Children Of The Flame

Gion walked close to Nadya's side, making sure he still had room to draw his sword if necessary. He didn't want to be taken by surprise, and though he could see different auras with the sight he had gleaned from Daemon, he still wasn't sure what all of the colours meant, or if they were the same between elves and dwarfs or not. Most of all, he was alert for any sort of danger.

He paid no attention to where they were going: he let Nadya take care of that; but he paid attention instead to the people they were passing. For some reason, the dwarfs didn't bother him as much as the humans they passed, despite the fact that the dwarfs were the ones who were being openly hostile.

Donovan looked about, eyeing those that were passing them warily. He wondered if it was just because it was the three of them, or if the town was naturally like this. He was pretty sure if was the former, he also couldn't hlep but wonder what sort of business the humans did with these people.

He kept close to the rear of the two, shoving his hands into the pockets of his trench coat. The man fledged indifference to the two around him.

"I said slow down!" Lin yelled trying her best to keep up, which wasn't working as he was getting far away.

She eyed his leg, it wasn't like he was going to notice she was so small, and she figured it wouldn't hurt. Lin tried to take long strides until she finally jumped and pounced on his leg, holding on.

Ruel was startled to feel something latching onto his leg, and he looked down to see what it was. When he saw Lin, he frowned, then reached down to pick her up. He spoke to her roughly, holding her at arm's length. His tone was questioning, but (of course) in elvish.

Slowly, Nadya allowed her sight to take over for her, and she became oblivious to everything around her: physically blind, she saw nothing, and the crowds around them, even the presence of her two companions, were essentially absent from her. She knew where she was going and when there was something in her way. Her goal was growing slowly closer, and that was all she allowed herself to worry about at the moment.

But still ... in the recesses of her mind she heard children's voices crying out to her for help ... where were they coming from? Why here? Why now?

She brushed them aside mentally and focused on the dwarf leader once more.

Gion kept a wary eye out for danger, and he was amazed at how calm Donovan looked. Either he was a careless idiot ... or he was so good at what he did that he could keep calm through anything.

Gion was tempted to think the latter.

Still, he didn't allow himself to even appear relaxed. It went against every instinct within him ... especially with Nadya surrounded by so much danger. She, of course, would be of no help in a fight. He didn't hold it against her, it was simply a fact - and one that he and Donovan both needed to be well aware of.

But perhaps the biggest reason that he couldn't relax was because he couldn't shake off a feeling that something was wrong.

They passed more travellers and as Donovan eyed the family, he wondered if this was normal. Granted, if these people were merchants of course it was normal to bring your kids, but in a place like this... He looked around him, as if a traveller who was curious of his surroundings even though the expression of indifference did not change.

He turned back to see Gion and Nadya, Nadya seemed kind of out of it, or it could be a seer thing. He didn't work with seers that often.

"Gion," he finally spoke softly, depending on the fact most humans or dwarves for that matter didn't know his language, "How often do people take their family with them on these business trips?"

Lin tilted her head, since she didn't understand what in the ehck she was saying at all. She smiled anyways and cuddled into his hand, because she thought that maybe he would carry her the rest of hte way.

It was hopeful thinking, but one couldn't blame her.

"I'll be there just until you get to work," she told him.

Ruel sighed and passed the child off to one of the guards that lined the hall. He spoke to him in a sharp tone, his voice commanding and firm. Then he strode off down the hall, leaving the guard and the child alone.

The guard blinked at the prince as he walked away, then looked down at the child that had been handed to him. Holding her like a newborn infant in his arms, he resumed his post without a word.

Gion looked up at Donovan and shook his head gently.

I can't imaging people taking their children to this area, he signed. Other areas perhaps, but not here. This is an inhospitable land - you know this from the few days we've spent up here. No decent person would submit their children to it.

He glanced around again. You're right, though, he signed to Donovan once more. I've got a very strong feeling that something's not right, and it's ... something to do with the humans and the children they have with them.

Donovan paid attention, to Gion's hands it was nice to have someone who's method of communication was not known to majority of the population.

"I thought it was odd, my clan has done some extreme things while on duty, but this isn't one of them," he murmured, "Besides," he commented, "Where are the women? If they're going to drag the kiddies along where in the hell are the mothers?"

Lin looked up at the guard before looking back down, it was a long way down she finally decided.

"Please put me down," she spoke to the guard, remembering her manners.

She smiled up at him.

The guard looked down at Lin and smiled back at her, but he shook his head firmly once before resuming his statuesque stance. He had been ordered not to put her down for five full minutes, and he would obey his orders.

Gion shook his head again and brought his hands up to sign, What are you thinking? Daeron?

He didn't know if Donovan would recognize the signs for the name, but he tried it anyways, just in case.

Nadya's sight brought them to the doors of what seemed to be some sort of passage that led to a cave. She blinked her Sight away and looked at the doors. They weren't guarded, nor was there any sort of latch. It seemed far too easy, too open ... but this was where they needed to be.

She reached out with one trembling hand and pushed on the stone doors. They swung inward easily at her touch, opening into a lit passageway that sloped gently downwards into the ground.

She glanced back at Gion and Donovan, who were still right behind her (she was relieved to see). "Well?" she asked them softly.
