I want your honest opinion. Do you think the hotspur finish looks ugly? I tried one out yesterday, and I loved the horn. I think my parents might buy me the saxophone.

On the Cannonball? I think it's hip. It reminds me of the Keilwerth Shadow.

If you can, go for it. : )

I found a box of La Voz that I bought a long time ago, but lost before I could open 'em.

I'm actually impressed with them. They're kinda soft for me now, but they still have a very distinct sound that I'm growing fond of.

They're right, it does look like a bass clarinet ^_^ I like it though! Personally, I'd definitely be interested in playing one!

Hey, I looked into the Hotspur. It's a Cannonball, so you know you'll probably get your money's worth.

As for the finish, I'm impressed. "Iced," means that the brass was sand blasted prior to it's plating. This whole time I thought that's what all saxs go through. Eitherway, the sand blasting will probably shave off a very thin layer of the brass, theoretically creating a brighter sound.

The funny thing is, silver plating on horns is actually incredibly thin. Mayber even as thin as the portion that gets sand blasted off. Lacquer coats are much thicker because they need to be to stick to the brass. The metal plating essentially fuses to the brass, creating a more unified sound.

So I guess you could kind of think of the iced silver portions as being a saxophone with it's top layer of brass replaced with silver.

This goes with the nickel portions.

I know that the "fake silver" nickel is generally considered inferior to actual silver plating, but the black nickel has a very nice reputation. It's an alternative to black lacquer in that it won't peel off because it's a plating not a lacquer coat and that it's not as thick. Again, plating isn't actually that thick.

Supposedly, black nickel has a reputation for being brighter than black lacquer, just because of the way it, as a metal plating, bonded to the brass.

I also want to add that the neck and bow/bell sections are probably silver because those are points that do well to resonate as much as possible. Thicker walls don't resonate quite the same way. The thicker body walls might give more "body," but the silver neck and bell are probably more projecting.
My friend's sax teacher has a sax like this, only gold lacquered instead of black nickel.

Also, remember this is a Big Bell, right?
This is a pretty mean looking horn. I'd say get it. It's built to be loud and attention grabbing. If you want one of the edgier saxs out there, I suspect this Hotspur might be a contender.

(Oh, and the reviews I read for it were all good.)

Still, there wasn't much stuff I could find.

But there is a problem with Cannonballs and the Hotspur finish. I am not a jazz player. I mainly play classical music. At first I wanted to get a Selmer, but my parents don't want to fork out that much money for a saxophone.

Cannonballs seem like the only half decent brand in my parents' price range.
