"Perfect!" Mike cheered, pumping his fist as he saw Rosemary's Razor Leaf attack slash their foes. That was exactly what he needed. "Thanks babe!"

Tate's resolve didn't falter at the super effective hit. He was however, curious as to what the strange challenger was up to with his concealed fire type. Why was he being evasive? Claydol's defenses were good, but a Flamethrower or Fire Blast would still do a solid amount of damage. There must be something he was holding out for. Something stronger. No matter. "Claydol. Earth Power. Aim for the fire type." The gym leader's Pokemon made no noise to signify compliance, but began to slowly spin in place. Picking up speed, the Claydol's spout-like arms detached from its body, floating still in the air. The Pokemon spun like a drill, and without warning slammed into the ground, sending a shock wave through the floor which traveled towards Napalm. Inside the smokescreen, the Magmortar could do little but take the hit. Mike winced as he saw the arena beneath Napalm explode in a shower of dirt and rocks, gritting his teeth as he heard his Pokemon's grunt of pain.

"Fight through it Napalm, use Sunny Day!" The boy let out a sigh of relief when he saw an orange glow shine through the creases of the smoke, and soon the sun was beating down with even more intensity. While the gym trainers, Tate, Liza and maybe even Kasiya might not appreciate the sudden increase in temperature, Mike and Napalm loved it. "Now this is more like it!" the boy grinned, holding out his arms and taking in the heat.

((OOC: It's alright you're posting a lot of stories. Let's just have fun with all the criminals ;o))

"Thanks for letting me scan you guys. Sorry if I bothered you." He waved at the pokemon before they went back into their respective containers. Turning to the professor he eagerly shook his, smiling all the while. "Thank you sir. I'll be sure to do that. Just one more question before I go. How many water types does your town have at the beach. I'm not familiar with this area at all."

It would be a great chance to get a water type before he went to the gym in Pewter city. As it stood now two thirds of his team was weak to rock and only one would be able to have the type advantage.

Flannery had started to hold her breath as the Swellow rocketed off toward the rafters, escaping the jets of flame shot at it by Keegan's father's Blaziken. That bird is fast, she thought, glancing at the other redhead as he called for an Aerial Ace. This was going to be good; she knew it! Flannery's assumption would prove to be correct and Artemis' blistering speed was just too much for the Fire-type, and in a flash of flames and feathers, it was all over, and the gym leader gave a sigh, crossing her arms over her chest and giving a nod. Yep, I knew it! she thought. I knew he could do it! It was at that point that she remembered what she was supposed to be doing and she laughed nervously. "Blaziken's unable to battle! Keegan wins! Keegan wins!" she called, raising her arm. She really wasn't so good at this whole refereeing-thing and she wasn't in a hurry to do it again, though seeing that intense match had her wanting to get back to her own training. Yeah, we'll all be all right, she smiled, looking over at her childhood friend as his very-happy Swellow smothered him with love and affection. She wanted to ask him what he planned to do next, but she figured it was probably best that she keep her distance for now, as there would probably be words (and good ones, hopefully!) exchanged between Mr. Summers and his son.

"Okay, so now what?" Jake murmured, straightening up and looking around again. His two Pokemon looked just as clueless as their trainer, and he definitely wished that he knew where that Madison girl had gotten to. As though summoned by his thoughts, the girl's giggling could be heard from above them. Shivers traveled down his spine as he turned to look, seeing the girl standing at the top of the grand staircase.

"C'mon, Jake!" she called, waving to him. "Let's go play!" Giggling, she turned and darted off down the right wing.

"Wait, Maddie!" Jake called after her. "What about your friend?" Without a second thought he gave chase, vaulting up the stairs in only a few steps thanks to his long legs. Of course, by the time he got there, the pig-tailed girl was long gone and Jake stood on the landing, looking perplexed. He was starting to get the feeling that he was not dealing with a normal kid and immediately felt stupid for not realizing it sooner. Memo to self, the next time you meed a creepy child in the forest, just walk away, he thought, looking over his shoulder at his two Pokemon, both of which hadn't bothered to follow him up the stairs. "Figures. Hey, are you guys coming or not?" he called, once again hearing the girl's laughter from up ahead. The two Pokemon stared at him intently, and he sighed. "Fine, suit yourselves."

He continued along down the hallway, following the giggles despite the uneasy feeling that continued to grow in the pit of his stomach. He swung open a pair of large doors and found himself looking into what appeared to be a child's playroom, or at the very least, what used to be. The wallpaper, once pink and flowery was stained yellow from time and neglect and was peeling in more than one place. Cracked and dusty photographs were hung on the walls and the carpet, once plush, soft and comfortable, was now mildew-eaten. Various toys were strewn about the floor, broken and covered in grime, and one corner sported a bookshelf that must have been knocked over years ago. Off to another corner was a child-sized table and chairs, complete with though interestingly enough it all seemed in perfect condition. Seated at one of the small chairs was Madison, her stuffed Teddiursa still clutched tightly under one arm as she poured imaginary tea from a cute ceramic pot into a tiny, matching teacup. "Jakey!" she called, waving at him again. "Come play tea party with me!"

By now, Karrigan was more than a little confused by the dark-haired boy's one-sided conversation, and she looked around subtly. Just who is this guy talking to? she thought, watching as his Gastly made its way out onto the deck. She was obviously missing something, but she decided not to dwell on it. He'd given the command for a Night Shade and the Gastly quickly complied, firing off a dark-looking beam.

