Toby's eyed widened in question as Maia spoke, knowing that most of his face was bent and obscured by leaning over to kiss the baby. The name immediately read as his ghostly coworker, but he wasn't entirely sure why. It wasn't like Maia had forgotten about Michael. They were pretty good friends.
He straightened up and looked down at the baby. Well, he could be a Michael. Babies didn't necessarily look like any name in particular unless you'd already picked some out to choose from.
The werewolf smiled slowly, though, as he remembered his stint in the hospital. Michael was maybe not always the most reasonable of men, but he'd come a long way. Even a real a*****e deserved some recognition for saving a life, and Michael wasn't an a*****e. He was just dead.
"Michael-what, though?" he asked, "Or what-Michael?"

"You pick," Maia suggested, and smiled. They could both pick a name, then they'd just have to arrange it. "Michael for his first name, or middle name?"she asked. She wished she'd brought her phone! Toby and the baby were precious. They'd make a perfect picture.
Maybe she'd get Dari to take one--Dari didn't know! They had to tell him he was an uncle. "I like Mikey," she added, thoughtfully. He was tiny! Michael was an adult's name. Mikey suited the baby better. "What do you think?"

"I think you've already decided," Toby said with a chuckle. Maia was already constructing nicknames, and very few people went by a shortened version of their middle name. A nickname would be a good idea, though. Telling people at work about the time 'Michael' picked a lollipop off of the sidewalk and tried to eat it would probably cause a bit of confusion. Really Toby didn't care what the baby's name was so long as it wasn't going to get him teased in school, and naming children after deceased relatives or living parents could be more sad than anything.
"Michael... John? James? ...Jordan?" He smirked up at Maia. She had to know who Michael Jordan was by now. She'd been in the human world a long time.

Maia paused at the third suggestion and grinned. "We're not naming him after a basketball player! I like James, though." She kissed his cheek. She looked towards the nurse, then. "Can we take him to meet Dari?" She asked. If the alien hadn't heard, if Lori hadn't told him already--maybe they'd be able to surprise him! For once.
"Let's tell Michael, too. He told me he likes children."

"Michael James?" Toby asked, and then shifted the baby in his arms, "Did we just name our son?"
The nurse turned to Maia and smiled. "It might be better if Dari came here. If you walk around with a newborn, everyone's going to know and stop you," she suggested. "If you don't mind, though, you're free to bring him where ever you like."
Toby chuckled at Maia. "If he's named after the guy we'd better tell him."

Maia smiled at him. "I think we did," she said. "I'll go get Dari," she added, kissing tobys cheek. "You stay with Mikey." If they took Mikey to see him, the alien would undoubtedly hear about it before she got to him.
"We can take Mikey to Michael after," she said. Unless the ghost was already here? He did seem to be omnipresent at times.
She headed down the hall, towards the boys' office. "Dari! Cmon, Toby wants you." She took the alien's hand. "Let's go." The poor alien was dragged down to the nursery.

Dari perked up when Maia entered the office. He wasn't sure what was going on, but she sure did seem excited, didn't she? He smiled and let her drag him and, when they arrived, stepped in a bit confused. Toby beamed at him, but said nothing. Dari smiled back and approached the baby, stroking his tiny fist.

Maia was beaming. Dari hadn't heard! "We wanted to introduce you to your nephew," she said. "This is Mikey," she gestured to the baby. She wasn't sure Toby would let Mikey out of his arms just yet--and that was fine! They had all the time, now. Soon they'd be taking the baby home.
"I wanted to tell you first," Maia said, beaming.

Dari had nearly the same reaction as Toby had.
"What?" He looked to Toby, a slow grin spreading over his face. Toby smiled and nodded. Dari laughed and turned to the baby. now stroking his soft forehead and hair. "Mikey. Hello! What's his whole name?"
"Michael James. ...Aikley."
"He's beautiful."
The trio stood there for a time, and then Toby looked to Maia. "Do you want to hold him?" Of course she did, but he wasn't going to just toss the baby at her and hope she caught him.

Maia beamed at Dari's reaction. "I knew you'd make a great uncle," she said, and kissed his cheek.
She reached for the baby. "I'm still so worried I'll drop him," she admitted, and took Mikey carefully. "Hi baby," she greeted, carefully supporting his head. She gently rocked him, and took a moment to admire him. She looked up at Toby and smiled. "I can't believe he's ours."

"Everyone is at first," the nurse piped up, "Nobody ever does."
Toby smiled and got behind Maia to watch the baby over her shoulder. Dari sidled up beside them.
"We're going to have to drop a lot of money on this little guy," Toby said, though he didn't seem very worried. Credit cards were a thing for a reason, and the grant from HQ would help a lot. "At least if we want to get him home soon."
"I can help," Dari said.
"You just bought a house."
"So did you."

Maia smiled at the nurse. She was grateful for the reassurance, it'd be something she'd get better at over time.
""He's worth every penny." Maia looked over her shoulder. "We can look at thrift stores too, they always have cute baby clothes." And it wasn't like money was an issue, with their jobs. She smiled at Dari when he offered to help. "Want to help pick the perfect color for his nursery?" She asked.
Mikey yawned and transformed into a baby sloth. Maia startled but kept hold of him. "I'll have to get used to that, too."

"Yeah, of course," Toby said. He had done well even as a human; not this well, of course, but well enough and had still thrifted and sifted through clearance racks. Some people enjoyed spending their money and showing it off simply because they had it. Toby just preferred knowing he wasn't going to have to worry. Quality mattered, but that was just about it.
"Yes, I'd love to," Dari said. He was still grinning, though he had taken his eyes off of the baby for a moment to smile at Maia.
Toby laughed as the baby-- Mikey-- transformed and reached out to pet his furry head. "We'll have to get a jammer so that doesn't happen in public. I want him to be able to do normal kid things and not be stuck in the house. When he gets old enough to understand we can just take it off."

Maia smiled at Dari. It'd be perfect, with his help. "We'll have fun picking one out."
"Yeah, that would be good," Maia nodded. She could imagine the fear an infant shifting would cause, only from how Toby had told her how his own mother had reacted. She'd hate to have to keep him inside. "Do you want to hold him, Dari?"

"Yes, please," Dari said, and he slid his arms in to scoop Mikey out of Maia's arms. Come a certain age, surface-dwelling children began to fear the darkness. Some argued that it was learned and others that it was instinctual, but whatever it was it made them not so enthused about a night-black man shape with glowing eyes. Babies, though, they were too young to care. Dari had always liked babies, though he had met predictably few. Now he cradled the little sloth and spoke softly to him and stroked his soft, lanky arm with a thumb.
