Alec slugged down the rest of his soda and nodded with a full mouth, leaving the empty can on any available flat surface nearby. "Don' 'ave too much fun without me." He mumbled and snickered as he shoved his feet into his muck-covered boots once again. Pausing by the doorway, he gave a short wave.
"You're a wild wom'n Girleh! Crazeh!" He yelled back to the red-head, if not for the wide grin on his face, it could've been taken as being serious. Shaking his head, he shut the door behind and adopted a lazy stride into the jungle.

Nita snorted and flipped Alec off in a playful manner. "Don't worry, I won't!" she called after him.
With Alec gone, Nita settled back into the serious business of cleaning the bathroom and the mess Alec had made just by taking a few steps into her duplex.

Nita stood in the bathroom, hands on her hips, inspecting her handiwork. Her muddied jeans hung over the shower rod, as clean as she could get them. She really needed to do a couple loads of laundry, but she had essentials washed and hanging up to dry. The floor and walls were now free of the mud she had missed during the initial cleaning, done in the half-light produced by the generators. In fact, the small room was probably cleaner than it was when Nita moved in. She nodded with the satisfaction of a job well done.
She was startled by the sudden hissing and crackling of the intercom unit in the front room. Just as she went over to inspect it, a voice broadcast through the loudspeaker.
Hello my precious subjects,
If you didn't already know, my second-in-command, Dr. Aubrey Lockheart was severly injured recently. She may not survive.
No one but Aubrey has entered the labs since the travesty, and no one else is allowed to, so the guilty party must be on the outside.
Bring me the guilty party, or else you'll all suffer for this. I hope no more than that needs to be said.
If you are the responsible party, know that all eyes will turn to you. You can't escape the eyes of those you might have considered friend, or even lover.
I want the person responsible to be brought to me.
What? Dr. Lockheart was hurt, presumably by one of her fellow Islanders? Nita shook her head slowly and sat down. It must have happened during the storm... was that why she'd been zapped unconscious? Had it happened to others? At least the weird tingling had stopped... Nita had had a rough couple of days. What she needed was information. Especially if Moreau was going to punish everyone if the offender wasn't taken to him. Ugh. Hopefully people wouldn't jump to conclusions and go off on some sort of witch hunt. But sitting there like a lump wasn't going to fix anything. Nita stood, put on a fresh shirt, and splashed some water on her face. Feeling more human than she had since this whole ordeal began, she left her duplex. Maybe others in the village would know more than she did.

Annie Adds to the Weirdness Angharad Anderson Angharad peered around the door of the cafeteria, eyes curious and slightly too bright. Her clothes and hair were messy, and the brief scrubbing of her hand across her face had not obliterated completely the traces of tears. But the challenge was here. To find out things that the announcement has talked about... and to awaken from the dream, safe home at last.
"Afternoon," She called out cheerfully as she came further in, a small part of her suddenly experiencing a thrill of excitement. What if the killer was hiding here? She hadn't thought of that.... Nita MacNeal A moment later, Nita walked through the same door. There was usually at least one person about at this time of day, and besides, Nita was hungry. "Annie!" she called out, making her way quickly through the buffet line. She hadn't seen her neighbor much lately, and she approached the girl with a smile. "I see you made it through the storm okay..?" Angharad Anderson Angharad nodded, eyes still slightly glazed in their cheerfulness. "Hello, Nita." She smiled warmly. "Yes, the storm was something... I'm glad the power came back though. But, but, did you hear that announcement?" Annie looked slightly scared for a moment. "I can't believe someone finally went crazy..." Nita MacNeal Nita was somewhat taken aback by Angharad's glazed-over expression. There was something.. not right. She was too cheerful, almost manic. Nita smiled more carefully and sat down with her plate. "I just heard," she said. "That's why I'm here, to see if anyone knows anything." Going crazy? Nita thought, eyeing Annie. Oh, I'd believe it... She rubbed her arm, wincing as she touched the blossoming bruise around the needle-mark. Angharad Anderson Annie looked at Nita's movement curiously, not really taking it in. "Me too... I saw Fiona, but I still don't know some things... like, did you get zapped this morning?" Her voice is a little hesitant, and she brushes some of the tangles from her face irritably. "Just after the power came back on.. I don't understand what I did to deserve it..." Nita MacNeal So Fiona was okay, too. Good. Nita still wasn't happy with how their last encounter had gone. No time for that, though. She prodded her sandwich with her fork and nodded. "Yeah. Maybe there was some power surge? Because of the storm, and the power coming back like that..." Nita shrugged. At least the zapping hadn't really hurt all that much, although she certainly wasn't looking forward to it happening again. "I know I didn't do anything to warrant it, so I'm guessing it was some kind of mistake." Angharad Anderson "Mmm, that's what I thought too.. that something had messed up at the labs with the power..." Anghard picked a carrot randomly and sat down beside Nita, eating it absently. "But then I heard this announcement... " She leaned forward, looking conspiritorial. "Perhaps... maybe it's because they don't know who hurt that Lockheart woman, and just mass-zapped everyone? That's why I wanted to ask someone else about it..."
