Coyote perused the menu with little interest before deciding on the filet mingon, rare. You couldn't over-cook meat of any type without offending his genteel tastes. He flicked strands of dark hair from his face and looked over at Kio with a bored expression. "How old are you?"

"Sixteen," he replied, his face impassive. He knew he looked young - if his pride had ever allowed him to, he could have passed for a twelve-year-old with minimal difficulty. He continued to scan the menu, at last settling on some sort of salmon-salad dish that sounded good.

"Hmm." Coyote shrugged and leaned back in the booth, loving the plush cushions and looking up at the skylight. The illusion of being outdoors, peering up at the night while still being cooled by the air conditioning had been startling at first but now he found he rather enjoyed it. Comfort while viewing all the things he'd ever known. "Where are you from?"

"The city," he said unhelpfully. "I think my parents originally came from the country, but I've lived in one city or another all my life," he said, shrugging. It didn't matter - all cities were the same to him. The waiter came and he made his order, also ordering some lemonade - something he had learned to like after a while. He knew restaurants like this would probably frown upon a non-child ordering something like lemonade, but didn't care.

Mie-tanuki Liao swallowed slightly uncomfortably before retorting, "It - it doesn't have anything to do with you. You... you wouldn't understand." He looked a little angry, but that was just a cover for the cold fear that gripped him any time he had to talk about... those things. His hand had gone up instinctively to his throat again, but he turned the movement into tucking his hair behind one ear. He didn't want to be too obvious, if he could help it. Vi inched away from the snake, brown eyes settling on his brother for a moment before he thanked Wei for allowing him to visit at such a late time. Although the lights were indeed still out with Chang alongside him the rabbit figured they would make it safel back to his apartment.
"Chang, we're leaving," he announced in a soft voice, walking over towards his brother, resting a hand on the cat's shoulder. In an instant the older teen was gone and instead a dark cat took his place, curled up against the kitten.
Wei scowled, "Hell no, you're not getting your damn fur all over my couch. Be a good pet and go," he muttered in a clearly agitated voice. Vi eventually had to pick the cat up for his unwillingness to cooperate, thanking Wei once more with that gentle look about him as he exited with his feline brother hugged against his chest.
Wei followed the two outside for a moment, murmuring something in a low tone towards the rabbit while petting the dark cat on his head before returning inside with a smirk. "Still scared?" He asked while locking the door.

Liao watched the others leave silence. He had nothing to say to them and he was suddenly feeling... not quite so happy as before - and he had been not at all happy. The memories the other cat had made him think of... they were painful. He frowned and looked away from Wei and down at his own hands, nodding slowly before murmuring again, "You wouldn't understand..."

Coyote sighed, anthro or not this boy just wasn't interesting. At all. There were some people that were interesting sometimes but this fellow didn't even show a spark of a hint of a possibility of being at all exciting. He loathed dull things.
His attention was momentarilly pulled from the boy's monotony as a group of uniformed officers stepped into the restaurant, looking about and asking questions about a stolen red sports car that had been found in the parking lot. He chuckled inwardly and waited for his meal to arrive as he sipped at his wine.
I'm from the desert, Native American in my blood, if you couldn't tell from the complete stereotype look I inherited from somewhere in my family. No clue why I can do what I can, have just always been able to change and never questioned it. What about you?"

"My whole family is like me," he murmured back, his voice low. He was cautious when it came to talking about his... condition. You never knew who might be listening. He watched the men out of the corners of his eyes - he was always on guard and wary of anyone that might be around so he could be ready to run if there came that time. "Father is like me, but Mother is arctic. So we're mixed." He didn't bother himself trying to get the other's interest with anything. If he seemed dull, so be it; it just meant less trouble for Kio to deal with later.

He frowned and looked away from Wei and down at his own hands, nodding slowly before murmuring again, "You wouldn't understand..." "How can you make such an assumption?" Wei asked, testing the door handle before carefully making his way back into candle light. Sitting down at the furthest edge of the couch, the snake grinned as he curled up his now bootless feet under him. "And even if I can't relate directly it's better than keeping your fears inside, eh?" He suggested, his smile flickering into something more like a smirk as he leaned forward to turn the kitten's eyes towards his own.

"I... I..." Liao didn't know what to say to that. How could he tell anyone - let alone Wei, whom he hardly knew - what made him afraid? He knew if he spoke it out loud... the other would laugh... or... or make fun of him... After all, it is always more real to those who experience it. "I... can't tell you," he murmured, looking away. "You... you laugh or... I don't know, but you wouldn't take me seriously." He sighed slightly. "Because I... I'm just... just a kid," he said, looking a little resentful.

Wei frowned as the boy turned his gaze away once more. Shifting forward a few inches, the snake pressed one finger against Liao's chin, turning his face once more towards his own. "First things first, I would greatly appreciate it if you would look at me," he murmured in a more than stern voice.
"Do I look like the burst-out-laughing type?" He asked, cocking his head to the side as he let his hand slip back against his side.

Grey eyes were forced to look into green orbs as Liao's chin was pulled so that he faced the other. Once the other had released his face, he shook his head slowly. "No... you don't..." he murmured quietly. "I... it's just that... I was... whenever it was raining... I was always... alone.... I have very bad memories of when it rains..." His eyes were down cast, fixed on the floor, but at least he wasn't looking directly away, though. "Bad things always happened when it rained..."

Tugging at one sock, pulling it further to keep it from falling off, Wei looked up with a slight frown. "If you don't mind me asking, what sort of bad things happened?" He asked, looking lightly confused. How could many bad things happen when one was alone? Pushing black hair behind one ear, the snake chewed at his lip, unfortunately he had a stud piercing in rather than his usual ring so instad of scratching up metal he took out his habits on his skin. "I mean, how much damage can a kitten do by himself, eh?"

Liao shook his head. "I... when I was young... rain used to drive me to try and... find someone, anyone... I... mother did... things... that... hurt..." He gulped, his eyes overly bright from the tears he was trying not to let out. Wei would hate that if he cried - he would probably think Liao weak. And he wouldn't let himself cry, even if he was alone. He couldn't let himself cry... "And she... sometimes found me on rainy days... After I stopped looking for her..." He finally losened the scarf from around his neck, at the same time tugging down his high collar to reveal the pale skin of his neck. There were bruises on it - deep ones, too, a dark shade of purple - that formed four small ovals one on top of the other and another oval on the other side of his neck - fingers.

The snake's frown deepened, brows furrowing in disbelief. Liao had expressed that his mother had abused him, or something along the lines, but Wei had never realized she...she had attempted to choke the poor kitten, or at least do obvious harm to one of the most tender areas in one's body.
The bruises... they looked fresh (he would know).
The snake looked almost sympathetic. At least he had never had to deal with an abusive parent, simply an unresponsive one. Scooting closer towards the boy, Wei examined the markings with careful eyes, one finger barely dusting over the boy's pale skin. "...Why the hell would a mother do this to their kid?' He asked softly, not really expecting an answer.
