 @Tas: I think most people just assume that people on Gaia will give their avi the same sort of skin-tone they have (if it's a human avi), and since your avis usually have un-human skin tones or are completely covered they just assume that you're white since you're avi doesn't have dark skin.
or maybe that's just me and I'm being unintentionally racist emo

@ Nespin - Well if I were to strip the skin accessory from my avatar, the base skin would be dark (always has been). I could understand if I was wearing a "light-skinned" base. *shrugs*
So basically you're saying anyone who where's a skin accessory is personified as being "not-black" to some/most users?

But why do some people have to spaz like they saw an alien or something. Like seriously, I don't really notice the same reactions if someone turns out to be Asian or Hispanic.

I dunno. Maybe it's because a large portion of people on Gaia are part of the anime-fan community, and go to cons and stuff. And from my experience...there are very few black people at anime cons, but there are TONS of white people and a considerable amount of asian people. Though the lack of black people at the con I've gone to may just be due to location and the fact that this area is mostly white.
but I remember in the manga Dramacon, one of the characters is black and people are surprised to see a black girl with a table in the AA...and some little jack-a** of a kid said that she shouldn't draw anime because she's black scream (my guess is the author has seen racism like that occur at cons or something)
