"As long as we get lost together, it won't be so bad," Maia said, giving him a smile. "We'll find our way back, tracking or not." She leaned up to kiss his cheek. "We could go to dinner later," she suggested. "What're you feeling?"

House-hunting was hard. Toby had come to accept the notion that he and Dari were no longer going to be roommates, but he wasn't willing to see the guy move several towns away. That made things hard. How in the world were they going to find two separate houses when finding one was so hard?
"I mean, we don't know how many bedrooms we want... two at least? But I mena if we're going to have a baby some day..."
"It's better to buy too many than too few," Dari responded.

Maia entered the room with a plate of cookies. She set it on the table and sat beside Toby. "We could go for three or four rooms," she suggested. "That way, we'd have a room for guests, and another if we needed it." Storage, a second baby, an office. Whatever they wanted.
Maybe they'd find two houses close together. She didn't want to be too far away from Dari. "Do you want to look online?" She asked.

Toby inhaled and blew air out through puffed lips. This was terribly stressful.
"What's aside from bedrooms? Kitchen, dining room, living room... that's about it, right?"
"Usually," Dari responded. He tapped a search into his own laptop as the partners sat beside each other at the table. "How old are we looking?"
"About thirty-two."
"You know what I mean."
"I don't really care, as long as it's not falling apart."

"A big kitchen would be nice," Maia mused, and looked towards Dari. Would a newer house be better, or an older house? Older houses needed repairs more often, didn't they? Windows would be nice too, large ones. And a backyard! That was definitely on the list. She hadn't realized she'd had one, until she'd thought about it.
"We could go looking," she offered. "Maybe there's a couple open houses."

"I wouldn't really know where to start," Toby said.
Just then Dari leaned back in his chair and folded his hands over his belly. His eyes rolled up to the ceiling and flicked almost imperceptibly back and forth. He was remembering.
"There is one for-sale within 2 miles, three more within 5, and 7 within ten. That's what I've seen anyway." His eyes came back to Toby and Maia. "I wish there was a better way to look."
"Maybe we can go on a drive one day. A mini road trip." Toby took a cookie and leaned back, watching his computer as if it might offer him information on its own.

Dari knew that already? Maybe they'd have to go out and look at them in person. Pictures could be deceiving, or not do the property justice. "We could do that," she agreed. "Stop and have lunch, too. Maybe this weekend?" She looked to Dari. "If you don't have anything planned. We could all go."
She took a cookie, looking thoughtful. "I could look online, too."

"Cody!" Dari was calling into the bathroom, where Cody had gone. "Do you want to go out on a house ride this weekend?"
It was nice to have most members of the family with heightened hearing. There were less misunderstandings, and much less moving needed.
"You'll just see the same stuff," Toby assured her, wrapping an arm around her as he ate his own cookie. "They even have some family sales up here, but there has to be some that aren't. I wish we could just buy property and build."

"That sounds fun!" Cody agreed as he stepped out into the hall. He still hadn't gotten used to that, being able to hear his love from other rooms. He went and sat by Dari, looking over the computer screen.
"Find anything interesting?" He asked.
"That'd be nice," Maia agreed. But with their jobs, they'd have a hard time finding--time. "I'm sure we'll find something good," she said, and took a bite of her cookie.

"Interest, yes," Dari said. "Useful, no." He reached up to tug Cody down into his lap and rested his chin on the man's shoulder. "See this one? Built in the 50s, and it has a hidden hallway, apparently, which to me means hidden rooms. It would be fun to explore, and probably too easy to haunt."
"The last thing we need is a haunted house," Toby said, and then thought on it a moment more. "...actually maybe it'd be a good deal? I mean, we could get Michael to flush them out."

"A secret hallway?" Cody asked with interest. He settled into Dari's lap and smiled at the pictures on the screen. "It probably has a few," he agreed. "It looks nice. What's the price?"
"We could invite Michael to stay with us," Maia suggested. The ghost might like that; if the house had an attic... He'd be out of HQ, at least.

"Way too much for the work that needs done, and the potentiality that something else is living or... un-living there," Dari replied, and then smiled, "Do you want to risk digging a skeleton out of a wall? Nobody makes secret hallways for a good reason."
"Sure," Toby said to Maia, but in his mind, 'stay' meant visit, not have your own room. "Hey, Kevin should probably have a room, right? So, what? That brings us to four bedrooms. Christ."
"I can help you with the--"
"It's not the money, it's just the size. I don't know where to look for these things. I've house-shopped once ever and it was much easier than this."
"Well, two bedrooms certainly isn't four," Dari replied.

Cody's eyes widened in horror. A skeleton in the wall?! He shook his head. Nope. Nope. "Maybe a house without secret halls..." he said. Egh. Skeletons.
"Probably," Maia agreed. Four bedrooms! She placed a kiss to Toby's cheek. "We'll find one," she assured him. The perfect house. They'd find it.

"We well. We'll find one. It just might take some time," he said.
Toby kissed Maia's head. "Sure. And we'll make sure you get your pool asap."

"We'll keep looking," Cody agreed. "Maybe we'll find the one this weekend."
"Don't worry about the pool," Maia said, and smiled at him. As long as Toby was there, the place would be perfect. "We'll have to start a garden again, too."
