Hi! I'm a flute, and there aren't any flutes in our jazz band at school, but I've been working on trumpet for about a year and am playing the third trumpet part. Mostly because we've gone through an extreme shortage of trumpets over the past few years.
I still say flutes can totally do amazing jazz.

I love jazz band! A few years back I went to my band director and told her I wanted to be in jazz band and she told me to learn tenor sax (I'm a flute player). Well, I did, and I was in our school jazz band for three years. I loved it. It was amazing. I'm in between jazz bands right now because I'm out of school, though. I'm hoping to join the jazz band at the community college I'm going to. I miss it so much. heart

I used to be in my middle school jazz band. I was part of the first one there EVER. I miss it so much. Marchign and concert music is fun to play, but jazz is something that you can really have fun with. It's like... poetry made up on the spot. You can't improvise with marching or concert music, but with jazz, you can pour your soul into it. I played clarintet and alto sax for my jazz band. I wish my high school would start a jazz band. We played things like "Joy to the World" by three dog night and "Wolly Bully."

I'm in one of my school's jazz bands! We have our first festival/competition on Tuesday, and I'm kinda worried. I play piano, and we're doing this ballad called 'Round Midnight and there are 5 flats in the key signature! I haven't had much time to practice it, so I'm playing all the wrong chords. -____- Oh well, I'm okay with the rest of the pieces. biggrin

thats awesome... we have a tuba in our band, but he isnt very good... in fact... I'm pretty sure, now that I think of it, we are the worst band ever...
We have 6 people on woodwind and brass combined... on percussion and strings (the strings part being a bass guitar)? 8... 4 of which do almost nothing... it is so sad...

I play electric bass in my schools jazz band.... We have such a motley crew of a band... But I'm relearning the stand-up so I can play for a community college band. It's going alright. But since we're on a jazz thread, I was hoping that another stand-up player could tell me how to improve my speed, since it's a bit lacking. Any hints would be helpful, PM me.
Also, I gotta say, you can talk all you want about the saxes, the trumpets, and the trombones, but it the RYTHEM SECTION that keeps everyone together 3nodding

Hey, I've been playing jazz for two years now and I really dig listening to Cannonball Adderley. Who are your favorite artists?

I've played in my school's jazz band for 3 years now. MALLET PERCUSSION, BABY, YEH!! There's a story 'bout that, actually.
Back when I first entered the school, I wanted to audition for the jazz band on piano. I tried out, and to my surprise, I had made it!...but on the marimba. I played it, and it grew on me. I got to be my own section! Plus I can pull a mean improv solo. 3nodding
