I switched to horn this year after five years of playing flute. I absolutely love it. :] I really wish I would have thought about playing horn years ago.
Anyways, two noob questions for horn:
When I got my instruments this summer, they didn't give me a horn mouthpiece. Luckily, my friend lent me his extra mouthpiece so I could practice, but I still want to return it to him. Another friend said its a lot easier to have a few so you don't have to keep going between your horn and mellophone case just to get your mouthpiece. Are there any particular kinds of mouthpieces- good brands, bad brands, etc., or are they all pretty much the same thing? (I also managed to get the mouthpiece stuck in the mellophone adapter. I'm gonna get it unstuck tomorrow, though. I fail. xD wink
Are there any good/suggested solo books for horn? I want to get some pieces to practice on, but I'm not really sure what's good or not. The level of the piece doesn't really matter to me since I need something to work up to.

I'm only in 8th grade and I play the French Horn! I love it to bits! Next year I'll play the Mellophone, and I cant' wait! I'll get to be in Marching band, and even though I won't have much time to myself, it'll be really cool! Especially because I'm already friends with lots of the people in the Marching band! I'm sooo excited!!!!!!

Heh. So the Frenchies are well represented in this guild pretty well. YEA. So to anyone even thinking of playing mellophone. DO IT. Its the best. Except its REALLY heavy, and the bell gets in the way. BUT, it has AWESOME parts, the total opposite of concert horn, and you get all sort of people talking to you at comps about your instrument. Basically "WOw. Dude. whats that thing you're playing?" At least you dont have to say Flugelhorn. (no offense to all you flugies out there!)

Wow I'm so excited to see other French Horn players. I nearly fainted! lol I've been playing for about six years now, and I can't find anything to hate about my instrument!
At the moment I'm second horn, but I'll be moving up to first next year and hopefully I'll be section leader! biggrin

Quote: the french horn is ugly as sin, but the mellophone looks pretty cool. i'm getting one tommorow. *tears running down her face* Ugly!! What is ugly!?! It's the most beautiful instrument in the entire world!! I can't hear a (good) horn play without almost crying from the beautiful sounds, almost like a human voice, but with so much more emotion. *sighs deeply* I've been playing 10 years. Mello's pretty cool if you want to make loud noises, and it has cool parts, but nothing beats out the horn. Mellos are too out of tune and obnoxious. Fun, but definitely can't compare to horn.

Mellophone is pretty darn awesome. Our section this year was pretty good, even though our section leader was a sophomore, our other two members (including me) were playing mellophone for the first time, and I had to lead the section most of the time anyway. We got a lot of, "Yeah mellophones!" on the judge's tapes.
Even so, mellophone can be pretty evil with its out-of-tuneness and gigantic bells.
