Maia moved away slightly, then looked to Toby. "Let's take Michael out to celebrate," she suggested. "Michael, where would you like to go?"
Mikey yawned and shifted into a koala. He climbed up Michael's arm and to his shoulder.

Michael took the shift very easily and simply followed his arms up beneath the diapered koala.
"I don't think it'd be a good idea to bring Mikey out just yet," Toby said carefully, but Michael seemed to already know. He just smiled and rubbed the baby between the furry ears.

...oh, of course. The baby couldn't go anywhere, not yet. Not in public. His shifting was unpredictable. There was something adorable, though, about seeing Michael with a baby koala on his shoulders.
"I meant this evening," she said. "You could stay at our place till morning, if you'd like." She looked to Michael and smiled. "I think he likes you, Michael."

Well, at least the baby would be safe in the evening. He'd have a jammer by the time they could take him home at night. One never know how many people would be on the street to see a young couple carrying a baby wombat through the streets.
"If you'd like," Michael said, and he smiled at the baby, "Good. I like him."
Toby piped up then: "You could even possess me. Be a man for once. We could go out for dinner somewhere nice!"

The baby transformed into a kitten and climbed up on Michael's head. He sat and purred, eyes squinted. He curled in a ball and seemed to fall asleep there. "We'll have fun," Maia added. "I'll show you our new house. You haven't seen it yet." She smiled and reached for Mikey. "We could bake a cake or something, too." Michael hadn't tried Toby's baking yet, not his cake anyway.

Michael made a soft sound and kept his hands behind and beside the baby to catch him should he fall, brushing against cottony fur at all times. He could see how this could be nerve-wracking. When Maia reached for the child, he gently untangled him and offered him out,
"I would like that," he agreed and smiled.
Toby smiled back. God, the whole room felt different, didn't it? He couldn't say hoe exactly, but it did.

Maia took the baby and smiled gratefully at Michael. "Thank you," she said. "Toby, do you know a good restaurant?" She asked, looking to her husband. She offered the kitten-Mikey to him. "We should introduce him to Seamus sometime," she said.
How would the cat sidhe react to an infant that could shift at any moment? Probably use him for food. "Maybe away from the kitchens."

"I know several," Toby said, "The question is of the Victorian palate." He went to pull out his phone, but got a kitten instead.
"I think you'd be surprised," Michael replied, "but I love to try new things. Victorian England was a very small place."
Toby nodded and smiled, then turned to Maia. "Seamus would love to meet him, especially if he was furry. I don't really know if he'd try to corrupt him right away or not."

Later that same evening, Maia and Toby were walking down a hallway together. Maia hated to leave Mikey in the nursery still, but they still had to prepare and have their house assessed.
"It's nice to see Michael so happy," she said, and smiled at Toby. She'd never expected the ghost to white light, after he'd told her that he couldn't. But he had! And he hadn't left. "I'm glad we get to celebrate this with him."

"He's apparently just been walking around all day," Toby said, "I mean full legs, greeting people, normal-person walking. He seems happy. I don't think anybody knows what happens if you don't cross over after a white-lighting. Lori seemed pretty excited to learn about it."

"Maybe he'll have a normal--afterlife?" Maia had been about to say life, and shook her head with a smile. "I'm glad he's so happy. It'll be nice to have others learn to love him like we do." A lot of coworkers we're afraid of the ghost--and some with good reason! He did enjoy frightening people, and cat sidhes. He didn't discriminate.
"Tomorrow, let's introduce Seamus to the baby."

"Sure, we can do that," Toby agreed. They reached Michael's room and he rang the bell. Like so many times before, Michael just suddenly appeared beside and in front of them. Toby startled and laughed and, oddly enough, Michael grinned, close to laughing with him.
"Are you ready to go?" Toby asked when the laughter had calmed, thrusting a thumb over his shoulder. Even Michael's clothes looked different, though he couldn't say how.
"I think I might be able to just... go," Michael said. He sounded both excited and skeptical.
"What do you mean?"
"You know, walk there with you, or ride," the ghost responded and looked down at himself. "I've been solid for hours. I'm not even tired."

Whitelighting really had made a difference, but Maia couldn't put her finger on it. He seemed more there. More real. He was definitely more solid. She smiled at him when he appeared.
"Then, let's go. If you get tired, you can possess one of us," she offered. She held out her hand to Michael, and the other to Toby. "Did you decide what you'd like to try?" She asked. Michael always seemed happy to try new things. Oh! And they'd have to take him to the bakery in the morning, since he was staying the night.

"I hadn't really thought about it," Michael said, "I suppose I could have gone on the internet..."
Toby waved a hand dismissively. "You don't have to spend your time on the computer. Today was a big day. I mean, a massive day." Michael had once told him that he thought he was locked out of the afterlife forever, unlike all the rest. Being whitelighted was huge, and then to not cross over? 'Massive' might even be an understatement. "I know this town pretty well. We'll go somewhere fancy, if you'd like. I mean we could go get a burger, but I figured we should celebrate."
"Yes, I'd like to celebrate. Allow me to pay, however. I don't want you to spend an excess on me."
"You're our guest."
"Tonight, allow me to be your naive host. I haven't purchased anything substantial in a long time. I have just as much to celebrate as you."
"You're different."
"I feel different."

Michael wanted to treat? Maia thought for a moment and smiled. "As long as you let us treat you at the bakery tomorrow," she said. She'd wanted to take him for a while, anyway. How excited would he be, with all those choices before him? Flavors of cupcakes, muffins, anything he could want.
"We could try sushi," Maia suggested. She'd last taken Michawl to an Italian restaurant. "Maybe the steakhouse? What sounds good, Michael?"
