You know, the pages they have in the middle of every Codex with the nice, glossy finish and the pictures of 'Eavy Metal armies. I probably shouldn't call it an insert, since it's not removable...
Ah, yes. This is all from the 3ed Codex, so 4ed might make it all obsolete.

that explains it, the 4th ed is the one they came out with last year, with the updated models and the such. it has the name "codex tyranids" outlined in bone. yaeh, you can use it all now.

so.. let's say your hive had only Hormagaunts, Warriors, Hive Tryants and Genestealers in. That means if you have a squad of 8 hormagaunts, 2 of them in that squad can be mutants? and in the back, gaunts genus get up to 4 biomorphs..

Of course, I don't see why you'd prefer extra mutants over access to Gargoyles, Raveners, Carnies, and a really cheap piece of custom bolter fodder...

so... if its unit size... how on earth do you get winged hive tyrants if theres an upper limit on 2 HQ choices per army, and the lowest you can AFFORD to cut yourself is 4..? or does it include retinues as part of that squad too? Does a Hive Tyrant even HAVE a retinue option?

Winged Tyrants are a custom subspecies option and don't require one-off Mutations. Same goes for winged forms of everything else that can have wings. GW's beloved Pyrogaunts (Hormies with Venom Sacs for +1 S), my cheapass cannon fodder (Gaunts with Spinefists who cost five points a pop), and all manner of other things are available as custom subspecies.
The only actual Mutations I can remember are Different Weapons (relative to the rest of the brood), Hive Node (to keep your Hormies under control at greater distances), and that ever-lovin' Acid Blood.
And yes, Tyrants have a retinue option of sorts. 'S called Tyrant Guard. They can soak the Tyrant's wound for him at will.

hm. But.. I wanna field an army full of only "aliens" so... if I use a hive tyrant mutation... and only hormagaunts.. that's 2 species, meaning 50% of my army can be xenomorphs with the nasty nasty bioacid. 3nodding
