In general, in an anime based on a manga, a single anime episode covers 3-6 chapters of manga. Therefore if an anime starts airing before the manga it's based on is done, given enough time, it will eventually catch up to the manga. Manga creators usually have little direct involvement in animes based on their manga, and the anime creators know little more of the manga storyline than other manga readers do. So what happens when the anime catches up to the manga? It can't advance any farther. At this point, one of two things happen:

a) the anime crew stops producing new episodes and goes on break while the manga advances on its own
b) the anime crew creates explicitly non-canon episodes, usually with a reduced budget and minimal storyline with little relation to the story up to that point - essentially, filler is not allowed to go anywhere plotwise, because it can't go anywhere near anything that the manga creator might cover later, because filler isn't canon and there's problems if it contradicts canon material later on

For big commercial animes like Naruto, option b) is usually chosen, because the producers get money from commercials, and they don't want the fervor and popularity of their anime to die down, so they just keep going with s**t and trust the average Japanese viewer won't notice.

Basically the animation goes down the ******** pit and the storyline goes nowhere. Both Bleach and Naruto are in filler right now and there's been some gems of bad animation in both; Naruto's been in filler for over a year and Bleach is doing things manga readers seriously don't approve of.

First time Hollow Ichigo appears in the filler, they ******** up big-time; go look at the eyes. Besides, a non-canon appearance of Hollow Ichigo is a continuity problem - if you haven't noticed, every time Hollow Ichigo comes out there's another mark on the mask, and this'll throw off the count for sure.

You DO realize that Naruto comes from JAPAN, right?

For those of you who have seen the second Naruto movie...wouldn't it make more sense to have learned that summoning jutsu for the black hole....and used it on Orochimaru.
Suck his a** into nothing-ness. There, Sasuke is back...Orochimaru is dead. And Atsuki is scared shitless. And then it is done with the stupid Orochimaru is god section of the show.

Movie = Fillers.

In my opinion anyway.

The movies are fillers. I just think if the 'naruto' gang had any common sense it would have been used and copied...seing as whats his face survived. Though...thats not allowed. Because then the series would end.

Heh, and fillers usually take forever. I have only seen like 4 anime series without them.

Filler can actually be decent; I've seen a few filler eps of Naruto that were actually pretty good. It's the majority of the filler arcs in anime, however, that just fail.

To Naruto Fans, trust me on this:

A. Don't watch the English version. Download fansubs. If you can watch one episode of English, one episode of Japanese [the original], and honestly tell me you can't notice a GIGANTIC a** LACK OF QUALITY in the prior - you sir or madam, fail and need to be eaten by Jigen. He'll do it, you know.

B. The biiiig reason why Naruto [the anime] has SO MUCH FILLER, is that in the manga, there's a good 2 1/2 year 'jump', or "Naruto II" as the link Shouyin gave calls it. Now, this gives the anime licensers/developers a huge space where they can implement 'plots' and such that weren't covered later on. How this works out, since Naruto went with Jiriya not long before the 2-3-ish year jump started, confuses me - but, there you go. It keeps the established Naruto image going. It gets them money. Most of it ain't that great - some is.

C. Of the Naruto movies, one - I enjoy quite a bit for the artistic elements. Seeing Shikamaru in a midevial castle was literally, the s**t - and I even made some Photoshop things off the scene(s). The other one about the movie actor.. nmm.

D. Gahgahgah, this goes with A, but GOD DAMMIT, THEY RAPED CHOUJI AND ROCK LEE'S VOICES IN THE ENGLISH VERSION. Naruto's voice was tolerable - but I mean, they must have picked horrible voice actors on purpose for the above two rolls, then raped said actors anally, before starving them for two weeks - then allowing them to voice the roles. Ehwwww.

There's one of Bleach, too.
