Oh uhm... it seems that religion was nothing but form of control among men. I don't know very much about God, myself, but I can't see any of God's actual influence in what has been reported in these books.

That's a very succinct way of putting it. Typically, it seems that people are willing to put their faith in anything so long as it helps them feel better about themselves, no matter how foolish.
