...

The imagined opponent leapt from the tree's, his feet sweeping him across the grass like the wind. He drew his kunai, his eyes bulging in victory as it ran Xen through...then widened in terror as Xen vanished in a puff of smoke... and a log was all that remained. The imaginary opponent faded as well as Xenon was nodding to himself rising from a seat atop the pile of logs. Yes, he'd done that quite well, but he still wasn't completely satisfied, but then he rarely was this quickly. He would keep raising the stakes... he nodded to himself... an ambush scenario perhaps... He started to plan it out in his head as he walked back to twenty paces.

Kimiko was actually twirling a lock of her hair around her finger as she read.

Kino and Hermes, the book packed away with Kino's possessions, moved across the desert, running into various trials and tribulations. Still, Despite all these troubles. The pair made it to the middle of the desert, their lives intact. Yet here, now looming high above them, marking the very center, was a city of incredible size. Th city opened it's gates to her, closing them swiftly behind, and welcomed her with open arms. Here, she was assured, was the greatest library in the world. Kino looked around this place with wonder...everyone here seemed pleasant enough, and their dreams were all very grandiose and prolific, but everyone seemed...trapped. It struck her notice that everyone here was reading a book, there minds trapped within. They most of the time seemed entirely unaware of the harsh desert beyond their walls. In response to being asked the mayor of the town, after putting down his book, explained.

"What sort of world is that out there? Naught but cruelty and blistering winds. We stay here within the shelter of our walls, the Oasis of fantasy giving us what we need in water, allowing us to grow our own crops even amidst this devilish waste." he waved his hand "You'll stay here with us if you have any sense." But while Kino spent three days in this unique place, she and Hermes set out again, heading across the rest of the desert.

Xen fumbled slightly a log on his lap. He frowned haphazardly. He'd substituted with the wrong log, he'd been aiming for the one now on his lap, the one at the top of the pile. That wouldn't do at all. He got out from under the log, replacing both it and the one he'd ended up being replaced with, While his reality challenged foe magically returned to the spot from which he would ambush him. After things were reset Xen returned to his own starting point, shaking his hands to loosen his muscles again. He had to be relaxed, unsuspecting, then snap into the jutsu, it had to be a reflex, or it may end up being the thing that "Could Have" saved his life.

Kimiko actually opened the lunch box her mom had forced her to bring and started to munch on the cookie contained inside throwing aside the sticky note saying "For Desert." As she absently devoured the pastry she continued to pour over the book.

Kino faced many more dangers across the Desert, and at times she didn't think she'd make it, but in the end, she reached a fabulous sight. There was a vast and wondrous jungle on the other side, filled with fresh fruit, running water, and miraculous creatures. Kino had stopped to rest amidst this marvelous place, when strangely enough she met the same man she'd ran into in the desert. Though she'd met him passing her on the other side, they'd both ended up her.

Kino told the man of the city she'd found in the center, and the man nodded, explaining it was his home. He also explained to her the error of his peoples ways. How they never would reach this place, never reach this end of the harsh desert, and never taste the fruits of this paradise.

Xen jumped off the top of the pile, his opponent once more fading with a completely surprised look on his face. He certainly seemed like he was skilled at the substitution...but to be able to use it in practice against a real opponent...it would be different story...he might try it one more time, but after that...he needed to find a real opponent... practicing by himself wasn't enough... He needed a genie pig...er...sparring partner. Yes...sparring partner. He chuckled to himself as he began to plot new scenario...

Xenon pulled his coat off the ground, his finger running though his hair as he pondered his situation. As he suspected he couldn't learn anything more from image trained fights...or, rather, it wasn't going to be a sufficient test of his skills. He'd need to find someone who would be willing to attack him recklessly while he practiced his substitutions... His golden eyes glistened slightly as they hovered above a mouth slowly forming a half smile " Ah...of course...she'll be perfect..." He started off in search of the person he had in mind. There was hardly a day when she wasn't at the training grounds...surely he could find her around her somewhere...

(Put on hold once again until Kimiko catches up...)

Kimiko, now drawing toward the end of the chapter, stopped to muse. She certainly had liked this chapter, it had been an exciting journey across the desert, but she couldn't help but feel the underlying point in all of it... couldn't help but get the message it was trying to put across. The whole thing seemed to revolve around...whether people let their love for the fantasy world completely envelope their love for the real world. Kimi nodded "Yeah... I mean..." She looked at the book with a strange sort of admiration. 'Even though the world of fantasy is wonderful, if you let yourself get caught up in what isn't real, you'll never be able to enjoy the pleasures of the stuff you really can touch...'

The dark haired young woman felt the necklace she wearing. 'Yeah...truth, love, justice, they exist in this world too...you just have to go looking for them.'

This though, made her stop and think. There was another side to the coin to though... those souls the book had mentioned, lost souls swept away by the desert... it had seemed to Kino liked they'd just stopped trying to move forward... those people.

Was it referring to the people who were lost to far in the harsh side of reality? Those people who given up on the good things this world had to offer... she thought, now she considered it, that she'd much rather be one of those trapped by the call of the books in the city, than those worn away in the desert...

She frowned slightly seeming at an impasse. Neither way was really right... but...she could understand those people who were bound to the books. She knew that wasn't her way...but..was she right to criticize them..?

Then Kimiko, though she didn't entirely realize why, thought of her nemesis, Maboroshi. Something he'd said to her a long time ago came back to her.

Kimiko had been late for class that day, and the teacher as punishment, had forced her to stand at the back of the classroom carrying two buckets of water... Thinking of how much this reminded her of the beginning of one of her favorite stories, her thoughts had been interrupted by the word's of her already long time enemy.

"Late again..." He said to her discretely, his usual mellow facade in play. "You know Momoe-san, perhaps you should invest in an alarm clock."

She looked away stubbornly "Hey, don't talk to me! Your supposed to ignore me while I'm being punished."

But the slver haired youth seemed unphased "Don't worry, the teacher left for a while, or didn't you notice?"

She frowned "Doesn't matter! It's a matter of honor!"

She'd never seen that look till she met him... but she was used to it now. That 'You've got some nerve talking about such nonsense.' look. "Idiot."