Okay Amber, don't let me down, the redhead thought, having not forgotten the debacle back in Celadon. "Try to dodge it, and use Confuse Ray!" The Vulpix flicked her tails in annoyance, but she also hadn't forgotten what had happened at that gym and she was still quite angry about it. The Ghost-type's attack was tricky however and despite her quick movements, the sinister beam struck her flank, sending a creeping chill through her whole body that disturbed her on many levels, considering that she was naturally warm all the time as she was a Fire-type. She regained her composure and quickly turned to glare at the Gastly, her eyes shining with a sinister light of their own and she gave a cry, sending out a rapidly-moving ball of light to try and confuse her opponent.

Kasiya beamed at the praise from Mike, very glad that she'd been able to help in whatever it was that he was planning. Rosemary's Razor Leaf had been great as well, and she was quite glad to have brought the Meganium along with her. Yeah, I definitely need to let her battle more, she thought, recalling Rosemary and Leviathan's double-evolution. It seemed for the longest time that Rosemary was the stronger of the two, but admittedly she'd been relying on the Swampert a lot more lately. The Claydol's Earth Power shook the ground, and both the Grass-type and her trainer winced. "Rosemary, use Light Screen," Kasiya said urgently. It would definitely help to protect against their opponents' attacks, most of which were likely to be of the special variety anyway. Rosemary gave a cry and two panes of shining light appeared, one protecting her, the other serving as a barrier for Napalm.

Kasiya, meanwhile, winced slightly under the effects of Napalm's Sunny Day, but she quickly realized it was nothing compared to what they'd been through at Mt Chimney the other day. The thought of their assault on the base triggered another memory though, and suddenly Kasiya knew what Mike planned to do on his next turn.

"Nice move, Brother," Liza commented after Tate's Claydol's Earth Power, though it was easy to see that it wouldn't be that easy to bring down their challengers' Pokemon. The blonde girl had called out for a Light Screen, which was pretty smart, and the female twin smiled, the warmth of the Sunny Day seemingly not bothering her in the slightest. "Now, Grumpig, Shadow Ball!" The sparkling pane of light had shone through just enough to give away the Meganium's position, and though the damage would be partially blocked, it was something, at least. The Psychic-type gave a cry before winging the shadowy orb at the Meganium. Rosemary gave a cry, but stood strong, and if anything, looked a little more determined than before.

"Water-types, you ask?" Oak said, scratching his chin thoughtfully. He hadn't been down to the water in quite some time, but he was pretty sure he still remembered what Pokemon lived in the area. "Well, there are Tentacool, out in the deeper areas of the water, naturally. Along the shore, you're likely to find Shellder and Krabby, and perhaps the odd Staryu, if you're lucky. Those ones can be quite elusive when they want to be." The professor smiled, quickly understanding why Kressen was so interested in aquatic Pokemon - the first gym, located way north of here, was the Pewter Gym, and the young man in charge of that gym was a Rock-type specialist. "Oh, and there are plenty of Magikarp," the professor added, chuckling a bit. "So many Magikarp."

It didn't take long for Keegan to discover that burnt bird feathers smelled really, really bad as he was knocked to the ground by the overly-excited Artemis, and as small as she was, it was rather difficult to get her off him. "Okay, yeah, you did it, you're awesome, get off," the redhead grumbled, finally managing to shoo the Swellow away and he got to his feet. "Seriously, though. You were amazing," he told the bird again, and she gave a chirp, though it sounded pained and Keegan remembered that she'd been burned. He recalled her into her PokeBall, staring at the sphere in awe for a few seconds before he'd clipped it onto his belt. One knockout, and two Pokemon with burns, but he'd won it. He allowed the tiniest smile to crease his lips, though it vanished when he realized his father was walking toward him, a sense of purpose in his step. Uh oh, the redhead thought, taking an involuntary step back. Perhaps he should have let the old man win after all? Nah, Todd Summers had like, a sixth sense for sensing half-assery and he would have known for sure if Keegan let him win. The redhead straightened up as his father closed in, not entirely sure of what he should be expecting. "Hey, Dad," was all he managed to squeak out.

"Hey, yourself," Todd replied, his expression unreadable. "That was something else, boy. I'm rather impressed."

"You are? Really?"

"Yeah, well, you won, didn't you? What'd you think, that I was coming over here to tell you that you could do better?" Todd asked, looking slightly put-off.

Even Keegan wasn't sure just why it happened, but something seemed to snap in him just then. His heart began to pound as he could already feel his anger starting to build, and though he knew he should probably stay calm, all the years of hardship came crashing down on him at once. "Actually, yeah, that's exactly what I was expecting," the younger Summers practically spat. "After all, that's pretty much how it's been all my life, hasn't it? Never could do anything right, or good enough for you, now could I?"

"This is hardly the time, or place for this kind of discussion, boy," grumbled the older Summers, his voice alone sounding like a warning.

"Oh, no, no. I think this is the perfect time for this discussion!" Keegan growled right back.

"Keegan!" Maggie's shrill voice cut across the arena like an Absol's Razor Wind. She'd come down from the viewing area and was making her way across the field towards her husband and son. "Don't you speak to your father like that!"

