"I have three maiko now," she said. "Two are almost ready for the tea house and one I just took on," she added with a sad smile. Tora was still sad about the whole 'love' ordeal. She squinted her eyes to hold back tears.

"Oh my, I'm about to take on another girl very soon myself." Iyasu watched Tora and sighed. "Tora, please be honest with me, how do you feel about Kibakichi-san?"

"I thought he was cute and had a good heart to be taking such good care of the horses," she said as tears started to flow. She whimpered but stoped halfway through, so it sounded almost like a gasp. Tora shook her head. "I saw you liked him so I backed away," she said, wiping away the tears. "You see, Omny knew I liked Shagatsu! The way I talked about him, the way I treasured his items, the way I acted around him and everything!" she said in a loud, high voice. More tears came as old pains re-entered her memory, she wiped those away too.

"Tora --" She stood up and moved to Tora's side. She embraced in a deep hug, and pulled out a hankerchief from her obi, "Here."

Tora melted in Iyasu's hug and cried more. She took the hankerchief and dabed her wet cheeks. "I'm hopless," she trailed off. She looked at Iyasu and thanked her.

She patted her on the back soothingly while rocking very slowly back and forth, like the lapping of a lake onto its shore. She looked out into the sky and sighed hopelessly. They were at a point of impass.
"You are not hopeless . . if at all, I should be." She joked at her family's misfortunate history, "Give it time. The Divine has made someone for you. Let him come to you."

Tora cuddled into Iyasu like a child would to her mother. She continued to wipe her face and take deep breaths to slow her racing heart. She sat in silence with her eyes closed while the coos of Iyasu filled the air.

"Tora-san . . . we are at an impass here . . ." She said softly to her, continuing the rocking motion. "What do you think we should do?"

Tora sat up and shook her head. "There is only one thing to do- see to your happiness," she said. "I need to get over Shagatsu-san first," she said in a clear voice. A few more sniffles escaped her nose and she was done crying... for now.

"I'm flattered you'd think that," she said in a small voice. She was heart broken to see Iyasu hurt over something like this. "But you've known him longer and liked him before me," she said hugging her. "It's no contest who should get him based on those facts," she said with sorrow in her eyes. She gave a reassuring, half smile.

Tora saw the pain in Iyasu's eyes. "I wish we could take this all back," she said sadly, on the verge of tears.

"Then . . . I'll b --." Her voice trembled, but did not leave a bitter tone after it. Her eyes gave a way nothing. She did not reveal any emotion. Iyasu loathed to say them, because they were quite the opposite of what she felt breaking in her chest. The cresant smile Tora displayed earlier was replaced with another verging gush of tears.

Tora stopped and looked confused at Iyasu. "Go on, please. What were you about to say?" she asked.
