Typhoon_Omi The White Mage.
The White Mage would merely cast Shell, Wall, what have you - then curse him or herself as the match progresses. Finally, when both mages are out of MP and would have to resort to physically attacking one another - White Mages [FF1 and on] always have a fairly nice melee alternative, such as the Hammer, yadda. Black Mages don't. White Mages can have some decent HP. Black Mages never do.
Advantage = White Mage.
The Red Mage, not being as good in magic as either, would have a nice advantage of having both schools of magic- but would have to balance attack and supportive, which could make said Red Mage not focus on one long enough - and die anyway.
Time Mage and Blue Mage.. totally depends on their skills, but they could kick utter a**. Black Mage could get dagger, but yes, hammers are more powerful. Still.. Aspir... That's Drain for MP that Black Mages get (or should, started since FFV or even earlier). So they take the White Mage's MP and regain that much for themselves. In theory they could bleed the White Mage dry but keep their MP full.
Oh, and they can get Scythes in XI... but I have a feeling mentioning XI too much will get me nasty stares.
Blue Mage rocks. Hands-down "Owner of All." Time Mage... it depends on what version. Sometimes they get Regen (for some healing), of course Slow/Stop/Haste for speed disparity, Reflect (instead of White), and Meteor/Comet, generally a very powerful spell like Holy. They could come out pretty well, too.

Well put, Monseiru. However, if it were a RTS game, the actual duration of the cast wouldn't matter that much. Plus, BM's have some rather lengthy spells of their own. =P I remember one game's Meteorite that had a five piece cinema every cast.
Course, it entirely depends on which game we're talking about. FFT WM/BM = totally different from Grandia's versions of WM/BM, or from FF1's WM/BM, etc..etc..

Well, going to comical standings, anyone who's seen 8-Bit Theatre knows that the s**t that the black mage pulled to nuke and remove a forest of the face of the ******** planet should note that Black mages pwn.
No, really, I'd like to see white mages stand up to something like that.

[Ahem.] I've a friend whom's so addicted to that, I rarely see him anymore. XD I hear Blue Mage is kind of over-powered in it, though. ALTHOUGH, I do love the class in general in just about any game - it's just a good concept. Especially FFIII & FFIX's BM. Time, I really like the concept - but it depends on what game. Some games cast them in pure supportive, some give them some pretty nice Demi/Time Offensive magic.
And I thought we were talking about BM/WM's in general. Excuuuuuse me, plz. [Hurls a Gundam at Binatica. Because it's a GUNDAM.]

Hey, hey, HEY! Don't waste a perfectly good Gundam.
And, screw it, if we're diving into the 8-bit Theater realm here, Thief wins.

she only created existance because the other guy who was supposed to do it showed up late or something. can't count that; it wasn't her own power.
but i'm with binatica... we'd have to say what game we're working with. not series, but specific game... because you can learn different magic in different games.
so... i suppose the answer to who'd win... is the person with the fire shield and merton learned.

Advantage = White Mage in that.I was using that as an example, don't rain on my goddamn parade. gonk Give a black mage that massive nuke attack. Now pit him against a white mage. Just watch the white mage try and avoid a nuke-like explosion.
