I found that while I was looking up the subjunctive mood just now. I thought people here might be interested.

I speak 3 of them (English, Russian, French) and all 3 of those are so different that I don't see how any one language can evolve into so many different languages, even after 4K years.

I was surprised the first time I heard about the concept, actually. Germanic languages seem so different to, say, Romance languages that it's hard to imagine them coming from the same root.

I can quite honestly say that I believe in the concept. The languages, for all their dissimilarities, do share many things in common; there are words in Sanskrit that sounds very similar to Romance languages. The fact that nearly every European language started off with a case system, the way we don't have tones, like Asian languages do.
Even languages that are genetically closely related i.e. Slavic Langs have less in common with each other than they do with certain Romance languages. For example, Romanian shares silimilarities with Bulgarian, and both share similarities with Greek and Turkish, and yet are fairly unrelated.
And just look at how much English has evolved in just two millennia.
Then again, I am a linguistics student, so I'm supposed to know this stuff.

I'd guess at LEAST six.