Livid, the boy turned his harsh glare on his mother. "Why not, Mom?" he asked, taking a single step toward her. "Because you're on his side, like you've always been?" His hands were clenched into tight fists at his sides, and his whole body was shaking with fury. "All these years, you just stood back and let him treat me like crap - like his own personal slave, and you never did anything to stop him!" A hushed silence had fallen over the remaining spectators, most of whom were trying to inch their way out of the gym in a respectable manner, as this was obviously a discussion that wasn't meant to have an audience.
=====
Damien looked on, his expression blank as Gastly's Night Shade went off without a hitch. The corners of his mouth twitched ever so slightly as it made contact with the little fox, but that was it. Gastly, meanwhile, was frowning as well, mostly because he'd underestimated his opponent's speed. "You might want to dodge that..." Damien offered as the Vulpix launched a retaliatory Confuse Ray. Gastly's eyes went wide and he tried to drift out of the way, but that moving light ball was difficult to track and the next thing he knew, down was up and left was right and vice versa and he could hardly keep himself afloat. "...or not," Damien sighed. "Confuse Ray, right back at it."

That would have been a marvelous idea, except for the fact that Gastly was too confused to hear what his trainer was saying. "Punch myself in the face?" he asked, tilting his whole body slightly. "That'll be difficult as I lack hands, but if you insist..." And just like that, the Ghost-type had face-planted the deck, having become somewhat solid in order to accomplish this.

"See? Didn't I tell you that you'd do a fine job of making yourself look bad all on your own?" was all Damien had to say on the matter.

Karrigan wasn't really one to show much emotion either, but she did look rather relieved when Amber's Confuse ray proved to be successful, and she even smirked a bit when the Ghost-type threw itself into the floor. Now's our chance, she thought, looking to her Fire-type. "Amber! Use Ember!" she called. She was aware of the fact that her Vulpix preferred her Fire Spin technique over Ember, but a whirling vortex of fire could prove to be too much as they were battling on a boat, after all. The fox darted forward, eager to open her mouth and bathe this odd Pokemon with her flames, but as she did, something else in her mind clicked just then. She gave a cry and disappeared, reappearing at the confused Gastly's side in time to throw herself into him with an almost-tackling motion. That was Faint Attack, the redhead thought, recognizing it quickly as it was one of Ikouma's favorites to use in battle. It seemed Amber had learned a new move!

With keen interest he listened to what the professor had to say. The information could very well determine a new friend and the dynamic of his team in the coming gym battle. A Tentacool was out of the question since it would require a tank or pool to be effective in a battle. He doubted a rock type gym would have a pool in it since of the rock type's huge weakness to water.

The same applied to magickarp, but a shellder, staryu, or krabby would be perfect though since they could function well enough on land. "Alright, thanks again professor. I'll be on the look out for some on the beach or in the shallows. I don't think it would be wise to swim out and try to battle a water type with my team as it is."

Mike smiled sheepishly as he saw the wave of realization crash upon Kasiya's face. She knew exactly what he was going to do, and odds are she wasn't thrilled about it. But this one wasn't meant for him, honest! He didn't dare utter that thought out loud though, because he knew the only dot at the end of that sentence would be a bruise on the side of his face from his girlfriend' fist. He chuckled, not in rebellion, but in anticipation of his opponent's face when his Pokemon was reduced to a smoldering husk. "Now Napalm," he said, a lyrical tone to his voice. "Solarbeam!"

"What." was all that Tate could say before a giant beam of yellow light shot out from inside the smokescreen. The rush of air from the attack blew the smoke away like an over eager four year old at a birthday cake. The attack slammed into Claydol, who had no time to react before being blasted across the arena and slamming into the wall, instantly out. Mike put his hand to his mouth in attempt to cover his smirk but failed, his glee written all across his face. He seemed to be making a habit out of hanging his opponents like picture frames. The now fully revealed Napalm lowered his cannons and exhaled heavily. His body was covered in scrapes and cuts from the earlier attack. "Impressive." the Gym Leader said finally, wrinkling his brow at the immobile Claydol still embedded in the wall. He recalled his Pokemon. "I'll admit I wasn't expecting that."

"It's okay." Mike said, rocking back and forth on the balls of his feet. Still giddy over pulling what he thought was a great diversion. "I've been told I'm a bit hard to read."

Tate smiled, still not sure what to think of this challenger. "We'll see. This is my last Pokemon, go Solrock!" With a flick of his wrist, the boy sent the Pokeball high in the air, and out came the Meteorite Pokemon.

"Again, Napalm!" Mike yelled, not wanting to give his opponent any time to react. "Another Solarbeam!" With ample sunlight to draw from, the Magmortar raised his cannons high and loosed another attack. The force from the blast jerked his arms back slightly, but he managed to steady himself, if only just.

"Ha!" Tate pumped his fist. "That won't work again! Psychic!" Solrock's usually narrow eyelids sprang open wide, revealing two frighteningly tiny red pupils. A blue aura surrounded the Pokemon and Mike saw the Solarbeam attack suddenly curve around Solrock in midair and arc back towards Napalm. Too fatigued from using such a powerful move twice in succession, Napalm could only grit his teeth to prepare himself. The beam collided with the Magmortar with a brilliant explosion, and even with the added protection from the Light Screen, Napalm was sent tumbling to his trainer's feet, unable to continue. "I don't know." Tate said, inspecting his nails tauntingly. "Dramatic. Flashy. Impractical. You're not too tough to figure out." He flicked his eyebrows up, smirking at his challenger, whose face was now completely crooked in complete shock. Mike stood there for a moment, totally silent before bursting out in an uproarious shrill laughter.

