Kiro & Fae in the Centre

Kiro
Absently, Kiro pottered about in the Centre. He'd spent most of the day trying to keep Rosie and Tsu out of trouble. Together they could manage mischief that Tsu had never been able to manage on his own. Things like opening the desk drawer and tearing pages out of textbooks had been a mean feat for Tsu alone. But now he had a head to nudge things into reach... well... They both had to be kept occupied. That and the fact that Kiro had been doing a lot of reading for his new 'position' made him a little tired. Coffee, despite his obvious distaste to dealing with hot water, was becoming a firm friend of his. He just decided he'd have to be careful with that kettle...

"Keeo!"

Kiro glanced down to the hand grabbing at his trouser leg insistantly. Raising the coffee cup to his lips he murmured, "Mmmhmm?"

"Rosie's eatin' my paper!"

Blinking for a second, Kiro processed this before going to retrieve the paper from Rosie. She was a little displeased, but eventually released the paper after being offered a squeaky toy to release it.

Squeak, squeak, squeak...

An... improvement...?

Fae
Fae pushed open the familiar Centre doors, only this time with a little less effort. Zanzibar was looped around her neck, much like a young lemur clinging to its mother. Fae rubbed her eyes past her glasses, trying to wipe away the fixture light's glare. Stepping further in, her wooden sandels clanked against the hard floor. She chewed her inner lip and looked bashfully around the room for any signs of witnesses.

Zanzibar's head rose and chittered in the background. His golden yellow eyes blinked a few times, looking around at nothing. Clicking his tongue, he slithered down his gardian like a snake until his tiny nails pattered against the floor. He looked around in the air before he moved again. The sporty gryphon bounded off like a squirrel with his fluffy ringed tail bouncing along behind.

"Zen! Where are you going?" Fae cried out calmly but apprehensively. Even if it were his intention for her to follow, she chased after him anyway. "Ohh, be quiet won't you!" she muttered to her sandels as they noisely echoed.

Finally arriving to his destination, Zanzibar stopped to peer around the corner. Walking on all fours, he stepped out into the light and looked forward to the source of human noises. He wasn't that far from the door way when he gave a questioned-trill that sounded like a guiena-pig song bird.

Kiro
Squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak! Kiro was beginning to regret taking the paper from Rosie at all. C'est la vie, he supposed. He was a little confused, however, when Rosie suddenly glanced up and shot off, seemingly towards the exit. Looking after her, Kiro then spotted the source of her interest. An Aerandir was peering around the corner, one he didn't think he'd ever actually met, but knew to be Zanzibar. Reading paid off. And therefore, Fae couldn't be far behind, right?

Happily, Rosette bounded up to the new creature. She hadn't really met any other Aerandir aside from Tsu, and this was a new experience for her. She cooed excitedly upon reaching Zanzibar, her tail swishing with excitement. She nudged at him boldly with her head, being careful not to stab him with her beak. Nudge, nudge, nudge!

Fae
Zanzibar's yellow eyes widened and shreaked when he saw a smaller gryphon charging at him. Turning around and trying to high tail it out of there, his little paws slipped around the floor and got no where. The impact toppled him over and out popped his wings, tring to scramble back to his feet. He jerked his head this way and that- he was so confused! Finally feeling the soft nudges of the new gryphon, he didn't know what to do. He just sort of sat there, putting-up with the soft rubs.

Fae wasn't far behind at all. She caught herself in the door way at the last second and felt a new air under her feet. Down the hall was a subtle Crsssk! The troubled girl sighed heavily and quickly followed the sound to retrieve her missing sandel. Clap! Clap! Clap! Clap!

She was finally behind Zanzibar now and stared puzzingly downward at the other gryphon nudging him. Despite how funny Zanzibar looked, she couldn't figure out who this new little gryphon was. "Hey there little guy, where did you come from?" she asked softly, kneeling down to stroke its back, if it would let her. "Hm?" Her head rose to the sound of a mug setting down and took her a few seconds to realize who she was looking at. "Oh, hey Kiro! Is this your gryphon?" she asked with a guilty tint glowing in her cheeks.

"Chirree!?" Zanzibar flared his wings, looking wide-eyed at his guardian. He clicked his beak for attention, almost as if asking for help. Well it certainly wasn't his fault for running off!

