Kimiko blinked slightly puzzled. "Hmmm... I...should...I?" she was staring at the book with a sort of coyish air, not certain whether to read it or not. "I mean...it might kinda sorta be intelligence training.... her green eyes were now wide as turned them between the texts she'd brought, and the mysterious book that appeared. "Ooooooh.....I don't need this kind of temptation...." her eyebrow twitched now looking slightly peeved that she was forced to make this choice. "Okay! I know how to solve this...iny..miny...miney...mo!"

Kimiko seemed absorbed by the book. Kino's next journey it seemed took her to a very different sort of land. Here, there seemed to be a strange sort of sadness about the entire place. The people in this country it seemed were completely convinced that the world was going to end the very next morning. When she asked the reason for the people believing as they did, they told Kino it was because the great priest of the southern tower prophesied it was true. Kino spent the day in this country shopping, and everything she received whether it be from food to supplies, everything was completely free
"The world is about to end after all." the store owners said.
"The world is about to end after all." The restaurant owners said.
"The world is about end after all." The Innkeeper said.

Kino sat in her free rather expensive looking room and looked out over the strange little country, was it true that world was going end? Hermes asked her. Kino said to ask her tomorrow.

Kimiko was tapping a finger on the side of her head. "That's...strange." she was nodding to herself. "If someone told me the world was about to end I'd just think they were crazy. I mean, who knows how to see the future? Nobody can, cause...cause if you saw the future then wouldn't the future change cause you just saw, and...and then if you realized that wouldn't change again, then if you realized that you realized wouldn't change again and....ahhh" She was now holding her head her eyes spirals. "That's...really confusing... and how would the entire world end any way... I mean, is some evil darklord supposed to come and do it, cause since evil can't win a hero would just stop them...but these people are all just accepting it...," she frowned "I just don't get it..."

Kimiko wondered. "Would other people act like that?" she muttered. 'I know my parents wouldn't act like that...no way!' then she thought of her nemesis 'Hmmm...maybe...Maboroshi would?' she tried to envision someone telling Maboroshi the world was about to end.

'Hm, fascinating...well, Kay cera cera, there's no use crying about it. If your so concerned about it why not kill yourself now and save armageddon the trouble.' the imaginary Maboroshi pushed up his glasses dully and walked away. Kimiko blinked at how oddly accurate that mental enactment was...her eyes twitched slightly. "She didn't even know what Kay cera, cera meant!

She continued to read...

When Kino got up the next morning, the sun rose just the same as it had the morning before, the ocean brought in it's waves, and birds flew over head. The world had not ended, the world was still there. Kino looked to Hermes and said. "No, I don't."

Kino was leaving to country to find a great crowd of discontented people outside the towers of North and South. They were shouting and cat calling, the priest of the south tower unable to explain why the world had not ended. He gave out a few feeble attempts but the people would have none of it. Kino started to leave before things became violent, but then all went quiet and Kino looked back. The Priest of the North tower emerged.

"Fear not people, the priest of the South tower has been misinformed. But I have consulted the true word and discovered the world shall not end for at least 30 more years!" All the people were relieved and happy, content to return to there homes now with no further fuss. Kino frowned slightly and an old man walked up beside her.

The old man seemed very old and very wise, and he looked to the young traveler and said. "Thirty years ago the priest of the south tower corrected the north towers prophecy... and thirty years before that the north did is it has done now... I wonder they'll do the day they finally get it right." he chuckled to himself and wandered off. Kino considered this, smiled, and drove off...

Kimiko laid the book back down. How odd... was this some kind of...metaphor? She turned the possibility over in her head. It could be, in fact she began to think the first chapter was a metaphor too. This book seemed to have hidden meanings in everything it contained. That could count as intelligence training...right? She seemed to be convincing herself.

"Yeah," she said a confirming shake of her head. "But then..." she turned back to the recent country. What was it trying to say she wondered. All the people in that country...the two towers, and even the old man... they seemed to be representations of something... she looked back down at the book...

The next chapter... Kimiko was now resting on her elbows the book on the ground before her, her legs bent in the air slightly. She started to read...

This chapter seemed shorter than the first two, it started as Kino was riding Hermes over a particularly rusty and ill kept stretch of rail road track, her eyes staring straight ahead. She was just getting a mind to stop for lunch when she saw a man with a railroad rig up ahead. She stopped and talked to the man owning the rig and he invited her to have some lunch with him, maybe even share some tales about her travels. She told him of a strange country, just over the mountains, where, like the first city she'd been too, people didn't have to work, and robots were all that were required. The thing that made this place strange was the fact that the people there worked anyway.

The man seemed to find this odd. "Hm, that's silly, why work when you don't have to. I've been doing this job for 50 years." he pointed behind him at the well polished and restored track. "Rail road company keeps paying me, so I must be doing something right." he laughed "Working when you don't have to, hah!"

Kimiko was actually starting to get a sort of feel for the theme of this...story, if you could call it that. It was like the entire world was some kind of weirdo philosophical clash... every chapter had some kind of moral or point it was trying to make. She frowned still puzzling. 'I wonder where a book like this came from...weird...she shrugged, her innocent green orbs flitting back to object of her focus, studying the words again...Kimiko wasn't a genius, but she wasn't stupid either...according to most opinions. She realized even though she'd only read about a third of the way through the chapter that the author was setting something up by this encounter... but what?

As Kimiko went back to reading, her minds eye seemed to play out the story. As Kino and Hermes continued down the track, they were pleased at how easy it was to drive on the well repaired tracks, and drove for a whole day until the next day, yet again around lunch time, they met yet another man with a rig. This man however, was disassembling the very tracks that the other man had worked so hard to restore, leaving the materials on the dirt underneath.