That's it, Rose! Show me just how tough you are! Kasiya thought, remembering that her Meganium would benefit at least somewhat from the bright sunlight. The Grass-type was naturally hardy and the Light Screen had helped her to defend against some of the damage, and she stood strong, looking almost uncharacteristically confident. She'd been quite a bit more assertive since her evolution and Kasiya wondered if it had anything to do with her best pal, Leviathan.

Liza's brow furrowed a bit and it was obvious the Shadow Ball hadn't done as much as she'd hoped it would. She raised her arm to issue her next attack, but both she and her blonde-haired opponent were temporarily frozen in their tracks as the Magmortar let loose a Solarbeam that put an end to Tate's Claydol's time on the field. "Whoa," the elder twin murmured, the corner of her mouth turned up ward in a slight smirk. Sure, she and her brother were on the same side in all this, but it was fairly safe to say that she was glad that it was not her Pokemon. She turned her attention back to the Meganium as her brother's signature Solrock entered play, effortlessly turning back the Magmortar's second Solarbeam and scoring a rather impressive revenge knockout. "Grumpig, use Zen Headbutt," Liza called, and the Psychic-type began to charge at Rosemary, the top of its head glowing with a brilliant blue.

After witnessing Napalm's Solarbeam, Kasiya became quite positive that she'd never be able to not think of what almost happened back at Mt. Chimney whenever seeing the attack used, but it was more than obvious that Mike had his end of the battle well under control. The strange Solrock made her feel uneasy, but she turned her focus back on her own Pokemon as it had been given the command for Zen Headbutt. Kasiya smirked darkly, as she knew the exact, perfect, and literal counter for such a move. The Meganium held her ground, giving a cry as the Grumpig slammed its head into her chest - the Light Screen would not protect her from that. "Rosemary, Counter!" the blonde called, prompting a narrowing of the eyes from Liza. Rosemary's whole body seemed to glow as she lunged forward, slamming all of her weight into the Grumpig for a powerful, retaliatory strike. It was slow getting back up again, and Kasiya knew it wouldn't take much more to bring it down.

Jake hovered in the doorway of the ruined playroom, watching as Madison poured another cup of tea for her stuffed Teddiursa. If he hadn't already known that something was up with her, he would have assumed her to be a perfectly normal little girl. It wasn't the case though, and she looked up and smiled at him, once again waving him over. "Come on, Jakey!" she called. "Your tea is gonna get cold!" She pointed to the only empty chair at the small table, laid out with a cute cup and saucer and it was quite clear that she was insistent that he join her.

He wasn't sure why, but for a moment, the dark, uneasy feelings he'd been experiencing since he first saw the little girl faded, and he gave her that big-brotherly, 'oh all right, if you really insist' shrug and chuckle before he made his way over. He paused, looking somewhat skeptically at the tiny chair as he wasn't so sure it would hold him and he put down some of his weight, deciding against it as it creaked ominously. He hoped Maddie wouldn't mind as he pushed it aside and instead plopped down on the floor. "So, what kind of tea are we having?" he asked, deciding to humor her.

The little girl seemed confused by his question and looked into her teacup. "Um, the yummy kind," she said matter-of-fact-like and she picked up the little pot and 'poured' some into Jake's cup.

"The best kind," Jake answered, unable to keep from smiling like a big goofball. "Thank you," he added, remembering his manners.

Maddie beamed at him. "Would you like one lump or two?" she asked, eagerly holding up the sugar bowl.

"Hmm..." Jake mulled it over for a moment. "Four!" he said finally. Maddie's eyes widened.

"My mommy says that too much sugar is bad for you," she scolded, but added four lumps of imaginary sugar to Jake's imaginary tea regardless. "But I won't tell." Jake smiled and they both raised their cups. "Oh, it's a fancy tea party, you have to put your pinkie out, like this!" she said, wiggling the tiny digit for Jake to see.

"Oh, naturally," the boy replied amicably, wiggling his own pinkie in return. He felt a stabbing jab in his head then and he closed his eyes, groaning in pain.

When he opened them again, he was seated at a different table, and a familiar woman was looking across at him. "Don't slurp, dear," she told him, her expression warm and loving despite the firmness of her voice. Jake couldn't help but stare at her, taking in her every feature. He knew this woman, didn't he? He wasn't sure, but it felt like he should. Her eyes were a lovely shade of light blue, and her hair was the colour of honey. He leaned forward a little, feeling a flutter in his heart. Mom?

The professor gave a nod, already a little curious as to which Water-type the tall redhead would be adding to his roster. "It's no trouble, Kressen, really," Oak said again, wondering if he'd ever met a trainer that had thanked him that much in one visit. He was only doing his job, after all. "Good luck with your search," he called after the youth. "And please feel free to fill me in on your progress. I look forward to hearing all about your new Water-type."