She was yielding results already. She'd have this challenge solved soon, for sure. Nita MacNeal "Everything's definitely been weird these past few days.. and not just the storm." Nita paused and scratched at her arm again. She was a bit embarrassed, but... Annie had been zapped, too, so maybe something similar had happened to her. "Did you.. sleepwalk or anything a couple nights ago? Or wake up where you know you didn't go to sleep?" Angharad Anderson Angharad looked sideways thoughtfully, finishing her carrot. "Not me, not yet... why, did that happen to you?" He bright face looked more concerned, and she finally noticed the fact that Nita kept rubbing her arm uncomfortably. "But you know... it's probably nothing to worry about..." She said carefully. Nita MacNeal Nita bit back a sarcastic reply along the lines of, ' No, I just randomly ask people if they've ever woken up without any idea of how they got there. But this was Annie, and she was only adding to the general atmosphere of "WTF Is Going On?" "Um. Yes. I went to bed Thursday night after taking a walk on the beach, and when I woke up, I was most certainly not in my bed. I was not in my duplex. I was not in the village." Nita paused again to breathe and calm down. She'd been trying hard not to think about this. "I was in the jungle, Annie! And I kept spazzing out! I was paranoid as hell, and I don't know why." Nothing to worry about, indeed. Angharad Anderson Angharad looked more concerned, and put her hand on Nita's shoulder carefully. "That... is quite scary." Her voice was low, and even that fact had trickled slightly through her bemused veneer. "Out in the jungle... that's a long way to sleepwalk." Her face was unhappy as she looked again at Nita. "And no-one else you've asked has had it happen to them? I mean, what if the zappy chip things can control you a little as well...." She wasn't picking up on other people's emotions well enough at the moment to notice quite how distraught the redhead was over this. Nita MacNeal Nita flinched at the touch. What on Earth was wrong with Annie? "Look, I don't know how I got out there. I've never sleepwalked in my whole life, and the chip thingy zapped me long after I'd got back home." She sighed. Maybe this wasn't such a great idea. Annie and Alec both seemed pretty clueless. "You're the only person I asked," she said. "I only talked to Alec for a couple minutes earlier, and he already thinks I'm whacked in the head. Or that I've got a stick up my butt." Nita groaned and rested her head in her hands. Angharad Anderson Angharad hung her head a little. "I'm sorry. But I don't think you're 'whacked in the head'. I think something really weird is going on around here," and her face showed determination. The challenge was obviously becoming clearer...
"Perhaps.. perhaps I'm not the best person to talk to right now...." Her face became more unhappy. "I have a lot of things on my mind... I'm probably not coming across quite right..." In fact, there were the strains of glee in her mind, inspired by the hope of waking up from the dream. And Nita didn't look like the sort of person that needed glee right now, even if she might be made up. Or perhaps Nita was dreaming too? Angharad's mind threatened to backfire if she thought about that too much, and she shook her head firmly. "I'm going to find out what's going on. I don't want to help them," and she jerked her thumb in the vague direction of the laborotories, "but find out what's been happening to people."
