For example. Me, damp, cmainer, you, rolf, and kilik are all in the area code 01234. We enter that code, go there, and decided to just chat in the center of the area. If Ember wants to join, he punches in the area code, and hops on a train to our little villa. If I want to see Damp's house I can walk over to it, and walk inside. Later on they plan to add butterfly nets for town events such as bug catching.
The reason why this is the precursor to the battle system is so people can wander out of the town areas, and just attack an enemy between towns. Without the town system we'd be pretty much at a stand still as far as new features go.
