Zach walked back from the entertainment room at a brisk pace, tail swinging along the ground behind him. He'd just returned a book he'd borrowed there, something he'd read for the sake of reading and already had forgotten the majority of. Months and months ago he had been partial to Time, Newsweek, and any other source of news from the outside world. However, his interest in keeping up with foreign affairs had rapidly declined as he lost interest in rejoining humanity.
The bottom of his feet were so calloused from all his barefoot excursions that he barely felt how hot the ground was underneath them. He followed a path he always followed, a bit of a zigzagged route back to his duplex. There was solitude there. Solitude was lovely. He had a lot to mull over.
He turned his head during a casual glance around as he walked, only to see Kikue up at the top of a duplex. Immediately he felt embarassment over what had happened the last time. He wanted to think it had been a mistake... but had he tried to attack her without realizing it? It wasn't something he was comfortable asking her. Besides, there was an easier way to find out.
"Hey, Kikue!" he called, waving to her from near the bottom of the stairs. There was a fifty-fifty chance she'd scream and run.

Kikue looked up at the sound of someone calling her name. It was... Zach?! She immediately hopped to the guardrail, staring over the edge with her blook clutched in one of her paws. She broke into a concerned smile. "Hi!" she called back enthusiastically. He looks okay!
That revelation hit her immediately, as did the memory of the last time she'd seen him. It didn't matter as much, though, since he seemed to be in one piece. Had it really just been his chip?
She gestured to him to come up to the landing of her duplex, plainly happy to see him.

Immediate relief crossed his face at her lack of fear. Maybe it had just been a fluke after all, and he'd gotten flustered over nothing. If only it hadn't hurt that much...
After a quick glance around for a certain snake, he clambered up to meet Kikue. His tail weaved over the steps as he climbed, and hung over several of them when he reached the little space in front of the second story of the duplex. His wings appeared weakly open, like he'd just stopped himself from flapping them as he'd taken on the stairs. He owed her an apology for the incident with his chip. While he spoke he was extremely careful not to let his tongue slip into the old habit of hissing every letter S. "Hey, I'm sorry about what happened a couple days ago."

Kikue smiled softly, leaning on the guardrail with her arms, the book still clutched in a paw. "It's all right," she said, taking in a deep breath of the air through her nose. She flicked her tail out behind her, feeling in a good mood. "I was worried about that...I still don't really know what happened..." She straightened up from the railing. "Are you okay? Did they...take you to the labs?"
She still remembered discussing it with Nita. Was it the chip itself? And what if it happens to other people...I wonder if it's fixed...

"So have you been okay?" he asked. "You know, with your instincts."
"I'm fine, I just had a little headache. But... I don't know if they did." Worse than the thought of an entire chunk of time missing from his life was how easily they could remove that time without him ever knowing. It was one of a small handful of things the labs did that he found objectionable. He shrugged. Why question it if nothing bad had happened this time? "I guess it was a fluke or something. Nothing to worry about."

"I'm doing okay with them." She continued to swing her tail behind her. "I'm trying to make sure I keep myself fed...but I know that the chip works, so it can stop me from doing anything if for some reason I get carried away..." Kikue tried not to think about that. She knew there was no guarantee if she ate that she wouldn't try something if a situation presented itself -- it was that uncertainty that unnerved her. She had always had complete control of herself before; of her emotions, and how she acted in front of other people. Now she could never be sure. But I...have to try and be as sure as I can. For Nita...for any people that have to be around me.
She moved the book to her other paw, pushing her whitened hair back from her face. She was careful not to let the claws catch. "I was worried...because of the reaction you had. I woke up back in my duplex...someone must have brought me there." Another space of time where she had no idea might have happened to her. Just like the labs and her last change. She shook off the feeling. Blinking, she scratched the back one of her ears just to focus on something else. The claws were sharp, but the fur was thick... "It seemed like...your chip malfunctioned. I visited Nita after I woke up...I'm not sure if you know her? She wasn't sure what happened, either..."

"That's good. Just do whatever you can." He grinned jokingly." You'll save yourself a lot of emotional trauma this way."
"Weird... it was probably for the best though." He leaned on the railing next to her, gripping it with his mismatched hands. "I'm sure whatever happened to me was nothing serious. If you want, I can ask about what happened."
"Nita... yeah, we've met." He tried to disguise his dislike of the person associated with the name, but his expression and tone were a little less friendly when he talked about her. "But hey, technology has its problems. At least it only happened to me and not anyone else."

Kikue watched him as he looked over the railing. He seemed so calm about it... 'At least it was only him, and not anyone else.' What about Annie... Kikue buried the thought as quickly as she could. She focused instead on Zach's change in tone when he mentioned Nita. Raising an eyebrow, she turned her back to the guardrail and leaned back against it, smiling a little secretively. "Are you friends with her?"