Kiro
Kiro smiled as he approached the pair. "Yeah, she's another one of the flock." He then glanced down to address Rosie. "Rosie, honey. I don't think Zanzibar wants all this attention lavished. Calm down." He leaned down and, slipping an arm under her, pulled her back a little, giving Zanzibar a little room to breathe. "She's a little boisterous."

HeyheyheyHEY!! This was a new playmate, and Rosie wanted to say hello!! She wriggled a little, being easily released from Kiro's grip and going back to nudging Zanzibar.

"Hi Fae!" Piped up Tsu as he pattered over to them, his tail still trailing along to floor. "Where's Bobo at?"

Kiro smiled a little. He knew where Bobo was, but he hadn't mentioned it to Tsu. He glanced towards Fae, wondering if she wanted him to field the question.

Fae
Fae beamed at Rosie. "She's soo cute!" She chuckled at Zanzibar and picked him up as well. "It's alright, Zen isn't used to all the attention. He's more of a free spirit than a snuggler."

Zanzibar curled his tail around Fae's arm and sulked. He really didn't like being held, but what he didn't like the most was being cuddled and held at the same time! Disgruntled, he slipped through the bottom gap of Fae's folded arms and flew over to Kiro. His ikkle paws wrapped around his shoulder, deciding that this human wasn't going to start suffocating him. Clicking his beak in triumph a few times, he bounced from one shoulder to the other, creating his own fun. But he didn't expect human shirts to move and twist into folds until his foot was caught in one. Sqwaking as he fell down Kiro's side, he swung around the boy's hip and flew over to the couch. Ruffling his feathers and fur, he decided to sit this one out. Or at least, just until his coat was in order again.

Fae bit her lower lip as she watched all of this quickly happen. "Huh?" She looked down to a wide-smiling child. "Oh, hi there Tsu! It feels like it's been such a long time when I last saw you." She had to stop at his question and look back to Kiro. She smiled reassuringly and answered him, "Well, to tell you the truth, I don't know. She went with Acia and Nehanda somewhere, but she'll be back soon." She nodded in an ending statement, almost as if she were telling herself that as well. "But what have you been up to?"

Kiro
"Bobo's gone away?" Tsu looked at Fae for a second, wide-eyed. Bobo was probably one of his best friends. The knowledge that she'd gone away was kind of scary. Why had she gone? Where had she gone to? Did they think she'd done something bad?

Kiro could kind of sense the thoughts going through Tsu's head, or at the very least could guess what they were. "She's just gone away to do some important stuff with Handa. They'll both be back before you know it."

While this was going on, Rosie bounded after Zanzibar as he flew towards the couch. She cooed a few times as she sat on the floor, sensing that Zanzibar was perhaps not as eager to play as she was. Then, she hopped up besde him, cooing again questionningly. She wanted to play. What did he think...?

After calming Tsu a little, the little boy glanced up to Fae's question. What had he been doing...? "Ah been writing and playin' wif Rosie and stuff." He flicked the bell in his hair idly. He was still concerned with the knowledge that Bobo had gone away. When was she even coming back...?

Fae
Fae agreed with Kiro and knelt to Tsu's level, placing a hand to his shoulder. "Hey, everything's alright, okay? Cheer up. She'll be back really soon, and when she does, I'll send her your way." The girl smiled, promising that to the child.

Zanzibar watched Rosie and cocked his head to the side. Maybe she just wanted to play...? Circling around her a couple times, he pawed at her ears, then chirrped and became air born. He chirrped again, wanting her to chase him!

Fae stood back up and looked at Anakiro more realisticly. "I thought since Pueblo was nearly grown, another Aerandir wouldn't be too difficult to look after. But no one warned me about Zanzibar's high energy!" She chuckled, pointing to him in the air. "How's Rosie at your place? She looks really peacful- almost the calm type." she looked back to Kiro curiously.

Kiro
YES!! He was going to play! <3!! Cooing happily Rosie shook her head after the pawing of the ears, then spreading her wings and flapping a few times to get airbourne. It was kinda difficult, her frame along with her relatively delicate dove-wings weren't the best for flight. But if Zanzibar was going to fly, she certainly wasn't going to be left out!!

Kiro reached to pick up the still dejected Tsu and hugged him a little before answering Fae. "She's pretty nosey. And she likes to chew things," he admitted. "But she and Tsu seem to get on, which I was kinda worried they wouldn't. She's boisterous rather than energetic. How about you guys? Did your two get a chance to bond much before Bobo left?"

