Jackal stood up directly into the line of fire, bringing his LMG to bare. He unleashed a lengthy volley of fire, the constant barrage of bullets only broken up as he interchanged between targets.
His sadistic, maniacal laughter joined the choir of blood-curdling screams that resounded through the night air as he dropped back behind cover, his laughter muting to a dark chuckle as he ejected the magazine from his gun.
Fumbling through his parka for another clip, he became acutely aware that the girl next to him was talking. It irritated him. He had come for money, not a friend.
He snarled and grabbed the young girl by the scruff of the neck, his cold blue eyes piercing into hers. His grip on her collar tightened and he gritted his teeth.
"Listen Angie... I'm not sure exactly what you're doing here, but you'd bet get out of here. Now. I don't want your help, and on top of that, I don't need your help. And I especially don't want a friend. Got it?" He released her roughly, pushing her backwards. His eyes remained locked on hers as he reached inside his parka and pulled his hefty magnum from its concealed holster, thumbing the hammer back slowly and resting his index finger on the trigger...

Zed watched the desert dust on one of the monitors for a while before noticing a small light flash up on the dash. He leant over it and had a good long stare at the warning light in order to determine what it was supposed to indicate.

"Looks like a distress beacon... I'll check it out after dropping you off at the city... How you doing back there Ilyse?"

The pilot looked over his shoulder at the young woman, who had been silent for a minute or so now.

After Koko had gone a few steps she stopped, a strong feeling of guilt washing over her. She remembered how Jackal had said he'd kill Angie if she didn't leave - which she probably hadn't - & the mercenary knew this wasn't an idle threat. Turning back slowly she listened to the raider's laughter as it carried across the still night air. The girl clenched her jaw & frowned, before yelling,
"God dammit!"
She sprinted back towards the gunfight, her immense speed getting her there within seconds. In that time she also retrieved her gun from where it had been on her back. When she got to the top of the dune she quickly surveyed the scene, locating Jackal as he grabbed Angie. It was at this moment that the gunman realised where she was up on the sand dune. The mercenary flinched a little as a bullet struck her on the cheek & immediately dropped to the ground to make herself less of a target.

Within a couple of seconds a further volley of shots began, churning up the sand all around her & causing a section just in front of her to collapse, the fine desert sand sliding easily. The girl knew she had no cover here so, when more shots rang out she gripped her gun & rolled down the dune, feeling a bullet graze her back as she did so.

About half-way down Koko managed to stumble to her feet & half run, half stagger down the dune. With her trench coat swirling around her, the mercenary sped across the sand towards cover, listening to the sounds of gunfire around her. Using her speed to help her, Koko dove behind cover, slamming her back against it & leaning her gun against her shoulder. She turned to Jackal, half smirking.
"Well hey there doggie. Seems like I only say ya yesterday, pissed off someone else I see. Oh & you've met Angie."
She narrowed her eyes at the girl in question, anger bubbling to the surface.
"You little missy, need to learn when people don't bloody want your help! Especially when they're pointin' a damn gun at ya!"
Despite obviously being able to at this point, the mercenary didn't move to help the girl; she wanted to teach her a lesson, but if Jackal was going to shoot her to kill, she'd have to step in.

Angie started to talk, but swiftly found that her windpipe was being pressed on by Jackal's grip. She was terrified, but held in her fear for now. She was finally released, and despite the gun aimed at her, Angie said "I am not here to be your friend. And, I don't know you, so how was I to know that you did not need help?" The young girl was now frowning, and, as she had no idea who she was dealing with, she gently pressed her fingers to the top of the gun, and ushered it downwards, away from pointing at her.

"Koko!" she greeted when the girl appeared, but soon shut up when she was scowled at. 'Dammit! No-one appreciates a little help round here! I just lightened that guy's workload!' she thought to herself. Fed up, and extremely irritated at the thought that these people underestimated her by a lot, Angie rose to her feet. In response, several shots were fired, to which Angie turned to aim her gun at the shooter, and fired two bullets - one into his thigh and then one into the nook between his neck and shoulder. The man grumbled before dropping to the floor.

Angie then hid the gun away under her cloak, and climbed her way up and over the collapsed dune where Koko had arrived. The girl then took to a painful jog over the sands, aiming to find a city or at least someone to find her company wanted. Angie sighed to herself and felt her body weakening, but the blood flow was easing off. Despite this she slowed to a walk, now not an excited admirer, but an angered little *itch...but still a Koko admirer all the same.

Ilyse's silence had been caused by the thrill of flight. She, like most born on Ares, had lived on the land for the entirety of her fledgling life, and the sight of a bird was rare, never mind such an elegant craft as was gliding through the air as she stood motionless, her mouth wide open, at what was previously unimaginable was very much a firm reality. As Zed's crisp words cut through the suffocating, but entirely mesmeric, lull she found herself in, as she saw the sky blurring, clouds whispering past like fleeting moments, Ilyse's mouth rearranged itself into an irresistible smile, an expression of undoubtable pleasure, yet somehow vacant, as if part of her had become a bird, and taken to the sky itself, wind whistling against her features. cool and brisk, but immeasurably pleasurable.

