Let's keep it simple and stick with normal classes... hmm what have changed for ranger and bards between 3.0 and 3.5?

Well, Ranger and Bards have stopped being mind-bendingly crappy. Bards got better skills, some other stuff. Rangers got a smaller HD but gained actual class abilities beyond just "favored enemy". Check the DnD SRD for 3.5 to find out exactly.
We won't be using many supplements. No psionics, no splat-books, just basic DnD world and my homebrew creations.

Rangers no longer suck in 3.5. Bards Suck less in 3.5. Rangers are sweet now though.... big fun...

And I was thinking about being a bard... sweatdrop *looks in her shiny new 3.5 handbook of new shinyness* Ok...Um...I got the book. I'm reading it an all of the online stuff I can find...but as far as a net game...what else will I need? Please try to keep it on the cheap side. This book was already 30 bucks. sad But I will get more use out of it than this....hopefully.

*nods* Dice don't cost much, and if all else fails you can probably find a dice program. *pats* I so proud of Jinnari. ^___^

The d4: Don't sit on it, cuz those pointy pyramidal thingies really hurt. I know from experience. ;-;
Hm, fighter type would be best for a beginner. Fighter, maybe barbarian or sumfin. Maybe even a paladin.
We will need to get a spellcaster though.

I'll try to take up the slack for the types we don't have yet if I can. sweatdrop