As soon as her son's anger had turned on her, Maggie Summers stopped in her tracks, and at that moment in time, Keegan was certain he'd never seen his mother look more hurt and upset in his entire life. He felt a pang of guilt as he knew she wasn't the one he was angry with and didn't deserve it, and for a moment he glanced around the gym as it quickly emptied out, save for Flannery. Oddly enough, however, he didn't want her to leave as he felt a little more grounded having at least one friendly face in the room. "Look, Mom, I'm sorry, but I just can't take it anymore. I can't stand him looking at me like... like that, like I'm nothing more than a big disappointment to him. Like, I dunno, he got the short end of the stick in kid department or something. I mean, I know I'm not the perfect son or whatever, and I never will be and I'm sorry for that, I really am. But I'm tired of being under-appreciated and underestimated. I'm tired of everything." He hadn't yet realized it, but he'd started pacing back and forth a little as he spoke.

"We don't expect you to be perfect, honey," his mother said, voice trembling. It seemed as though she wanted to continue, but Mr Summers had stepped forward, placing his hand on his wife's shoulder and she went quiet.

Keegan stopped his pacing and scoffed, looking away from his parents. His arms were crossed tightly over his chest, which felt as though it may burst at any moment. He couldn't put into words how badly he wanted a cigarette right now. "Could've fooled me," he grumbled.

"Of course you're not perfect," Mr Summers said, cutting off any more crass remarks from his already-angry son. "Nobody is. Not me, your mother, or anyone. Now, you look at me when I'm talking to you, son," he said, voice akin to that of a strict army general, and grudgingly yet obediently the younger redhead did as told. "It's no secret that you've managed to piss me off ever since the day you first learned to talk, and yes, sometimes I have gone out of my way to make life hell for you. Do you know why that is?"

"If you say 'love', I'm going to throw up," Keegan muttered with a roll of his eyes.

Todd rolled his eyes right back, but at least he could rest easy knowing the kid came by his attitude honestly. "Seriously, boy, knock off the wisecracks for five minutes."

"I'll make no such promise."

"Keegan," breathed Maggie, her tone pleading. Keegan sighed, and nodded, figuring his best bet was to just get it over with.

"Look at you, Keegan," Todd said, his voice a bit lighter than before. "You've come a long way from the quiet, shy little boy you once were. You're smart and you're tough and you don't take s**t from anyone - not even me now, apparently. I never went easy on you because I knew the world wasn't going to and I wanted you to be strong enough to handle it. And don't you think for one second that we - that I'm not proud of you, because you couldn't be more wrong. And furthermore, if you think I was underestimating you out here today, well, you're wrong about that, too. If you wanna know who was underestimating you, well then, you'd better take a long, hard look in the mirror, boy."
=====
"Snap out of it, Gastly," Damien muttered, having caught the eager look in the redheaded girl's eye. Despite his earlier assessment of her and her horribly disgusting teddy bear, she appeared to know what she was doing on the Pokemon battlefield, at least in the early stages of the match. Fire-type attacks were always dangerous as there was the chance of being afflicted with a burn, but it quickly became apparent that this was not going to be the case as the Vulpix had other ideas and instead landed an impressive Faint Attack on the Ghost-type. Or, it would have been impressive if it had been a Faint Attack the girl had called for in the first place.

"Disobedience?" he said flatly, leveling his gaze at the redhead - and realizing that he still didn't know her name, not that it mattered. "Honestly, which one of you is the Pokemon, and which is the trainer? I'm not entirely sure." His tone was easily condescending, but he appeared not to care as he looked to his own Pokemon, still suffering from confusion. "Gastly, use Hypnosis, if you can manage it." Gastly said nothing and with some effort, managed to drift back up off the floor, albeit looking a bit roughed up. The Gas Pokemon then narrowed his eyes at the Vulpix, sending out waves of hypnotic energy toward the little fox that would hopefully even out the playing field.

It was at that moment that Damien happened to look past the battle, his gaze falling upon a woman standing along the guardrail. Almost instantly a faint, almost buzzing feeling started in his head, and he sighed. The woman turned to look at him, and the moment he made eye contact with her, she smiled. Oh, no, not again, Damien groaned inwardly. Even on a ship out at sea he couldn't seem to get away from them.

Okay, that was not the reaction he was expecting. Usually when people get their own attacks reflected back at them and then taunted they lose their cool in a completely different manner.

"I like you!" Mike said finally, his voice hoarse. It was nice to see a kid so young with chops like that. It was nice to see that he wasn't just a Gym Leader by default. These two earned it. "But you're right. You're right." He had been too dramatic and focused on doing something neat and flashy. Sometimes that worked, but not when he was battling with someone, especially Kasiya, for something as important as a gym badge. If they lost because of him, he would feel like a complete jackass. Mike turned to Kasiya. "My dear, I've been awfully selfish in this battle and I'm sorry. Please allow me to help you now." He reached down and removed the Ultra Ball marked with a scratchy 'X' from his strap. "It's time for a bit more of a practical approach!" In a flash of white light, so appeared Xanthos, the temperamental and downright psychotic Crawduant. Wasting no time getting into character, the lobster let out a hiss, turning back to face his trainer, wondering why he was being bothered. Mike merely crossed his arms.

"You going to be pissy, or do you want to wreck something?" Xanthos was completely taken off guard by the choice before him. Was he looking at the same kid? Figuring that letting the Crawduant get too existential might hurt more than help, Mike snapped back into the fight. "Let's try out that new move you have. Night Slash the Grumpig, let's help Kassie out!" She'd been so sweet to help him out, it was time to return the favor. Xanthos never needed to be told twice to go ruin someone's day, and with bloodthirsty purpose, the Crawduant took off. He lumbered towards Liza's Pokemon, his eyes already narrowed as he built up all of the rage constantly boiling inside of him.