However, as the dialogue of the pilot danced around her ears, Ilyse's mind was brought back into some state of reality, a muffled "Ah" leaving her lips, leading to a moment of realisation, followed by one of quick composition. The young, self-professed invetor shook her head in what was almost an attempt to wake from a dream-like state. Realising Zed's words at last, she found the necessary logic to construct a response. "Oh yeah. This is fantastic!" She wasn't particularly worried about sounding too eager. She never was. But this time, more than any other, she had found a place in which she could float forever, and ever... and ever...

Zed watched the sleeper-ship that shaded the city below it from the bright light that had been thrown out by billions of billions of stars billions and billions years ago.

The starlight illuminated the desert, much like the light reflected from the Earth's moon would have done. The pilot remembered the view of the Earth's moon, it was 5 years from impact when he saw it last, when the close-up moon took up a large chunk of the sky.
He shook away his thoughts of home and watched the sleeper-ship grow on the horizon, eventually filling the view from the front windscreen with it's huge mass.

"Well, here we are, Ares city."

Thane tilted his head slightly and poked Lance in the shoulder. When his mentor didn't wake up, Thane frowned a little.
Hooking his arms around Lance, Thane slowly dragged the now only slightly taller man out of the chryo-pod.
"Mr. Volos? Hey wake up!"
Lance didn't say anything mainly because he hadn't woken up yet. Thane turned his head to look at Syu and gave a small smile when he noticed that the younger man had his revolver out.
"You don't need that out. He won't hurt us...well at least I hope he won't."
He then turned his attention back to dragging Lance over to a wall, so that he could rest him against it and to figure out how to get his unconscious friend out of the ship.

Ilyse had obviously seen it from the view of its shadow, and from a distance, but something about viewing the sleeper ship from such a stage caught its mighty, metal majesty in an entirely new way, at least to her eyes. It hung over an urban sprawl, casting an unimaginably large shadow, like the mouth of some great beast, lazily waiting to collapse on its prey. From underneath it, one could see a multitude of once stable mechanical equipment, now splintered from an impact which had long become some crazy lore, parts even now occasionally dropping into the city below, results of erosion. Yes, from underneath it, any city dweller would find it difficult to believe it had ever found itself suspended in any air whatsoever. However, as Ilyse viewed its entire construct, her eyes traced every aerodynamic contour which lay upon its aged hull. She was amazed that she hadn't realized it before. Every inch of this mountain of metal was as born for the skies as a bird - or even the wonderful craft she found herself in.

This thought allowed Ilyse a moment's respite from the breathtaking visage which had obscured her mind for the last few minutes, giving her an oppourtunity to thank the odd, but unmistakably charismatic pilot, who had made this entirely possible. Her head still peeking around the pilot's seat, a mere twist of the neck allowed her view of Zed's face. "Thanks Mr Zed! I mean, not just for getting me here, but flying... the Aiolos... I mean, wow. So yeah, thanks a whole bunch!" With her last line, Ilyse turned away from the seat, and spread her arms out, fingers spread just as wide, in order to show just how big a bunch her words had meant. Her mind flickered on to another subject. "Oh, and yeah! Can I catch a ride back with you too? I mean, I shouldn't be long, and.... this ship!"

Her eyes shone with an anxious excitement, and looked at the pilot with decided anticipation.

Dimitri watched Thane move the new man, and stood beside the pair as the lad rested his mentor against the wall. "We gonna carry 'im?" Dimitri asked, dropping lightly to a crouch. The long haired male studied Lance for a while, before asking gently, "'E is...alive...righ'?"

Zed smiled broadly as he tapped a few more buttons.
"Possibly. I'm a very busy man y'know"
The Aiolos slowed and made an approach to land near the outer wall of the huge city beneath the vast sleeper ship. Several 'Merc-wars' era bomber ships that had been stripped down and turned into passenger craft were ferrying passengers to and from the other large cities on the planet. There were several smaller fighter class ships that belonged to the city's security forces flying patrol patterns around the city skyline.

The ship's landing gear made a satisfying hissing noise as it contacted the ground, the metal feet and boarding ramp partially burying themselves in the dust.
The pilot turned his attention from landing the ship back to Ilyse.
"Right, I'll seeya around sometime, just set off some fireworks or something if you need me. I'll be around."
He saluted the young woman then turned back to the monitor that was displaying a radar image.

Ilyse thanked her escort excitedly again, and soon found herself stepping under the mighty shadow of the ship which stood eternally, protecting the city and denizens which existed under it from the sun's searing rays. Although the air was humid to the touch, it was undeniably refreshing, and despite being much less thrilling than what had been an incredibly exhilarating experience, a different type of expectation now stirred the fire in the young inventor's belly. She was going to see her parents, for what must have been the first time in years. She had enjoyed the constant exchange of letters that they had kept up, but nothing would quite match that parental embrace she so desired. Her plan was of action had already been determined: she'd give the two of them a big hug, then scold them for not having returned to a letter for the last couple of months. They had worried her! Any doubt in her mind was quenched by anticipation, as she began to make her way to her childhood home.

