It made sense, now, that they'd wear white coats: cooler, under the weight of the tropical sun, than anything else would have been. Still, it was hot, hotter than he was used to, enough to slide into the realm of uncomfortable, and Ever halfway wished that he'd waited until after dark to start his wander around this part of the island. Only halfway, though. The other half had more sense.
The beach was something of a mess, not the beautiful stretch of white sand he'd seen in photographs, but it was still unlike anywhere else he'd been. Ever paused, grinned, peering down at a strange shape halfway obscurred in the sand.
// Bone. // Amory sounded lazy, distracted, right now. Not really paying attention as much as usual. // Battered beach bone. Babbling boy battered by barnacles. //
"It's not a bone." By now, of course, Ever knew he didn't have to speak out loud, but -- still. It felt more natural. More social. it felt less like he was having a conversation with himself.
// Take it, then. //
Still, he paused, before sinking to his knees in the sand.
"A branch, if anything." And as Amory laughed he dug around it.

No: it was not a branch. He'd realize as soon as he pulled it from the sand. It was pale, sun-bleached and sand-filled, some kind of electronic device, he thought. Ever didn't have the experience to identify what exactly, but that hardly mattered anyway. As he held it, it crumbled back toward dust, and he was left blinking down at his hands.
"Not a bone. Like I said." But now his skin prickled, something close by, like a predator. Ever looked up and around and decided the beach didn't draw him as much as he thought. He'd slip back toward HQ.
