"Rope?" Alexei frowned, sniping another bot, pulling a new clip out of his satchel, and reloading. Out of the corner of his eye he spotted a crewmember peering curiously around the corner. "OI! Some rope for the good man?"

The man darted out of sight and he returned his attention to the plighted airship. "So who's in charge here?"

Franz stood a moment, looking at the swarmed ship. How many would be able to escape? Now that he was off it, he could see more clearly the attacking lines. One was in the balloon itself. It wouldn't be long until the bots overwhelmed engineering, and the whole thing started to sink.

He wouldn't be surprised if half the crew was either dead of subdued by now. He sighed, and turned, seeking out the good doctor aboard this ship. He would need use of his hands soon enough.

"We should leave. Pirates no will wait long. Bring this ship down too."

"He's right. " Helena murmured, after having sunk down to lean against the railing on the sides of their savior ship. "We'd better get moving as soon as possible." She rolled her shoulders. taking a deep breath she looked around the rest of the ship, she was a bit frazzled and annoyed looking as would be understandable under the current situation.

Alexei, thoroughly unnerved at this point, glanced from the woman slumped against the railing, to the man walking off in search of a doctor, to the man on the other ship.

"Are you absolutely positive you can't jump?"

Christopher couldn't believe that the people on the other ship didn't have rope. Of all of the things that one should have on an airship, rope ranked number three, just under a compass and a steel candlestick holder. Not the candlestick, just the holder thank you very much.

Christopher tried to gauge the distance of the jump again.

"I don't know, maybe." He yelled to Alexei.

He looked back down at his bottle of wine and noticed that it was half empty. Now he just needed somewhere to stow his trusty ladle and the bottle of his rather fatalistic wine. If only he had something to tie them to his waist. Christopher had never worn a belt. Ever since the Great Belt Crisis he had been taught never to trust them, and didn't care to take the inherent risk.

"Aha!" He thought. He quickly ran inside the little service closet and produced a rope.

He tried wrapping it around his waist to give something to tie the bottle and ladle too. It was no good, the rope was too long. If only he had something to cut it with. But it was no good, time was running short and he still didn't have a rope to help get him across to the other ship.

Christopher adjusted his large chef's hat and with the ladle in one hand and the wine in the other, started charging for the railing.

As he reached the edge he jumped on top of the rail and pushed off with all of his might. It was then that a though occurred to him.

"Idiot!"

"I should have checked the cabin for rope."

It was around this time that the crewman returned with the rope. Alexei ignored him, watching--totally flummoxed--as the man who was evidently a chef found rope, ignored it, and proceeded to leap across.

"Good Lord," he whispered. "The man's completely drunk."

Stuffing his gun into his satchel in a single swift motion, he rushed forward in case the man needed help.

Helena rubbed her eyes with the palms of her hands. Bloody pirates, she shouldn't have sent the Smithsonian anything at all, then no one would have known and she could have gotten to America in peace! There was no changing the past though. The red head deftly, moved to touch the precious skull where it was hidden at her hip beneath the skirt.

Christopher thudded into the side of the airship hard. The lip of the deck slamming into his chest and underarms.

"That's gunna smart later." He thought.

He squirmed around trying to throw a leg over the side before a short man came to his aid and helped him over the side. Christopher laid on the deck facing upwards for a few seconds, breathing heavily.

"Thanks, mate. Almost didn't make that one. Stupid rope."

Alexei nodded. "You're welcome." He glanced at the woman. "Anyone else of note we need to grab?"

(anyone who I may miss can just pretend they climbed on for the sake of keeping the story moving.)

"I don't know! I'm not the captain, probably so." She muttered, to tired to really yell so she contented herself with the angry growly noise common to bitchy women who'd run out of energy. She looked up again, peering over the ledge back at the ship with a tired heavy sigh, slumping back down to sit on her bum.

He raised his hands, startled. "Just thought I'd ask. We've already started pulling away."

Glancing over at the sinking airship, he frowned. Chance would probably have loved him to get one of the clockwork beasties, but...ah well. "Pirates." It didn't bode well; the captain should probably be told, unless he figured it out on his own already. He sighed and returned his attention to the woman, holding out a hand.

"I'm Alexei."

Franz hissed, looking at his hands with the doctor. "Well, that does not seem good."

It was several minutes of hissing at the pain before the bandages were applied. Franz made a mental note to buy himself some gloves so that if he ever had to do something that stupid again, he wouldn't end up with worthless hands. He nodded absently as the doctor went on and on about what could be concluded in a few sentences.

Franz got up, and pushed himself past the doctor, heading back towards the others. The cook always had booze on him, and Franz was in the mood for a drink.

That is, if he could figure out how to hold the bottle.

Christopher stared at the winded explorer, Helena, and the captain who had moments ago saved all of their lives. They exchanged quick words with one another while Christopher sat there in disbelief.

"What had just happened." He thought. "This whole situation was just so damned confusing."

It had been a normal day in his normal kitchen and he was stirring up the normal, horrible stew when out of nowhere the ship was under attack. And not just by pirates. The trespassers were strange mechanical spiders!

"This is all too much for me."
He thought.

Christopher stood up and began to walk to the cabin. For, what must have been, the hundredth time he couldn't remember why he had taken the job on th airship. He could have been working at the soup kitchen back home with a cold, hard bed and scenery that didn't change every time you woke up to do your morning business.

He had even had a chance with the comely daughter of the barber. What was her name again? Jenna..., Jane..., that's right it was Beth. Ahh Bess. She was beautiful. Well, that wasn't true. She wasn't ugly. Christopher closed his eyes and drew up a blank image of the girl. Brunette? Blond?

It was no matter. He had loved her. Well, not really. But who knows, in a couple years he could have. Instead he had wasted it all on the promise of a decent wage and so called adventure aboard the airship, and look where that had gotten him. On another airship!

Christopher reached the cabin that passed for a mess hall and sat down on the nearest bench. The crew of this new, strange ship was busy fussing over the deck, but Christopher had other things to worry about.

He lazily pulled the cork from the wine bottle with a pop and slouched on the table. He upturned the bottle into his mouth and took a long gulp.

Helena glanced up at the man and tiredly extended her hand to meet his. "Helena." She answered simply, not quite so angry this time as her adrenaline started to ebb away. She glanced around the deck spying the cook, an apparent alcoholic, and the damaged Franz. She rubbed her eyes, this was insane, and she knew that while she and more importantly the skull was still here they'd all be in danger.

Helena would have to tell them to give them a chance to get away, however there was the trouble of being able to trust any of them enough to tell them about the treasure she was currently safeguarding.

Franz wandered over to the others, and looked around at what he could see of the ship. He anchored himself, and sat down on the rail, leaning back and looking above.

"So, how well is this thing defended?"
