"I liked them," Toby said as he lingered in the kitchen, putting dinner onto serving dishes and into bowls. "I liked how open they were."
Dari nodded as he laid out napkins ahead of Maia. "I did like them. I can't say they're precisely to my taste,but they're certainly not bad."
"We could be right near each other without sharing walls, though," Toby said.
"That is a plus."

"I liked that too," Maia agreed, and gave Toby a smile when she entered the kitchen. "The kitchen was a good size."
"We can make them better," Cody said, and set out flatware. "She said once we own it, it's ours to do what we like to, didn't she?" The white was awful. "What color would you like it, love?"

"That all depends on neighborhood rules and stipulations," Toby said, "It should be that way, but it isn't always. There's usually a couple of old people with sticks up their asses about how everything looks."
Dari listened to Toby and then turned to Cody and shrugged. "I don't know. If it was our home, I don't think color would matter too much." Then back to Toby: "Do you think we could intimidate them into letting it slide with our profession?"
Toby paused. "...probably."

"We can always ask," Maia said. Too many rules, and they'd probably want to find elsewhere. "We could put in an offer."
"You're about as intimidating as a marshmallow," Cody teased, poking Dari in the side. "I haven't seen your copface yet."

"He has a good one," Toby said.
Dari's expression fell and his eyes hardened a bit to demonstrate this fact. He watched Cody closely. "We could put in an offer," he said, voice cold.
"We could," Toby agreed casually, "That's a big deal, though. We don't know how many people are gunning for them, but if you get it you get it."

Cody was so surprised he took a step back. "That is a good one," he agreed, with a laugh. "You lose all your cute with that look! You'll have to teach me. Do you want to put in an offer?" He couldn't tell when Dari was using that voice!
"If we don't get it, we'll find somewhere better," Maia promised, and kissed Toby's cheek.

Dari smiled again. It took no effort now, not that he'd had to think very much about smiling in his natural form any more. After you'd done it enough times it simply became reflex.
"I have to." He turned to Toby then. "What do you say?"
"Well, you guys could always offer. We don't have to be in the same neighborhood."
"I thought that was the plan?"
Toby just shrugged.

Cody kissed Dari's cheek. "You look better when you smile," he said.
"What?" Maia was surprised. She looked to Toby. "We could keep looking?" Maybe putting in an offer so soon was a bad idea?
"Apartments are so much easier," Cody murmured.

"I just think we should sleep on it," Toby said. "I don't want to just jump in. It's a big deal."
"All we'll be doing is moving our stuff into a new space," Dari said. "Does the house itself really matter? We know they're in good shape. They're brand-new." But he knew the truth. It wasn't their house. Toby had lived in this house longer than Dari had been conscious.

Maia nodded in understanding, taking Toby's hand." "Alright," she agreed. "Do you want some tea?"
Cody looked to Dari. "I've never done this sort of thing," he admitted. An apartment was entirely different, and before that he'd been in a dorm.

Toby paused. "...sure."
Dinner came out and was set around the table.
"I haven't either," Dari said. He had done his research, but that wasn't really the same thing as experience. There was only so much you could learn from articles and testimonials. "We'll learn together."

A few days later, Maia and Toby were seated on the couch. Dari was at Cody's--maybe painting? Maybe going up to their picnic spot? She hadn't given him the most attention.
She looked to Toby. "Have you thought about the house?" She asked. She reached for his hand. It'd be hard. But they'd be together, and close to Dari! That was important. "Do you want to put in an offer?"

Toby didn't offer his hand at first. There was hesitation before he held it out for Maia to take. He didn't like this line of conversation, but he wasn't sure why. Finding a new house was important if they were looking to find a family.
"I've thought about it a lot," he said, "and I still don't know."

"We could look at other houses," Maia offered. She hesitated, and gave his hand a squeeze. "I'm going to miss this house, too." They'd made so many memories here in the short time she'd lived here. And Toby had been here so long, longer than Dari had been alive.

Toby didn't really want to look at more houses. He thought he knew what he wanted to do but wasn't sure why it scared him so much. Maybe Maia was right, though. Maybe it was the house. He leaned back against the couch and sighed, staring up at the ceiling.
"It's not big enough for a baby, though. We'd have to kick Dari out, and who knows where he'd end up?"
