Rising Hourglass
Honestly, a DBZ setting sounds like a pretty awful powerframe to base a roleplay around. Seeing as half the cast was uselessly weak at the halfway mark.

That's exactly what I'm talking about.

It's like Akira Toriyama forgot everything the original series meant with the whole Journey to the West reference when he wanted to get original, which only just made everything look weird. That's why when he gave characters like Tien little moments of glory against the big-bads in DBZ, it was much more interesting than seeing the main characters fight.

DBZ IS a horrible reference point for character power.

DERP I EXPLODE PLANETS.

EDIT:: That being said, almost any setting or universe can be done right.. it's just a question of how many people out there can manage that.

These notices are wearing on my nerves.

Yeah. As far as DBZ goes, anything past Raditz is ridiculous. I mean, directly after that was Vegeta, and even at his WEAKEST he could destroy a planet.

Whether it was just him creatively using a beam attack to destroy the core of a planet or actually having the power needed to devastate it, it's far too ridiculous in scale. I don't know why anyone thought that kind of jump so early in the series was a good idea.

I mean, hell, once you do that, you pretty much devalue everything else.

New Villain: I'm going to destroy this planet!
Heroes: (sarcasm mode) Oh wow, you must be some sort of big deal, huh?

Dragon Ball, on the other hand, was something that looked like you could easily work with, since things were more martial arts centered. In fact, I don't think anyone was even flying in Dragon Ball until the very end, but I kinda stopped watching it after a point so I don't know.

And yet people continued to be amazed at 'how big that explosion was' when someone knocked over a mountain or something.

I dunno. It never amazed me. Like I said, it pretty much devalued things.

When the characters made a big stink about Buu destroying the Earth, I was like "Did people forget how easy these guys can destroy a planet? This should be expected now."

Same thing went for the idea of people dying off. When characters could get ressurected like that, the gravity of someone being killed didn't really strike me. You can only pull the ressurection stunt once before it starts getting old.

I thought it was funny when they first started the Android Saga on English TV. Toonami sold it as if Frieza coming back was the big deal, completely overlooking the fact that he was simply there for the Reverse Worf Effect.

The only times I was amazed in DBZ is when they did something different or unexpected. Like Gohan kicking a Cell Jr.'s head so hard it exploded.

Granted, this was before I even heard of Fist of the North Star, where exploding heads is what Kenshiro does best.

The whole series would have been improved if there was more screaming.

DBZ was supposed to end with Freiza.

And it should have, really. The only thing I like after Freiza Saga is Cell, and that's sort of hit and miss. Only good because Cell was a good villain and the time travel s**t was entertaining.

Also, Goku flew around on the nimbus a LOT in DB iirc. But yeah, DB is a lot easier to work with in terms of power level.

This.

I was just looking at the uncut remastered DBZ stuff on Youtube, and it really did culminate at Frieza. Afterwards, the whole idea of a throwback to the old days with the Androids was interesting except for the fact that the Androids didn't feel like Androids. If they did more robot-esque stuff it'd actually fit, like how 16 was.

Cell was an interesting concept, though, and when I was a kid I kinda liked how creepy he was with the whole sucking people's guts out and stuff. I thought Buu was a fun concept too, but he was -too- powerful...even though genies are supposed to be powerful.

I don't know whether it was during the Cell saga or at the start of the Buu saga, but somewhere along the line the art style kinda annoyed me. But looking back at Dragon Ball up to the Frieza saga, the artwork isn't as annoying to me.

Edit: Yes, I know he flew around on the Nimbus. It should've stayed that way to preserve the Sun Wukong reference. Once he started flying on his own, that was lost, and Nimbus was kicked to the curb.

The very ICON of the character Goku was based off of was kicked to the curb. Same goes for the staff, except for some later uses.

You all enjoyed DBZ and you liked it. You all couldn't wait to get back home and watch the next episode of Dragonball Z on Toonami. Stop lying to yourselves.

*shrugs* I watched like 1 or 2 episodes of DBZ. Never seen any episodes of any of the other DB. Don't really care to. Never struck me as something I'd enjoy overly much.

Edit: I usually got home at like 7 or 8 and I'd watch Stargate or Star Trek or whatever was on at the time.

I never said I didn't like it. I liked it up until Freiza, and I like part of Cell's Saga.

Doesn't mean I consider it to be that well put together, or operable in terms of roleplaying or storytelling.

This.

I enjoyed it in its purity, but even I can accept that it went places I wish it didn't.