This wasn't good, Tate thought. Crawduant were a rare sight in the gym due to their highly aggressive nature. But if a trainer managed to harness that power, there was going to be little that either of them could do about it. "Solrock!" He cried out, looking over at Liza's clearly hurt Grumpig. "Rock Slide! Stop him!" The Meteorite Pokemon spun in place, giving off a bright light and throwing a spread of rocks towards Xanthos and Rosemary, but that did little more than piss him off more. Xanthos took the hits and picked up speed. He even managed to bat one of them back at the attacking Pokemon, even if it didn't do much to hurt him. By the time he made it to the wounded Grunpig, he had enough anger to flip a bus, and brought all of that down on his opponent with both of his spiny pincers.

Kasiya looked from Rosemary to Mike, accepting his apology with a bit of a shrug and a kind smile. He didn't have to apologize, not really, as by now she was quite accustomed to his flashy and sometimes over-the-top style, and honestly, it would be more than a little weird to see him act otherwise. She was enjoying this gym battle, and it felt really good to be doing normal trainer stuff again. She couldn't help but shiver a bit upon seeing Xanthos, however, as her memories of battling Riza's Crawdaunt were still fresh in her mind. Granted, the sudden appearances of all those eggs had left it unfinished and she made a mental note to change that someday, but even still, she was quite certain that she would never grow to love the Crawdaunt species.

Liza was no happier to see the Crawdaunt appear on the field than her brother, and she knew that once the lobster got its claws into her Grumpig, it would be over for it. Time for one last hurrah, she thought, grinning at Tate's attempt to slow Xanthos down with a Rock Slide. Her brother's Solrock was certainly reliable. "Psychic!" she called quickly, pointing at the annoyingly-sturdy Meganium while the Water/Dark-type was fighting his way through the rocks. The Manipulate Pokemon unleashed one final blast of psychic energy before Xanthos' claws got hold of it, and Liza could only grin as she recalled her fallen Pokemon. So she and Tate were down to their signature Pokemon now? It didn't matter; she wasn't giving up, and she knew Tate wasn't going to, either.

Kasiya was amazed at just how much punishment Rosemary could take, not only from the flying rocks from Tate's Solrock but also the Psychic attack from the now-fallen Grumpig. She winced under the warm sun, deciding to take advantage of the Sunny Day before it faded. "Rosemary! It's time to use Synthesis!" she called, and the Meganium didn't need to be told a second time as her flowery mane began to shimmer with a healthy, rosy glow as she absorbed the sun's rays, her health replenishing. Kasiya glanced up at Mike, and then to Tate and Liza again as the psychic sister had let out her final Pokemon as well, a moon-shaped Pokemon that seemed to match up well with Tate's Solrock.

By now, Liza was really starting to get fed up with this girl's Meganium, and she looked to her signature Lunatone. "Ice Beam!" she shouted, pointing at the Herb Pokemon. The crescent-shaped Psychic-type began to spin in place, a pale blue glow encompassing its body before it stopped and fired a thin, frigid ray of ice at the Grass-type.

Rosemary was by no means an overly agile creature and she could only cry out in pain as the super-effective attack slammed into her. The few ice crystals that dared form on her body were quickly melted away by the sunshine, but that would soon fade away. Kasiya narrowed her eyes, but smiled at the twin gym leaders as she reached for Mike's hand. It was time to show the siblings that there were more than just psychic bonds between people!

Xanthos let out a shrill hiss as he pummeled the unresponsive Grumpig further into submission. Weak! Pathetic! This was the fight he was promised? This was nothing. His claws left two big dents in the floor when he went in for one more strike and hit nothing but floor as Grumpig was recalled out from underneath him. Unsatisfied, the Crawduant ran back over to his position, glaring at just about everyone, even his own battle partner as she took in the sunlight to heal her wounds.

Mike smirked as he saw Rosemary's very effective recovery. He knew just about everything there was on Fire Pokemon, but it always surprised him how well Grass types paired up with them. Soon he would have to do some studying on how to better synergize his team around his beloved Fire Pokemon. Speaking of beloved, Mike tilted his head at Kasiya suddenly holding her hand out in the middle of a fight. Not that he minded, he just wasn't sure what she wa-ohhhh. Okay. Right. Love. Sometimes it took him a few seconds to catch up, especially in battles, but he got it. Smiling, Mike gladly placed his hand in hers, gently rubbing his thumb on the side of her pointer finger. "Let's show these kids what a real connection is." It would probably shoot straight over their heads, as he was sure at Tate's age he still thought girls had cooties.

Even though they were on their last Pokemon, the sight of his sister's Lunatone floating next to his Solrock made Tate just a bit more at ease. Nevertheless, he and his sister were in a bit of a pickle. They had yet to knock down Kasiya's first Pokemon, but both he and Liza knew the second they stopped paying attention to the Crawduant it would come down on either one of their Pokemon and just ruin their collective day. Not to mention, Solrock and Lunatone's rock type made the Meganium just as much of a threat. He looked at his sister and nodded. One last turn for sunshine, he thought. Let's see how this kid likes a taste of his own medicine. I'll take the lobster this turn, then if the Meganium is still standing, we gang up on it. "Thank you for the lovely weather." Tate sneered. "Solrock, Solarbeam!" In the most fitting display possible for any Pokemon, the sun-shaped rock fired a sun-powered beam out of his sun-shaped face strengthened by the sun-shaped...sun. The alliterative attack (you can't stop me) ripped right through the sizzling sky, soaring straight for the capricious Crawduant.