Thinking about the weird zap was just too exhausting for him. A malfunctioning chip was one such thing that was better off back to working smoothly than pondered heavily about. Broken chip? Good thing it was fixed. Zach tried to avoid thoughts that led to conflicts of interest for him. Like a coward, he wanted to just enjoy what he had now, and hopefully ignore the… circumstances… around his scaly fate. Mentally he fretted over answering her question. He flapped his wings once out of the awkwardness of the situation. He really didn’t know Nita. All he knew was that she’d been in the wrong place at the wrong time twice, and their feelings toward each other were mutually negative. “No, we’ve just… met.” “So,” he said suddenly, in an attempt to steer the conversation elsewhere, “How’ve you been passing the time?”

"Ah, I see." Kikue blinked slowly. A thin smile tugged at the corner of her mouth, and she held up the book she had been reading. "I've been trying to read, mostly..." She paused there, knowing the other task that had begun to occupy her time only recently. She had meant to tell Zach about it earlier...except for the fact that the chip had interrupted that conversation before it had even started. Examining the cover of her book, Kikue ran a paw over the it. Thoughtfully, she shifted on her feet. "I've also been working on something with Nita...I met to tell you about it before, when you were talking about the labs. I thought it would be helpful." Kikue raised an eyebrow. She turned around again, back to facing the railing. Leaning a bit over it, she began to describe the program she was working out. "It's a database. I created it when I first came here...files on each person I met.
"What their serum was...where they were from. What the labs told them to get them here...things that the labs already know, but that none of us do about anyone else... I thought it would be good, to create a catalog like that, for everyone to be able to use... "I told Nita about it...she wanted to help. So we are making surverys and going to give them to each person, to fill in the database." Kikue faced Zach again, tilting her head. She looked proud, but also curious, waiting to see his reaction.

“A database?” he repeated, interested. Now that he thought about it, there was very little he knew about most of the people on the island. Everyone here was a stranger, in some sense, uprooted from whatever life they knew. He’d rarely shared his own past, which with every day seemed more and more distant and shameful. The possibilities for information like that were limitless, and not all necessarily noble. “What were you planning to do with it, once you get information from everyone? I mean, I’m sure it’d be useful.”

Kikue was glad to see Zach's interest in the project. Since Nita was the only other person who knew, she hadn't been sure how other people would react. She toyed with the book in her paws, cheerful. "I was thinking we could use it as a kind of directory for everyone. That way we could almost 'send mail' to each other in the village, and before visiting someone a person could know a little more about them, like their serum. Knowing that might even stop a few dangerous situations."
She sighed, flipping the pages of her book carefully with a claw. "It would need to be easily updated though, and regularly, so it stands to reason that it should remain electronic but...not everyone has a computer. So I'm not completely sure on all the details yet." She adjusted her shirt, fanning it a little in the muggy air. Gods it was hot outside.

"It would probably help new people even more than it'd help all of us who've been here for a while." Zach looked away from her and toward the jungle when she mentioned 'dangerous situations', feeling a little guilty.
"Yeah, that could be a problem. I know I didn't bring my laptop with me when I came here, so I'll have to get a new one if I want to use this database." Zach hardly reacted to the heat any more. As far as he could tell, he wasn't cold blooded despite there being a lot of reptile to his serum, but he definitely preferred heat to cold now. It was Kikue's unease that alerted him to the possibility that the tropical weather didn't agree with her. Instantly he blurted out a question with an easy answer. "Hey, are you okay?"

"Nita didn't bring a computer either, so I'm not sure what to do about that. I don't think the labs will provide them willingly, and it defeats the purpose by asking." She continued to fan with her shirt, her ears low.
"Hmm?" Kikue asked, slightly distracted. Without any control at all, her mouth suddenly fell open, and she began panting. Aware of what she was doing, she tried to stop herself without any result. She rubbed a paw on her neck. "It's nothing...just hot out here...I rarely go outside anymore for long periods, but I get restless..." She kept up the panting, feeling thoroughly embarrassed that the conversation was now focused on her. She tried to think of some other part of the project to bring up, but her mind felt muddled.
...The surveys...
"...Maybe, you'd like to take a survey for the database?" Kikue gestured to the door to her duplex. She knew she was putting herself into another situation by extending an invitation to someone to come into her room...the instinct of it being an invasion of her territory felt like madness. But it was so strong. She had to try and shake it, just this once. I don't think I can stay out here much longer...I don't feel so good.

"Hm. I'll see what I can do." Admittedly, Zach was curious about the sort of information he could glean from a database like this, and the information he could spread. People such as Rex, Gaius, and the cobra all infuriated him at the thought of their attacks and insults. With Sabin's willingness to exact revenge on two of them, he'd grown bolder. As he hadn't yet heard from Sabin about what had happened to Rex and the cobra, he wanted to get some sort of revenge on them through his own means. An opportunity like this was beyond perfect - he wouldn't even have to get near them, and he could show that he wasn't Sabin's "pet", if only to himself.
"Is it the heat?" He stared worriedly as she panted. "I think you should go inside again. You look a little faint."
"A survey? Oh, sure." From her gesture, he guessed these surveys were in her duplex. Zach let go of the guardrail and walked over to the door and opened it. A blast of air conditioning greeted him, sending a shiver down his tail. He moved to the side to let Kikue go in first, gripping the door with a clawed hand.
