It was Mikami's turn, and he came on with fury, stabbing and slashing, spinning completely around and with perfect balance and measured speed.
Ignoring the pain and the warm blood running down the right side of his back, Entreri matched that intensity, parrying left and right, up and down, the claws ringing in one long note as they clanged and scraped. With every parry of the gauntlets, Entreri caught the protected claws more softly, retreting his own claws upon contact, as he might catch a thrown egg to avoid breaking it. That was more taxing, though, more precise and time consuming, and the necessity of such a concentrated defense prevented him from regaining the momentum and the offense.

Alkaid caught yet another follower in the bushes, and dove off of Chloe's shoulder to counterattack.

Another Take Down had the Poochyena dashing off into the bushes, yelping. Chloe smiled, using another Potion on Alkaid to recover her, before the Swablu took up perch on her shoulder once again.
"We're almost out of here," Chloe promised with a wink. "As soon as we find those two, we're headed on to Lilycove. From there we'll catch the train to Celadon," she explained. "I need to stop by the Seafoam Islands and the Power Plant briefly, but after that, we're headed to Snowpoint to see about getting Entreri evolved."

Around and around the sheltered lea they went, Mikami pressing, not tiring, and growing more confident with every strike.
He had a right to do so, Entreri had to admit, for he fought brilliantly, fluidly, and only then did Drizzt begin to understand that Mikami had let the gauntlets infiltrate his thoughts, was following the instincts of the magical artifacts as if they were his own. They had found a complementary relationship, a joining of weapon and wielder.

Worse, Entreri realized. The gauntlets were interpreting his movements, analyzing his strategy, and in turn, was passing that information on to Mikami.
He understood then, to his horror, how Mikami had so easily anticipated his rollover and second throw move after the initial cross parry. He understood then, to his dilemma, his inability to set up the winning strike. The gauntlets knew him, and it had taken good measure of his abilities. Just as damaging, since Mikami had apparently given over to the gauntlets' every intrusion, the artifacts and Flygon forming a symbiosis of sorts, a joining of knowledge and instinct, of skill and understanding.

It seemed they were almost to the spot of the two battlers, as the sounds of the struggle between Entreri and Mikami were getting closer. Chloe couldn't see either of them yet, so she knew they were still a little ways off, but they would get there in time.

Back he stepped, parrying a slash. Back he stepped again, and he knew that he was running out of room, that the stone formation at the edge of the clearing was near. He began to parry more and retreat less, his steps slowing and becoming more measured, until he felt at last the thick granite of the stone behind his trailing heel.
Apparently sensing that Entreri had run out of room, Mikami came forward, more aggressively, executing a double thrust low. Surprised by the maneuver, Entreri launched a double-cross down, the appropriate parry, where he crossed his claws down over the two thrusting gauntlets. Mikami would have no choice but to disengage and retreat to strike again, there was no other maneuver that would allow him to press forward.

Mikami would know that, he realized in the instant it took him to begin the second part of his counter, kicking his foot through the upper cross of his down-held claws, and so when Mikami reacted, Entreri already had his improvisation ready.
He kicked for Mikami's face, so it appeared. Mikami leaned back and drove his claws straight up, his intent to knock the kicking Entreri, already in an awkward maneuver, off his balance.
But Entreri shortened his kick, which could have no more than glanced Mikami's face anyway (curse his short legs), and changed the angle of his momentum upward then used Mikami's push from below to bolster that directional change. Entreri leaped, right up and tucked in a tight turn that spun him head over heels to land lightly atop the boulders, and it was Mikami who overbalanced as the counterweight disappeared in a back flip, the Flygon stumbling back a step.

Typical of the crazy Flygon, Mikami growled and came right back in, slashing across, which Entreri hopped easily. Up above, Entreri had the advantage, but Mikami tried to use sheer aggressiveness to dislodge him from the rocks, slashing and stabbing with abandon. One swipe cut across short of Entreri, who threw back his hips, and sent the gauntlets hard into the back of a boulder. With a crack and a spark, the claws slashed through, leaving a gouge in the granite.