Fae
Fae held her hand up, beckoning Zanzibar to her as she answered Kiro. "Well at least they're growing a strong relationship." She smiled and looked to Zanzibar, lowering her guard. "Pueblo and Zen have had some time, but not nearly enough. They get along just fine, though I think he's too active for her at times."

At that moment, Zen looked up at his guardian and cocked his head. "Kreee?" His golden eyes blinked before looking over his shoulder for Rosie, holding tight to Fae's hand with his own tiny fingers.

Fae gave Zanzibar a reassuring look before flitting her eyes back to Kiro. She was still amused how he kept calling Pueblo "Bobo". But nevertheless, it made her feel secure that Pueblo had other people who loved her. "Hehe, but yeah. Abby should be home soon, so Zen and I should get back. I want everything to be ready for her arrival. Oh, and if it's alright, I'll send her over sometime?" she winked as Tsu before leaving, Zanzibar flying around Roise one last time before following his guardian.

This was a good life, Tsu mused to himself. He had a guardian that cared about him, a cute little sister (while she liked to chew things, they sort of got on), a pen, and some paper. Nothing could really go wrong.

Rosie had, for most of the morning, been sunbathing in the doorway of the Centre. Her tail swung back and forth every so often, into and out of the sunlight. Tsu wasn't too far away, sitting on the ground just outside the door, in such a way that he'd be tripped over if anyone decided to visit. And, in all honesty, Tsu wasn't sure where Kiro was today. He seemed to be nipping in and out of the Centre on various tasks of his own creation.

Tsu shook his head gently out of his daydream. He'd been writing about a little girl a the seaside. An Aerandir girl with long pretty hair. It was so easy to imagine, and such a peaceful scene. The girl hadn't even done anything yet, except be described along with the atmosphere. Early evening, cool breeze, etc etc. He was really getting into it, and almost forgetting how warm it was around about him. He glanced across to Rosie, who seemed to have stirred. Maybe it was Tsu's slight movement that had done it. She glanced up at him for a few seconds, before lethargically getting to her feet and wandering across with an almost drunken gait. She then proceeded to plop down next to him and nuzzle at him affectionately.

Grinning a little, Tsu reached across for Rosie's lump of wood. Kiro had found it and given her it after discovering that she seemed to enjoy pecking at anything wooden. Desks, chairs and pencils had been among her victims. It seemed to be taking some sort of shape, Tsu had noticed as she gripped it in her forepaws, kicked at it a little with her hindpaws, before resuming the pecking. Almost like a star or something.

Tsu tilted his head, musing a little. Was she doing that deliberately, or was it just coincidence...

But then, a sound behind him!

"Keeo!"

Kiro couldn't help grinning a little as he snapped his fingers. "Spotted!"

Hurriedly, Tsu got to his feet, his writing forgotten. "Where did ya go?"

"Just to do some stuff, Kiddo." He ruffled Tsu's hair before leaning down to pick up the lethargic, but curious, Rosie. "You two hungry for some food?"

Ahh, food. The magic word.

Kiro couldn't help but smile a little as the commotion ensued about him. It had started when Rosie had taken a liking to a pencil Tsu had been using to write with. Having already demonstrated a like of wooden (and more importantly chewable) things, she relieved Tsu of it and paraded into the other half of the room with it. And, as such, a giggling, running, and pretty loud game had begun. Kiro pushed his chair to the side a little as the pair zoomed past, Tsu's bell jingling in his hair, his tail still dragging along the ground. Rosie could be heard cooing in her throat as her wings flapped giving her a little extra speed.

Kiro watched the pair's progress quietly, smiling all the while. Rosie was proving a little destructive, to the point where they were taking walks to find her chunks of wood to chew up. And Tsu was amassing large piles of paper containing ideas, short pieces of writing, and other such scribblings, moving on quite happily with his profession.

Kiro was a little worried though, he had noticed that Tsu had been slowly developing larger handwriting and was holding the paper closer to read what he had scribbled down. He wondered idily whether...

"Oww!" Yelled Tsu suddenly, falling backwards and clutching his hands to his forehead. "Owwi~~~ee..." The short little Aerandir had managed to run straight into a wall.

Kiro picked up the small boy to give him a hug, aware that Rosie had hopped up onto Kiro's shoulder with apologetic cooing, the pencil prize having been instantly forgotten. Hitting your head wasn't much fun after all...

