Artemis looked at the pack in horror. His mind flashed back to when he smoked on the way back to the house. he grabbed the pack again and stuffed it in the deepest pocket. "But...how is this possible? I'm the only known one who has cigarettes. And where is the closest lake or something like that?"

Je suis a toi “I don’t think a doctor is going to be of much help right now, Lily.” Ilandere said quickly, “Right now, we don’t need a doctor, we need you. This is your territory, you know the left and right of things. If you can find out what’s wrong with him, maybe then I can help. You had better hurry though, he doesn’t look like he can hold on for much longer.”
Hearing Devon’s question, Ilandere put up a hand to quiet him.
“Right now we don’t have time for explanations. If I knew myself what happened, then I would tell you.”
Ilandere went to the cupboards and drawers searching for any kind of first-aid.
“Mind helping, anyone?!” She shouted to the others frustratedly. They couldn’t afford to loose someone else. Ilandere didn’t think she could take it.
Charade looked at everyone around her. No one seemed to be doing much to help the dieing lad. She rolled her eyes. Charade got up and started digging through everything. Finally after a few minutes, and making a total mess of the place, she found bandages and medicine. "Here, Ilandere," she said, holding out the supplies. "I don't know how to use any of this stuff. But, I can try and help."

Ilandere took the things from Charade gratefully though, from what she heard from Lily, she was unsure if they would be of any help. Walking past Lily and Artemis quickly, she went to Jake’s side, checking his pulse and feeling his faint heartbeat once more. She frowned and looked to Lily.
“Lily, quickly, tell me what to do. He’s going into respiratory arrest.” Ilandere said, her voice rising in urgency and volume, “Lily, if we don’t help him soon he’s going to die. There has to be something we can do for him . . . isn’t there? Isn’t there?!”

"I don't know, I don't know, I don't know!" Lily told everyone. She sat down on the bed and looked at Jake. His eyes opened slightly. "Lily?" he asked weakly. "I'm righ there Jake. What... what is it?" His breathing was weak, and his voice was barely audible. "Saint Dane... he's here. Sabotoged... computers. Worldwide. I was there. He couldn't let me... tell others... I know how..." he closed his eyes again, and he took a deep breath, but the rest of the words wouldn't come out. "Know how what!?" Lily almost screamed at him. instead it came out as a frantic whisper. "What, Jake?"

Artemis sat down in a daze. He looked around slowly. He noticed that Ilandere and Charade trying to revive Jake, Lily horrified hy their side and everyone else stunned. Artemis has seen what Jake is doing before. The last breath, and then...death. "Uh, guys. I don't think it matters anymore. Unless Third Earth has something to stall death, Jake is a goner."

Ilandere scowled at Artemis. It doesn’t matter if someone is dying or has only a few seconds left to live; you never just say they’re dead. It’s disrespectful and uncaring . . . especially to Lily.
Ilandere sat on the ground with her back against the bed and buried her face in her hands. Things were steadily disintegrating for the travelers . . . Saint Dane was getting his way . . .

"Dont' you dare look at me like that Ilandere. He may have a few seconds left, but if by some miracle he gets up, he is dead. Unlike you, I am not optimistic, but I look and see the facts. Fact: Jake is as good as dead. Deal with it." Artemis gave Ilandere his darkest scowl, glaring at her as if daring her to contradict him. "I'm sorry for the callousness Lily. I just don't deal with hope, faux or not."

Ilandere stood angrily and walked to the door, hitting Artemis upside the head on her way out of the room. Optimistic? She was being optimistic was she? No, it was not hope, optimism, it was not the shred of faith that pulls most people through, it was common decency and respect. If she were ridiculed for caring then she must truly not be needed, for the only thing she could offer, the only thing she could do for these people at this time, was offer kindness and concern. No . . . she did not need to be scorned for trying to help.
Walking in a steadfast manner, Ilandere went to the front door and opened it. The rain was pouring from the sky heavily now, reflecting her mood. Without looking back, she slammed the door shut behind her, shaking the very walls of the building, and walked out into the street. Her shoulder stung and ached with the cold rain but she did not care.
Ilandere walked alone in the rain, down the center of the slick street. Let their very last sight of me be my back for this is the sight of abandonment . . . the feeling of rejection . . .

Artemis didn't flicnh when Ilandere hit him on the head. "Excuse me for a minute. Or a few." He got up and followed Ilandere out into the rain. His spiked hair fell over his eyes and he irritatingly pushed it out. He noticed the faint outline of Ilandere hurrying along. "Ilandere!" he shouted. But under the pouring she barely heard him. He hurried up to catch her, to tell her why he was disillusioned about hope.

Devon looked between the ones that were looking at of after Jake, and the two who just left. He was stunned. He thought that the writer would have understood death, yet he was as callous and insensitive as the worst person he knew. "I'm going to follow them...if, you know...anyone cares." Devon shrugged and stood up. He left the door and was hit with the rain. Oddly enough his hair still stood on end. He followed Artemis and Ilandere, and then heard Artemis shout out.

Wondering what just happened to everybody. Ilandere had just ran out of the room followed by Artemis, and then being chased by Devon.
"But What about Jake? We just can't leave him here!!" Christopher asked with a hint of annoyance in his voice.

Ilandere heard the slaps of wet footsteps behind her and a faint shout through the rain. She turned to see Artemis coming after her and Devon not too far behind. Pointing a warning finger at Artemis she scowled.
“Forget it!” She shouted to him, “Not a word!”
Ilandere turned back around and kept walking, her light-blonde hair dripping with water, green eyes darting about the barren – rain slick streets cautiously.

Eadoin stepped up to Christopher warily and looked at the boy lying in need.
“I’ll do all I can.” he said shyly, “Though I don’t think it will be much. It seems as if Jake’s time is coming.”
He made the last comment quietly, more out of fear of another argument like the last that had just occurred than anything.