I've been doing this job for 50 years." he pointed behind him at long line of disassembled track. "Rail road company keeps paying me, so I must be doing something right." he laughed "Working when you don't have to, hah!"

Kimiko leaned back putting her hands behind her head watching the clouds as she pondered the stories encounter with a second man. The second man was making that other man's work totally pointless... it was...kind of sad... Kimiko felt sorry for the first old man, but...maybe that wasn't the point. She puffed out her cheeks thinking it over. 'Maybe it's that the first guy, who laughed about working for no reason...was all this time working for no reason himself...for 50 years no less... Kimiko frowned uncertain of how to take that... she slowly rolled herself back into an upright sitting position in front of the book, staring at it.

Kimiko was now chewing on the side of her mouth absently as she perused the parchment of the book, turning the page with a dry rasp as she kept on.

Kino it seemed kept on as well, she left the second old man behind and drove for yet another day. Yet once again, as if by providence, Kino yet again ran into another man with a rig. As before it happened to be lunch time, and also as before, the man greeted her with a warm air and gentle smile. The man once more invited her for lunch and to tell him of her travels...and yet again she couldn't help but notice the man's task. He was reassembling the railroad with the disassembled parts the second man was leaving behind, and reassembling them, restoring the tracks.

This time, while accepting the man's invitation to lunch, she explained to the third man the situation of the other two, as what they'd told her.

To this the third old man smiled and said "There not working for no reason." Kino looked at the man confused. "Our jobs may seem to counter act one another... but it's was never our tasks themselves that mattered." he looked up toward the sky as the two ate lunch. "We're all supporting our families, even if our jobs themselves seem roundabout and pointless, we were never working for our jobs to begin with..." he smiled again "I've worked this job for 50 years, and my families lived for 50 years because of it," Kino smiled at the old man as he looked at her with content eyes "So don't say it isn't worth it."

Kino bid the man farewell and got back on Hermes, riding off down the clean, well put together tracks...heading to the next part of her journey...

The dark haired academy student crossed her arms looking upward. She was smiling. "I get it..." she smiled nodding vigorously "Yeah! I liked that one!" She gave the peace sign to the heavens. "The men weren't working for no reason after all...just because they seemed to be, doesn't mean they were... everyone has there own reasons for doing things...I don't think anyone does things for no reason!" She was grinning ear to ear.

Then she paused for a moment. "Hmm...I...wonder if Maboroshi has reasons for the way he acts... I guess he must..."

She rolled her eyes from left to right across the sky as she thought it over. "I mean...I suppose maybe it's because...he's a jerk?" Her face was perfectly innocent as she muttered this. Then her imagination kicked in and she started to go off into her own world.

'Oh! Or maybe he's some cast away prince, discarded from his former home land and cast out into a cruel world!' She was pictured all this in heavily inked style as it played out in her head. 'He had to become cruel and wicked just to survive and he was slowly driven into madness!!' A vision of her nemesis standing atop a large pile of soldiers corpses appeared, his face insane and his laugh maniacal.

'OR!!" She went on 'Maybe he's some kind of man made super weapon! Created for the soul purpose of killing," She was still imagining the whole idea in grizzly detail. 'But he escaped his creators control and slaughtered him! Now he hates humanity and plans to destroy us ALL!!!" Maboroshi now stood amidst a thousand burning buildings, his expression cold and detached.

'ORRR!!!!' she stood up now her dramatic side taking hold "Maybe he's really a last member of a powerful clan who's brother murdered their entire family and he swore revenge! Now his only goal in life is to seek out his brother, and the power he'll need to destroy him! He separates himself from those around for fear of loss ever again, he even seeks to turn himself into his own idea of a monster so he doesn't even have to worry about the betrayals he knows he'll commit!!!" She stood pointing into the air for moment. She waved her waved dismissively "Naaah, that'd stupid." she sat back down. "He's probably just an evil jerk."

Kimiko turned the page and started a new chapter, her ranting and speculating over... for now.

Kino's journey now took her to strange country indeed, one where there was not a soul to be seen. The ruins of buildings and smell of death covered the land, but what was even more disturbing was when Kino and Hermes came across a grave yard, one which the book described as, an endless sea of crammed headstones. Kino searched around for a long time trying to find some sign of what had happened here... only to find one lone figure standing beside a mound of earth. The Figure was dressed in a long black cloak, but his face didn't seem at all covered. He seemed about 29 or 28, and his face seemed detached. A shovel was stuck in the earthen mound before him, and he beheld Kino with a rather shrewd expression.

Kino stepped forward, and asked the young man what had happened in this country. "It all started with a foolish man..." The Man explained.

"It usually does." Kino acknowledged.

Kimiko was now lying on her back against the tree, the book in her lap.

The young man Kino addressed looked out over the death engulfed country. "The foolish man was the king of this country, and he was a selfish and greedy man, who neglected his subjects and reveled in his control." The young man seemed entirely careless as he said all this, but their was power to his words. "The people became fed up with his foolishness, and revolting, leading an overthrow of his regime almost over night. The King was hung from the tallest tower and his family was banished forever under punishment of death." he looked at Kino still with little emotion "The people decided that the new form of government would be based on the ruling of the people themselves, a "Majority vote" as it were."

Kino nodded "I've been through many countries with similar stories."

The man gave a grim sort of smile "Yes...but sadly that's not where our story ends..."

Kimiko blinked intrigued and turned the page, her mind starting to muse.