"Y'okay kiddo?"

"I hit ma head..."

"Does it hurt a lot?" Gently Kiro stroked the bump developing under Tsu's fur.

"Nah..." murmured the boy bravely. "Jus' surprised me was all..."

"Sure?"

"Mmhmm."

"Y'know," Kiro said, his expression thoughtful. "I wonder if you need glasses...?"

"Wassat...?"

"Like... uhh..." Kiro hesitated. He'd - amazingly - never had to wear glasses in his life, though he'd been tested several times. "They're like, bits of glass that bend light. It makes it easier for your eyes to understand what they're seeing."

Tsu looked thoughtful for a moment. "How do I get glashes?"

"I'm not sure kiddo... let me think on it, okay?"

The room was a fairly odd shape, in Rosie's opinion. It looked like it was supposed to be two rooms but they'd forgotten a door. Absently, she reached up the wall and sniffed at it gently, her beak scratching lightly as she did so. That done, she let herself down again and padded from "Tsu's room" into "Kiro's room". Her favourite place in both rooms was underneath the bed, where she had a small horde of objects hidden. She pulled herself under Kiro's bed, her tail sucking in behind her like a piece of spaghetti. She nestled for a second, her beady eyes settling on what she was looking for before reaching out for it and pulling the lump of wood towards her.

Wood, she found, had a thereputic quality. You could chip away at it until it disappeared. You could also make it into all sorts of fun shapes, long thin shapes, short fat shapes, and shapes the gryphon had yet to discover the names of. This one, a vaguely star shaped one, was her favourite. She'd spent a long time chipping away at this one. She wasn't sure why she liked it so much, but it was suspiciously nice to hug. Not with pointy corners - she'd made sure of that, but with rounded star points.

Content for the moment, she curled around her favourite bit of wood, and fell soundly asleep, gentle cooing noises betraying her presence to Kiro, who found her a half hour later.

"Cute..." he murmured quietly as he got to his feet and left her be. "Perhaps a little too cute..."

~~2006/09/18~~

It had been a lazy day, in the same way as so many days were recently. Rosie had chewed something, Tsu had written something, and Kiro had studied something. It was the kind of day when nobody really wanted to do that much of anything.

But that was the day that Rosie grew.

It was an odd feeling at first, the gryphon thought. The wood she'd been shaping suddenly fell through her beak, and when she tried to pick it up she didn't exactly get very far.

Then she began to change again - it was like something deep inside her was restless, unwilling to pause for the natural order of things. Her newly shaped wings solidified, her new hands stretched out in front of her, and her tail fwumped lightly against the doorframe as it too took shape.

It suddenly dawned on her, as she studied her new limbs fearlessly. Had she just... grown?!

Several months had passed since Rosette's unexpected growth. Kiro remembered back to the time when Tsukai had grown and they had had to go on a quest for all sorts of different items to encourage his growth. The boy's thick book, which had been given to him blank, was now almost finished. Because of this, Kiro had sent some letters to get the boy one or two more writing books. Although they were slightly thinner, they would still serve their purpose. Ink and nibs had also been sent along from the mainland, Tsukai clearly preferring his quill to a standard biro.

Kiro quietly contemplated this as he finished what he was writing. Fishing for his stapler to keep the sheets together, he decided he should go check on the kids. God knew what they were up to.

First, he went to check on Rosette. She had managed to get her hands on some larger pieces of wood from around the island and was making something behind the Centre. Quietly, Kiro wandered around, his tail swaying slightly with his pace, until he got to the back of the building. "Rosie?"

"Yeah?" The girl looked up, her wings rustling a little in surprise. "Hi, Keeo!"

Kiro smiled as he sat beside the girl. He had been surprised with how quickly her speech had come along. "Hey, Rosie. Watcha doing?"

Content with Kiro's presence, Rosie continued what she was doing, taking her knife along what was now a long thin piece of wood. Chippings covered the ground around her and her brow furrowed again in concentration. "Makin' stuff..."

Kiro took in the several other flat pieces of wood before saying, "I'm not sure... A wendy house?"

Rosie simply shook her head before looking up. "Is it okay if I keep these bits in the Centre tonight? I don't think I'monna finish today..."

"Sure sweetheart," Kiro said, reaching to stroke Rosie's hair. He watched as she continued to methodically chip away at the wood. "You trying to smooth that out?"

