I've always had a thing for the Victorian Era. I love the attire so much that I've try to mesh in with my style. I simply love clocks, gears, old trains, music, and anything else that reminds me of that era. Even though I know now that's called Steampunk, it doesn't change my love for it. whee

Actually, I have learned about Steampunk when I stumbled upon the Steampunk fashion thread in the Lifestyles forum. After reading the article about it in Wikipedia and looking at a few steampunk pictures, my interest became bigger.

I grew up in a DIY household and after many failed attempts to fix things and being roughly pushed aside I got a bit frustrated.
Ended up reading a ton of Girl Genius instead, and hell if i needed any more excuse than that to wear waistcoats/goggles in public. xd
My mum approves of the look and has been helping me with the sewing aspects (timepiece vest anyone?), the rest is just odds and ends I pick up such as my dad's masonic tophat/goggles.

I'd have to say the Myst games were the biggest factor in my becoming Steampunk- I'm not sure why, but there are some things (Atrus' lab in Tomahna, the Age of Voltaic, and other less 'tangible' aspects) that seem very Steampunk to me. And then there's my love of snooping around in antique stores and attics/basements... ninja
It was just a little over a week ago I discovered there's a name for my interests smile

Iliana Damasca . And then there's my love of snooping around in antique stores and attics/basements... ninja It was just a little over a week ago I discovered there's a name for my interests smile Second this... love the Victorian mourning outfit from the broaches to the lovely skirts and beaded tops.. Will spend hours searching shops from top to bottom looking for that one perfect piece. You add to that my love for Firefly's gritty outfits and my childhood obsession for taking apart old non working clocks and playing and making things with the cogs.. from earring to new little machines.

A simple art commission from a friend got me into all this. She asked for a large steampunk inspired pendant but at the time I had no idea what steampunk was, so I did some research and that research lead to a deeper dive into the subculture. All my art has meaning and I didn't want my steampunk stuff to be meaningless. I wanted to know about the whole thing and learning about it made me very interested in it

I think I always have been.
When I was much younger my family had a train set, and we had two locomotives. One was the typical Santa Fe diesel, the other an old western steam locomotive. Up until it broke I ALWAYS chose the steam locomotive. Since I've usually preferred old school machinery, at times with exposed inner workings, showing how it ticks as it were.
I've also had a fascination with science fiction and fantasy, so Steampunk was a natural fit., a lot of the media helped too.
Skies of Arcadia, Dark Cloud 2, Final Fantasy, Last Exile, Full Metal Alchemist, Steam Detectives, World of Warcraft, Fly For Fun. I just LOVE the settings, where a team of knights and mages take on a giant robot, and a gyrocopter or motorcycle is as feasible a mount as a horse or dragon. Where a mage can summon a clockwork golem as well as stone
One of my friends swears in another life I either worked on or designed an airship.

The movie Serenity seemed Steampunk-ish to me. So that was something. And the thread in the fashion forum has the best Steampunk pictures ever. I fell in love with it about a year ago ^^

Like most people here, I liked alot of steampunk components before I knew what it was. I was obssessed with drawing, classical music, reading and Barbies ever since I was little. My sister used to get these brochures with pictures of collectable Barbies and I always gravitated toward the ones with victorian dresses. Simultaneously I liked to read victorian era novels and fantasy stories, watch scifi movies/shows/anime. The whole world created in the steampunk genre, I always thought was great. I didn't know what steampunk was until I chanced upon it on the Gaia Fashion and style forum. It was so awsome I had to draw it. All that stuff combines to me actually accepting steampunk not just as a genre but as something I could actually utilize on myself. So steampunk kind of snuck up on me. One minute I'm a little kid playing with dolls and the next minute I'm sewing vests and looking for pocket watches.

I actually stubled across steampunk while looking between lollita and victoriana. I liked both, but I wanted something a lot less lacey that I could do wearing pants as apposed to a skirt or dress. Steampunk is what I found.
