hey, i've been watching that anime, Ghost In The Shell, and those Tachikoma are getting me to understand better how people can sympathize for AI.... plus, i'm kind of opening up to the idea myself... i never thought before of the possibility of AI developing selflessness... or for them to have no other major goal than to understand what itis like to be alive and have a ghost...

wink So far, the closest we got is the talking head in the Hanson Project that can hold up conversations that it has been "taught". Much like a Furby in my opinion, except more money was spent on it and perhaps a more complex system.
Crack has a list of real life robots that come close to having some AI.

Anywho, watch Animatrix if you enjoy the whole concept of AIs and the question of purpose. Even if you don't like the Matrix, the mythos behind the creation of their world and how the robots rose to power is quite fascinating. I believe if machines did become sentient, how their world ended up like is the path we would truly follow