"Yeah..."

"I think we have some sandpaper in the Centre. That might work better."

"Wha's sandpaper?"

Kiro smiled, rising to go get some. "I'll get some and show you."

Rosie's eyes widened when Kiro returned with the sandpaper and handed it over. Instinctively, she started to rub it up and down the wood, her expression one of amazement. "Thanks Keeo!"

Kiro just smiled before saying, "No problem kiddo. Make sure to come get me when you want to bring those in, okay?"

"Sure!" she said brightly, continuing to sand the wood down.

Kiro grinned slightly. Things were going well.

~~2006/12/05~~

An early morning, and still the light shone brightly into the Centre as Kiro wandered through. He was looking for both a cup of green tea and to see if there had been any mail that day. Of course, it was near impossible for daily mail deliveries, but they seemed to be fairly sparadic. There seemed to be a new pile on one of the tables, as well as a fairly weighty looking parcel. And it seemed to be addressed to Kiro, and bore his university's logo.

Absently, the neko-jin set down his cup and, after locating a knife, he carefully slit the package open. Inside were something Kiro had seen before, a set of ridiculous-looking glasses and a full set of lenses stared back at him. Tsukai had been needing glasses for quite a while, and after pulling a few strings at the university, Kiro had managed to acquire a means of finding Tsu's perscription.

Standing from the table, Kiro meandered back though to their room to wake the boy up. Rosette had taken over the floor in Tsu's room, a materess having been laid down for her. Tsu had somehow managed to retain the bed from his loud sister. Quietly, Kiro stepped over Tsu and shook him. "C'mon kiddo, sun's out."

"Keeo...?" murmured Tsu lethargically, turning to look at his guardian, and holding out his arms to be lifted out of bed and over hs sister.

"I got a parcel today kiddo," Kiro said in explaination as he carried Tsu through the room and into the Centre. "And I think it'll be good for you."

"How...?"

Kiro sat the boy down at the table with the box on. "I wrote to the university, and they sent me a box of glasses bits," he explained. He reached into the box and took out the first piece, a thick glasses frame which would allow the lenses to be inserted and removed. "I know this looks bad," he said, "but this will tell us how thick your glasses need to be, and then we can get you an awesome pair from the mainland."

Tsu hesitated for a moment, seeming to wake up suddenly as the horrific-looking glasses were retrieved. He stared at them for a second. "But I dun haff to wear it... Do I?"

Kiro shook hs head. "Only just now. You can use it if you need to, or you can wait for your glasses to get here. Now, let me just get these on..."

After successfully getting the glasses on Tsukai's face, Kiro's next job was to make trial and error with the lenses. He started on a fairly light perscription, before quickly realising Tsu needed a stronger perscription. Heaven knows how the boy'd managed until then.

Eventually, they settled on what seemed to let Tsu see the best. The boy seemed content, as long as he got nicer looking glasses. Kiro wrote up a letter, informing them of Tsu's perscription and thanking them for the help. The box of lenses would be kept in a cupboard in the Centre, in case anyone else found a need for it.

"They say they can send the glasses back a few days from when they get the letter," Kiro assured Tsu. "I'll try and see if there's mail heading out today, okay?"

Tsu, having now fully woken up, seemed excited. Kiro couldn't tell if it was because he'd be able to see, or because he was suddenly getting all this attention. "Thanks Keeo!"

"No problem kiddo. That's what I'm here for. Now, go write a masterpiece!"

Kiro stood in the kitchen of the quiet Centre, his gaze lingering around the empty room. It was Christmas Eve, only a few hours away from the day. Tsukai and Rosette were sleeping, or so he doubted, in the joint room, leaving Kiro to contemplate the theory of the day.

In Kiro's past he had never really celebrated Christmas himself. Japanese tradition was more geared towards the New Year rather than Christmas. However, it seemed like an awesome holiday to celebrate for the kids. So Christmas it was. He was looking forward to showing them a Japanese New Year. But until then, a small tree stood in the corner of the building and the advent calender had slowly but surely been losing doors. Kiro had never seen anyone about for a while, but he suspected other Aerandir had been taking the doors off.

Smiling, Kiro picked up the two parcels from the table top, hoping Tsu and Rosie would appreciate the thought. He'd gotten them each two gifts, and wrapped them that night. He crept over and put them under the tree, intending to point the kids in that direction come the morning.
