kingpinsqeezels The last time I checked, anti-semitism is not okay just because you're Jewish. I suppose if it's all in good humor and the jokes are horrible Holocaust jokes then...I dunno. Poking fun at obvious stereotypes about your ethnic group isn't always a sick thing. Whoops. I meant aren't. Jeez, that made me sound horrible. sweatdrop

Divash I've heard this, too. Apparently his maternal grandmother was Jewish. However, since she apparently did embrace Christianity, and no one in his lineage embraced or re-embraced Jewish belief or observance before his birth or during his life, he wasn't a Jew himself, nor are his descendants. That totally contradicts what Ive read

Donovinhs Knight Divash I've heard this, too. Apparently his maternal grandmother was Jewish. However, since she apparently did embrace Christianity, and no one in his lineage embraced or re-embraced Jewish belief or observance before his birth or during his life, he wasn't a Jew himself, nor are his descendants. That totally contradicts what Ive read that "a jew is a jew is a jew"? once a jew, always a jew. but that only works if one is a jew to begin with. think about it. what would happen if we held everyone of possible jewish matrilineal descent to be jews? the truth is, we have no idea. it's very possible that the majority of the world is jewish, according that premise. but that in of itself contradicts what you've read, doesn't it?

for those of you who are on my friendslist you received an email from me stateing that i do not approve of Gaian xmas and that i wish for a gaian Hanukkah, also i said explicity not to wish me a merry xmas, that i didnt hate xmas, i just don't like being wished a merry x-mas.
well i got a reply from a freinds wife going on and on about how im dressed as an elf blah blah which i wasnt, and how i should SAY in my SIG that im jewish, and blah blah. and it was lame that i sent out a mass email and how im a hypocrite.

Silverah I don't know if this happens a lot where you guys live, but at my school a large percentage of students have a jewish parent or grandparent but do not practice any aspects of the faith themselves. For example: Girl 1 has never attended synogogue, knows nothing about the beliefs of the religion, the history of the people, and has never attended any sort of religious school. She does, however, attend church sometimes. She calls herself Jewish because her dad is and she uses hannukah as an excuse to get more presents. Boy 1 spends his time doodling swatstikas on his friends arms for no better reason than liking the shape. When I approach him about it, he says it's ok because he is "half jewish." Girl 2 HAS attended synogogue/had a bat mitzvah (through the messianic movement), and is "half jewish." As a compromise, her family goes to the messianic synogogue. She picks and chooses which parts of the religion to observe and which parts not to. She used to wear a mogen david, but has since stopped. When asked if she is Jewish or Christian, she answers "both." However, it seems fairly clear that she is, for the most part, very christian. Do you know people like this? How do you resist the urge to shout? Do you even encounter the urge? Do you consider them Jewish if they show no attachment to the religion? Do you believe in "Jews as a race"? I think that is quite enough spoon for you. I like being half in half Christainty has some cool points that one can agree or disagree with. mesanic judaism is not smart though. Alright. Where do I begin? What you, and by this, I mean everyone who has posted here, are all mainly describing, is a world in which I am constantly immersed in, and it is NOT something I enjoy.
It is this atmosphere, this "saying your Jewish" that leaves me sad and a little angry. All last year I had to watch a kid in my school who wore a Kippa during lunch, give in to pressure and start making fun of his heritage. You know what he did? People would toss quarters on the ground and he would literally dive head-first into the floor to get them. He did it, he said, "Because he was a Jew."
It is this atmosphere, where I am laughed at because I want to go to Shul every Shabbat evening and cry when I can't go due to mandatory chorus rehearsals.
It makes me livid, when I hear the people I know are Jewish in my school make fun of their religion. In my book, "Just because you're a Jew" doesn't make it "alright" to tell anti-semetic jokes.
There has been a lot of focus, in this topic, on the Jews who claim to be Jewish and yet they don't go to Shul, or they don't follow the Torah, or that they go to Church too. But one thing I want to bring up are the kids who I've been in Hebrew School with all my years and yet they don't get anything out of it. They are there because their parents want them to. All they do is sit and complain about how "boring" discussing what certain passages of the Torah are about. I mean, my GOSH if you won't respect your religion, don't disrespect it in the synogauge, and if you dislike it, DON'T COME.
Sorry if this has seemed mean, I just get miffed when I come across people like that. Oh, and don't get me wrong, not ALL the Jews where I live are like that. Two of my best friends are usually sitting right next to me in Shul as often as we can go and welove to listen to our Rabbi and discuss the portions. There are just some other kids around where I live... well, I've already explained the situation. Eheh. Alright, I'm done with my little rant. You can all come out from hiding now! XD
