Ok, someone please help me here. All of my friends have Space Marine armies (I do too, but thats beside the point) and I hate fighting those damn superhumans!!! I have: HQ: XV8 commander w/ bodyguard (x2) Troops: FW squad, kroot squad (i hate my kroot...) Elites: stealth troopers (x3) Fast attack: 5 drone squad (x2) and pathfinders (3 with rail rifles, 3 with PC) Heavy: hammerhead other: devilfish
any suggestions on how to improve? i think i should add some more FW squads (drop the kroot), but my friend says to scrap the whole army

Use numbers, marines cannot spare anyone, if you can easily outshoot them, you'll win, so take more blast and multiple shot weapons and use only a few heavy weapons

However, my lack of FW's and my idiotic, useless kroot have created problems...

I wasn't very impressed with the Kroot's stats when I looked at the Tau Codex I thought they were too weak to be relied on as a staple assault squad. From what I remember Tau need to be played much the same way as the guard need to be played. You need to include heavy weapons that can destroy those damn Rhinos. Then you can just sit back and pound the s**t out of those assualt squads and that is the one thing space marines can't handle. Long range combat.

well the kroot are there to do close combat. since the tau are really weak at close combat the kroot take the brunt of the attack. you cant expect them to win with shooting. shoot with the tau and flank or draw fire with the kroot. and they are relativly cheap to deploy so i wouldnt worry about losing a few especially if it means moving your tau to a better position.

That's all I use them for: a meat shield. They infiltrate so I set them up to slow the marine's advance. However, when I played against Eldar I was outnumbered, I killed Guardians and Howling Banshees in droves with volley after volley of fire but two (just two!!) Warp Spiders passed my defenses. They killed my XV8 bodyguards and broke my defensive line... This made me realize that I didn't have anything once I lost my FW's (they failed their morale check and fell back off the table). I am thinking that I should get 2-3 more FW squads..... or quit playing Tau. (BTW can someone tell me how a Falcon Grav Tank can kill a Hammerhead? That happened and I was really confused as to how a brightlance outgunned my Railgun...)

Well I don't know about the stats of the rail gun but if I remeber correctly the brightlance has some very nasty rules where it can actually lower the armor of a tank. Or maybe your Hammerhead driver was just an unlucky b*****d who happened to dodge right into a brightlance shot. It tends to happen to tanks like the hammer head and the Leman Russ due to people pouring fire on it for the first couple turns until it dies.

Avatar of Retribution The railgun is S10 AP1 but I couldn't get a shot off.... What do you mean you couldn't get a shot off? Like, you rolled a critical miss when you tried to aim the thing or it just didn't do crap to the Falcon when it hit? I know if it moves more than 6 inches everthing thats penetrating counts a glancing.... Oh, and to answer your question on what you should do to improve your army - get more fire warriors. One squad of fire warriors in an entire Tau army is the most ridiculous thing I've heard, no offence. Get at least one more squad, and possibly some of those "highly versitle" battle suits I've been hearing about.

I have a question I'd like answered concerning the Tau battle suits (not the broadside). Me and a friend were having a "friendly dispute" about how their jet packs work. I thought from after looking in the Tau codex that they are able to shoot in the middle of their move, an example being the battle suit moving 3" forward, shooting, and then moving 3" back again for a total of 6" - its maximum movement. He claims that they move like Eldar jetbikes in the sense that they may move their 6" and then assult in any direction regardless of how close an enemy was - effectivly allowing it to move 6" backwards after shooting.
Now, I am willing to admitt defeat here, but I would like to think that I am right on this. If by some chance I'm not, then could somebody shed light on what the heck I was thinking of instead of battlesuit jetpacks?
