TheDarkHooded: You might want to read the main rulebook through a tad, that will answer most questions you have. A good table size would be around 4'x4' for small games.
In regards to your opponents army, read his codex and check his unit, war gear and weapon entries. The pulse carbine and rifle both have AP 5! It never hurts to check on what your enemy has, it can help you in shaping your own force a bit. wink
Staples? Opinions differ on that. Some swear by flying monsters, others use large hordes and some prefer armies with just Carnifexes and two Ripper swarms as troops. Why be scared of building an army? Building an army and experimenting with it is part of the fun with the hobby. Mind you, a lot of people just build killer lists to win! Win and nothing else.
Personally I don't play Tyranids so I can't help you with the ideal force, but personally I always go for what I like to field and what I find looking best on the table top. It might not always win games, but at least I play with the things I like best. In my case I'd go for several big hordes of Gaunts as a first wave followed by a Tyrant and a Fex or two, maybe a Zoanthrope tagging along. Throw in some infiltrating (?) Genestealers and you've got a nice bag of surprises.

Yeah, I should take a look at his Codex >,<;;;; He tends to make things up too, which doesn't help, since I don't know if he's telling the truth or not!!
But no worries, and yes, I came to a similar conclusion about the army list... I'm going to buy a few more models today. One of the main problems I have is that I'm....swarmed.
My opponent has more models and troops in battle than I do, so I guess that means I spend too much on biomorphs....
That needs to be fixed, fast. ^^;;;;;;
Thanks for the info and advice!!!

But wait, even with AP 5 I still can't take an armor save even if my gaunts have a 5+ save, right??

Indeed, so you either need to take extra carapace or extra models to bulk things out a bit. wink
I'd suggest that you read through the main rulebook along with your own codex and your opponents codex for a bit, from the way you tell things it seems that don't grasp some of the more basic things of the game yet. sweatdrop

Lady Blodwynn Good luck and try not to go too much overboard with the upgrades and biomorphs for your little ones. wink But it's so much funnnnnnn. And a good way to meet point-limits when you lack models. 300 point carnifexes ftw (when you need points, lol).

DarkHood, I agree with Blodwynn's point about infiltrating Gene Stealers. If there's one thing that Fire Warriors (and Tau units in general, not counting Kroot) can't do, it's win consistently in assaults. Gene Stealers have a few wonderful things going on for them, mostly that they have lots of attacks and Rending. Next on the list for being wonderful (in my eyes) are Gaunt broods and Ripper swarms. While Rippers might not have a good save, they have lots of wounds and soak up fire.
Also, welcome to the guild.

Thank you for the welcome!!
And I do like the Genestealers, and I have some really funny story about how amazing Ripper Swarms are.
But I want to know, is like 20 pts per Genestealer worth it? In the build that I have (I'll post it) just a retinue for the Broodlord. I was planning on having them soak up the fire so I can get my gaunts and Warriors into melee.
I don't have any Ripper Swarms, but this is what I came up with after doing a lot of looking at army builds and seeing what works.
The only think I'm iffy on is the 3 Zoanthropes. I like the warp blast, but I feel like I might need more troops. I tend to get outnumbered, and well...yeah. What do you guys think?

I'm thinking, should I drop the Broodlord? He does slow down the Genestealers....
I'd drop the Broodlord for another squad of Genestealers.
And I do want a Carnifex... should I drop the 3 Zoanthropes for them?

You could drop two Zoanthropes and get a Carnifex instead, maybe throw in more Gaunts with the extra points to make the horde bulkier. You should drop the extra WS on the Termagaunts, they are more suited for shooting than outright assaulting.

18 points is usually a great deal more than most players will let you go over; you should probably knock off a genestealer or a hormagaunt to make it even.

Broodlods don't have fleet and a brood of Genestealers with him can't move with the fleet rule becuase the Broodlord doesn't have the special rule to T,T
