This was probably already mentioned, but how about a Role Play?

Um, one thing would be to update the front for the new year. It might put potential new members off to see that we're still waiting for Goblet of Fire to come out in theatres. wink

I was wondering if you had Quidditch Teams here...if you don't I think you should make one. And a tryouts could be held by answering questions about quidditch or something like that. And since no first years can be part of the Quidditch team, they will have to comment more...think of the possiblities. And there can be Quidditch Captains too!

Having Quiddich Teams wouldn't be bad, but it would be a bit hard to type out, as there is so much detail that must be put in to it. They would be nice to have, but a pain to type.

Once you enter you must be sorted into a house. No it is not a roleplay, your house earns you housepoints and once a month we award a housecup, the winning house gets gold, or somehting special. Occasioanly we have house agaisnt house competions too, So enter now and be sorted!

Right, this is a direct quote from the Haven homepage, and as you can see, there are about 5 typos in here. Something, occasionally, against, and competitions are all spelled wrong and so shouldn't be capitalized. Considering the homepage made a big deal about literacy, having that many typos so close together is a bit hypocritical. Plus, that kind of thing is off-putting to many intelligent people who would want to join. If there's any possible way to do so, I suggest that the homepage be reread for any other typos and duly corrected.

Hear, Hear, Zaurak! I quite agree!

Re-posted from the Ravenclaw thread- I don't think this has been suggested.

Y'know- we could start a book club or something. Find a long fanfic, Harry Potter, of course, and have everyone read it, then review, discuss, etcetera.

Or book challenges- I used to do them with my friends at school. We'd give ourself a goal- 10,000 pages, and start reading books. Then we'd keep track of each and review them, till we reached our goal. It was a fun way to keep ourselves reading.

Very lovely idea! Would you like to start a thread? I'm afraid my Muggle duties right now are limiting my times with new books, and I think it's a GREAT idea!

Mayhaps this has been mentioned, but possibly having the common rooms be in sub-forums so there could be threads inside? Instead of being threads themselves? I dunno. Just a thought. ^^

How long does it usually take to be sorted? Like a week, or under? Just wondering.

Prefect-Sallie

I also really like this idea, I mean, why not? We have house sortings, we have common rooms, we have the house cup. Why not have Quidditch too? Of course, we'll have to get active members to be on the team and it would consist of a large amount of writing, but it is doable.

Another idea I think we could do is a Halloween ball. Halloween's coming up in two months and since most of us don't pass door to door anymore ( at least, I think most of us don't pass anymore ), we could celebrate with a Halloween ball, costumes and everything. If we were to get a group of members to PM other members about the event, we could maybe get back some old members back and have enough people online to ( dare I say it ) bring the guild back to life. True, this could only last momentarily but what do we have to lose? We could always give it a try, at least.

To our mods/Heads of houses,

Lately, I've noticed that some of our members haven't really been respecting the literacy rule and it's really been getting on my nerves. Wherever I go, there's always that odd member not using capitals and proper punctuation. I also see alot of chat speak as well. True, I know we allow semi-literates, but this is just ridiculous sometimes. This problem can easily be avoided by a bit of effort and rereading a post before posting it on a thread. By the look of some posts, they aren't even doing that. Now, most members in this guild are really nice people, and I mean them no harm, but I believe we should enforce better grammar as soon as possible. Grammatical errors and typos are fine once in a while, but the text talk and the proper punctuation needs to improve.

Now weither you mods take this post seriouslyor not is up to you: I've done what I could by saying what I had to say.

Thank you for your time.

PS: Hope noone thinks I'm a b***h after this. ninja

Garnet, I love the above suggestion and I've opened up a mod thread to discuss Halloween ideas.
Also, I'm aware that Gaia has been hinting about a big Halloween event, so I want to be sure we can weave a Masquerade ball into or around what they are planning.

I agree wholeheartedly, and we are thinking of taking away points in posts that have a lot of errors, like 5 or more errors if they are short posts, more if they are long. The mods haven't quite decided yet. In the mean time, you can pm me or any mod if there is someone who are not respecting the literacy rule consistently. I can't be everywhere, and neither can the other mods, to watch, so we do need help. Also, the Chatterbox subforum is exempt from pretty much everything except no bumping and TOS.

Some people don't have English as a first language, or ADD or something neurological, but I agree with you, there are folks who need a reminder, and they need to give their fellow guild members the courtesy of running a spell-check program on a post. Again, one or two mistakes, if someone is obviously trying, is not a problem. We can accept that, and we know spell check doesn't catch everything.

In the past people were banned who didn't follow our literacy rule. And this Guild was started as a Haven from the chat/text message speak that were rampant in many other Gaian Guilds.

So if some one is consistently ignoring the literacy rule, you could politely request that they edit their posts first. If you need to nominate them for demerits, Please use the how-to report post for MERIT info in the House Cup thread, it will work just as well for demerits and it will be this case of helping keep Haven literate.