"Well, s**t." Mike said very matter-of-factly, sucking in the right side of his mouth. Xanthos was pretty much toast. At least he would be if he didn't have one particular move. "Just kidding! Dig!" Xanthos was practically mid dive when his trainer gave the order, showing he was in no mood to get cooked today. The Crawduant hit the ground swinging, burrowing under the arena just in time for the Solarbeam to whiz right above him and fizzle out harmlessly in the air. Tate's frown nearly hit the floor, and Mike would have been lying if he said he wasn't happy to be smirking like a total jackass after foiling what his opponent probably assumed would have been the most ironic knockout ever. He was flashy, sure, but not stupid. After the missed attack, the sun eased up, and everyone felt a little less stuffy. Mike, however, thought it got a bit chilly, to be honest.

"Alright babe, you do your thing." Mike said, giving his girlfriend's hand a light squeeze.

Being really the only civilization between Pewter City and Cerulean City with a big honking mountain in the way, this particular pokecenter was outfitted quite well for traveling trainers. There indeed was a cafeteria and they were in the late stages of serving dinner. It was fairly empty and Riza and Ian had plenty of room to let out their Pokemon so that they could have a good meal as well. Aside from his Chimchar Ian had a party of interesting Pokemon including a Donphan, a Seel, a Miltank, a Hypno and also a large, imposing creature that was called Torterra. Torterra only fit inside if it crouched down onto its belly, but all the smaller Pokemon definitely loved the large tree on its back.

Riza hadn't changed her mind about staying the night though, much to Ian's disappointment and they exchanged phone numbers before the nice young man headed off again. He was more the outdoorsy type anyway and was probably a lot more comfortable sleeping outside under the stars. Riza on the other hand liked a roof over her head and a soft bed beneath her, and though it was still a tiny bit early she decided to turn in for the night. She wanted to get some more training in, but that could wait until tomorrow.

The long trek through the mountain had exhausted her and Riza slept rather peacefully, waking up at a decent hour the next morning as she'd set the alarm on her phone. She had a lengthy and generous shower, carefully scrubbing every inch of her skin until the grungy feeling had finally gone away. Feeling refreshed and clean she dried, dressed and carefully combed her hair, managing to complete her morning routine in a timely fashion. From then on it was breakfast and she headed outside to find that it was a rather lovely day. 'Okay, time for some training,' she thought, heading away from the pokecenter to find a decent spot.

Katie would not have to wait long for someone to realize she was there and before long a middle aged woman stepped out from the back to greet her. "Why hello there, young lady! How can I help you this fine morning?"

Something interesting happened then as Katie smiled kindly at the woman. Her nervousness all but vanished and she leaned on the counter, easily making eye contact. "I'm just looking for a place to let my Roselia stay for a few days," she said, gesturing to the grass-type at her side. "This is a breeding center right?"

The woman nodded. "Yes, it is. We also have daycare services," she added, looking over at Seraphim. "Why hello there! Aren't you a cutie!" Seraphim totally played it up as well, doing a little twirl and a curtsy to introduce herself. "If you're interested I can give you and this lovely little one a tour!"

"That would be fantastic," the orange haired girl said, grinning at her Roselia as the kind woman began to show them around. 'This just might work,' the young wannabe-rocket thought with a smile.

"Thanks professor. I'll be sure to drop by to show him or her off to you if I manage to catch one. I imagine it might be a bit difficult to do without a lot of experience in dealing with water pokemon." Sure he had fished before, but all he had caught was magikarp and lets face those weren't really hard to catch.

Meanwhile!

It was just around this time two rocket grunts Bob and Steve ,cause lets face it grunts don't have cool names like Giovanni or N, where attempting to make a big run up the criminal ladder in one fell swoop. And what easier way than by swiping some pokemon and tech from the famed professor Oaks laboratory? None that's what!

It had been easy enough to sneak behind the lab since no one would suspect such a daring plan. The only pokemon in sight was a metapod clinging to the side of the building as it waited for its evolution. Ignoring the bug type the went about setting some small explosives to blast open the wall to the ball storage. The plan was to get in quickly scoop the pokeballs into a bag and cheese out of there like bandits.

Of course planning something and doing it where two entirely different things. Plus twiddle dee and twiddle dum didn't go to class much so they short of miscalculated on the amount of gunpower needed to silently ope the side door to the ball storage room. It instead blew it completely off its hinges and made an explosion loud enough to send bird types flying into the sky a mile around. The poor metapod fell off the building it was so startled and used harden as it fell to the ground to migitate the damage it would take.

Kressen jumped at the noise and looked towards a bit of smoke rising from the back of the lab. "Is it safe to assume that's not normal?'

It was fairly safe to say that Kasiya's confidence was currently soaring, as her daring rescue of her darling Raichu had contributed to that, and now she and her beloved were busy ravaging a second gym, but at least this one was in a good way. Rosemary was wary of this teammate as well but with good reason, as even though she held a type advantage over him, Kasiya would never count the brute of a Crawdaunt out. Tate seemed pretty pleased with himself, calling for Solrock to use a Solarbeam as well and Kasiya realized she shouldn't be surprised as the damn thing even looked like a sun. Kasiya remembered that Xanthos could use Protect (Riza's Crawdaunt could, too) and she almost expected Mike to call for that, though watching the lobster burrow safely underground worked just as well. Kasiya's excited giggle may have been indicative that she was spending too much time around Mike as she looked to her Meganium. "Razor Leaf," she called gleefully, as it was a wide-spread attack that would slice and dice both opponents. Still feeling a bit of a chill from the Ice Beam (and also because the warm sun had gone away), Rosemary gave a cry and sent another volley of the dangerous leaves at the Solrock and Lunatone.