Thane grimaced. It wasn't going to be easy to carry Lance out of here but then they couldn't just stay here.
"'E is...alive...righ'?"
He looked over at Dimitri and then at Lance with worry. Could that happen? It couldn't....could it? Thane crouched down next to his mentor and checked his pulse.
"Yes, yes he is."
He wasn't quite sure why he was so worried, he just wanted to get out of here now. He was tired and the ship was creaking loudly in the silence.
"Right....uhm...can you help me pick him up?"

Within seconds of Ilyse's departure, the landing gear and access ramps ascended into the ship's sleek hull, before the Aiolos disappeared off into the distance in the blink of an eye.

The pilot felt as if he had an itch on his metal arm, the flesh and bone of which he'd lost a while ago. He touched the metallic wrist with his remaining hand, the lack of feeling was an eerie reminder of the fate he could of suffered. It was a 'one of us will have to stay and die' situation, but he found an alternative. A very painful one, but definitely preferable to death.

Zed moved the metal fingers that had been wired to his motor neurons by Koko, so that they would respond just like in a normal hand.

He touched his fingertip on one of the many screens in the dimly lit cockpit, summoning a menu system which was used to determine what the monitor in question was to display.
He selected the 'Area scan' option, which sent a signal to one of several orbital imaging satellites that had been sent into space a few hundred years ago.

A couple of seconds passed before an image of the surrounding area appeared on-screen. Zed flicked through some options and set the radar systems to scan a huge area around the ship, using the image and to help him navigate the vast desert.

He missed Koko's company, but knew she needed some time to herself, so he figured he'd keep an eye on her, just in case she got into some kind of trouble.

The air temperature was now dropping below zero in the coldest parts of the night.

Syu carefully continued aiming his gun straight towards Lance's head. He still didn't trust anyone, even if they were friends to that of an acquaintance.
"...He might be.." He struggled speaking, he thought it might upset Thane, he seemed to be the type to be upset easily. Syuzanna sturned him self up before briskly speaking again.
"He might have gone insane, there were some really nutcases in here when I woke up. A F**king load of them woke just after me, all the same."

Dimitri scowled at the sound of Syu's tone, and decided he didn't like it one bit. Bristling, he moved to be sat next to Lance, a hand stabilising the man by being on his shoulder. "You alri' Thane?" Dimitri asked, moving to stand up now.

Behind Dimitri and the other trio of men, a low snarl erupted through the near silence. Dimitri swung his head to face it, his hand instantly flying to the chain in his pocket. It was his primary weapon - and a deadly one at that.

The single snarl turned into a chorus of snarls, which in turn caused the darkness to start shifting and creeping closer, every now and then a sheen reflecting from the shadows. The snarls lowered into growls and a rare bark that was choked somewhat, like a dog when his leash is pulled. Dimtri pulled out his chain and lashed in beside him, hearing the links clunk to the floor.

A single shape advanced, making it's pearly white rows of teeth clearly visible. The thing was ... alien! Dimitri was scared of normal earth dogs, but this was a whole new thing. The deep pink gums held a layer of toxic saliva as the creature snapped. Dimitri figured out what it was now, seeing the skinny, starving body.

Dimitri had seen bodies scattered around, having been wandering around for 10 hours before he found Thane and Syu, and now that he'd met these dog like creatures, he knew these must be the cause. Dimitri quivered, but he held strong and flicked his chain forwards, only to find that the skankie reacted quicker and snapped at the chain.

Dimitri then saw the rest of the pack advance from the shadows of the ship. The first must be some kind of leader he guessed.

Dimitri span and lashed the chain over his body and behind him, then flung it the other way. It merely scratched the black skin of the front one, who in turn released a sharp metallic screech and snapped at Dimitri. It's teeth penetrated the skin, the toxic saliva dribbling into the wounds and man did it burn!

The male staggered backwards, clutching at his hand. The creature pulled back, his throat emitting strange, weird sounds that he just couldnt place. Dimitri's eyes widened as he looked down at his bleeding limb to see a thin red line advancing up his palm. The wounds were just below the finger joints, almost touching the bone. Dimitri yelled out as the canine like creatures closed in on the four males.

They should be able to protect themselves...right?
I mean, they are full grown men.

Dimitri yelled again, both from pain and seeing the line of what he could only guess was some kind of fatal poison move closer to his wrist. He knew what he had to do...he just had to find something sharp.

Dimitri walked over to the nearest empty cryo pod, keeping an eye on the Skankhounds, and smashed his foot down, shattering it into sharp shards. Another hound growled and leapt from the pod, cornering Dimitri up against it.

He didnt have time for this! He had to get that hand off!!