Oh, that Meganium has got to go, Liza thought irritably, though her tight-lipped smile never wavered. And I've got just the thing for it, too! Lunatone, knock it out with your Hypnosis. The dark-haired gym leader smiled at her brother. They were still in this, even if the Crawdaunt had escaped harm - for now - and their Pokemon had been assaulted by another barrage of super-effective Razor Leaves. The Meteorite Pokemon's creepy red eye began to pulsate as it stared Rosemary down, and like clockwork, the Meganium's antennae began to droop. In no time at all, the Grass-type had fallen to the gym's floor, sound asleep.

The pale-haired woman smiled back at Jake, and gave a slow nod. "Yes, Jaeshan, it's me," she said warmly, reaching out a soft hand to touch his cheek. Jake leaned forward expectantly, extending his own hand to meet hers but instead her hand passed right through him, sending a sharp, painful chill all throughout his body. It jolted him back to the present and he cried out, looking around the room. "M-mom," he mumbled, pressing his palm against his temple as though it would stop the pain, and after a few moments, it actually did. He sighed and opened his eyes, remembering his company. "Hey Maddie, I'd love a refill..." he started, but to his surprise, the playroom was a playroom no more - it was completely empty, save for the bookshelf in the corner.

Frowning, Jake got to his feet. He wasn't all that surprised by the fact that the girl was gone, as he was already certain there was something weird going on here. He walked over to the bookcase, which was in worse condition than it was initially. He didn't see anything of interest, as there was nothing more than a few musty children's book and thick layers of dust. He smirked as he picked up the top one, brushing off the dust to look at the cover. It was a copy of 'The Very Hungry Caterpie' and he flipped through it, amazed at how intact some of the inner pages were. He moved to close the book when a loose sheet caught his attention, but upon closer inspection, he found it wasn't a loose page but in fact a photograph that someone had put into the book, presumably for safekeeping. He wasn't at all surprised by the subjects in the photo, as it was none other than little Madison, plush Teddiursa and all, and what looked to be her parents. The photo was from years ago, as the little stuffed bear looked much newer and less ragged and he sighed, tucking it back into the book. He didn't put it back on the shelf though, instead removing his beat-up pack from his back and sliding the book inside. He wasn't sure why he wanted to keep it, but he was starting to feel a sort of attachment to the girl, even if he had figured out that she was most likely a ghost or spirit or something by now.

"Toooooom!" came a shrill cry from the doorway, once again jolting Jake out of his thoughts and he spun around to see the exact Pokemon that Madison described earlier staring at him.

"Sparky!" the blonde boy cried, prompting a happy buzz from the creature, and he pulled out his PokeDex to scan the thing until he remembered that it was dead. "Oh, right," he muttered, giving a defeated sigh. The Pokemon made a laughing noise and began to drift away, prompting Jake to give chase. "Hey, wait!" he called, immediately running after it. His footfalls weren't exactly graceful and he'd gotten to the middle of the room when he heard an ominous creaking below him. He didn't get a chance to even react as the ground was falling out from under him and he went crashing down through the floor and into the room below.

The redhead stared back across the small battlefield at the dark-haired boy, blinking slowly. Now Karrigan had initially thought that Riza girl back in Vermilion City was kind of rude, but this kid certainly took top prize now. Sure, Amber hadn't obeyed her, but it wasn't the first time her Pokemon used a newly-leaned move in place of her command. Figuring that the boy was only trying to get to her, she said nothing, deciding that he wasn't worth wasting energy on. Instead, she looked to Amber as the Ghost-type attempted to put her to sleep with Hypnosis. "Dodge!" she called, the urgency in her voice more than enough to stir the Vulpix into action. The fox easily darted to safety, casting the Gastly's trainer a nasty glare. She didn't like the way he was speaking to Karrigan; only she was allowed to be judgey like that! Amber gave a bark and pawed the floor, all six of her tails twitching in anticipation. She would not be sorry if her next Ember attack "missed" the Gastly and hit that obnoxious boy by "accident" instead!

"Perhaps you'd be better off sticking to Pokemon on the beach, unless you have a fishing rod," Oak suggested good-naturedly, though he didn't at all doubt Kressen's ability to capture one of them. The Water-types around here were all fairly used to trainers and generally it was pretty easy to lure them to you if you were generous with your food.

Oak made a slight face at the unmistakable rumble in his stomach and he wagered it was time for a morning snack, and he was almost licking his lips in anticipation of some toast smeared with delicious honey when an explosion from the back of the lab rattled all of the windows. Rather than panic, Professor Oak raised an eyebrow. "Normal? Dear me, I should say not," he said, shaking his head. "Especially considering that none of the Voltorb are out in the yard today." Suspicious explosions usually only meant one thing, and the professor narrowed his eyes. "Shall we investigate?" he asked, though it was more of a statement than a question as he turned and headed back into his home/laboratory, hopefully with a helpful redhead on his heels.