She stood up, face set. "I want to help, Nita." Her voice was clear and even, even if she was acting like a bad film heroine. Nita MacNeal Nita calmed down a bit. Getting annoyed with Annie wasn't going fix anything, even if the girl herself was only compounding the weirdness. Nita had always thought of her as being so stable and sensible... Of course, people had thought that about Nita. Looking up at Annie, she nodded mutely. After a moment, she said, "Finding out would be good. It's all got to be connected, somehow." Although she was a bit dubious about Annie's sleuthing abilities at the moment, she continued, "Please let me know if you find anything out?" Nita took a few half-hearted bites of her sandwich. It seemed she wasn't so hungry anymore. Angharad Anderson Angharad nodded vigourously. "I'll tell you. I know the announcement said don't trust anyone, but you know, I know you didn't do anything. Just like me and Fee didn't. So I'll tell you what I find, okay?"
As she left the cafeteria purposefully, she took an apple, and munched it thoughtfully as she wandered off into the village. For some reason she'd already forgotten that she said she'd meet back up with Fiona in the cafeteria. There was finding out to be done.... Nita MacNeal "Thanks," Nita said softly. Annie might be messed up right now, but she was a smart girl, and Nita couldn't see her hurting anyone. Nita nibbled idly at her sandwich and stared off into space... Emerwyn Emerwyn Emerwyn did not leave her duplex until that evening, when hunger regretably forced her out. She was petrified, and completely shaken. Too many terrible memories of the last black-out swarmed her mind as she moved slowly toward the cafeteria. All of the sweet memories - of seeing Ian, loving Ian - were gone. One thing she knew, she had to find him. Maybe he knew what was going on. Being out under the partially clear sky made Emerwyn feel rather exposed. There was a slight jerk in her step as she walked, and her eyes darted easily from side to side. Walking on her hooved feet had become much easier in the past weeks, and once she saw the light of the cafeteria, she slid once again, into her easy, smooth stride. An even greater calm came over her as she entered safely, taking a simple salad (with the neccessary black olives) and began to search for a place to sit. Nita MacNeal Nita was vaguely aware that someone had entered the cafeteria, and that the someone didn't look familiar. Making a monumental effort, Nita raised a hand in a wave. Perhaps this new person (who, by her visible changes, had clearly been on the island longer than Nita) would be of more help than Alec or Annie. "Hey," Nita said quietly, meeting the stranger's eyes. "You want to have a seat?" Emerwyn Emerwyn smiled at the newcomer, slipping out of a daze. She was only momentarily conscious of her appearance, but the girl didn't seem to mind it so much. She set down her dinner, and carefully pulled out a chair with her grace-bestowed thumb. "My thanks. I am Emerwyn." Her voice had become naturally quiet. She had not as of yet discovered if she could raise it above a soft shout. Nita MacNeal "I'm Nita," she said, returning the smile. "And no problem, the place is a bit empty just now." Nita glanced around and made a few more attempts at her sandwich. Her appetite was returning now that she wasn't so disturbed by Annie's mannerisms. It was almost funny to think that a strange and quiet girl who was partly turned into an animal could be less disturbing than anything. Emerwyn The girl looked innocent, if perhaps a little uncomfortable. I suppose it only makes sense, Emerwyn thought. "Nita," Emerwyn repeated. "Lovely to meet you. Though, I am sorry that you find yourself here." She shifted her seating as she picked steadily at her salad. Carefully, she chose her words. "Odd... Strange happenings. Of course, it is hard to judge the strange from the norm-" She cast her eyes up to Nita. "-in situations such as these." Nita MacNeal "Nice to meet you, too," Nita replied automatically. If anything, she was polite. "How long have you been here?" she asked. "Ugh, entirely too strange," Nita echoed. She gave Emerwyn an appraising look and a half-laugh. "Try me," she said drily. Emerwyn Emerwyn thought hard. What month was it - April? No, May. Her birthday was in April. She'd completely forgotten that she'd turned twenty-four. "Just over half a year..." her voice was dazed. It was not really so much time, after all. Emerwyn grinned at Nita, her odd face and the dim lighting making it look a little eerie. She liked Nita. She had spirit. "-But, such violence... This is relatively new. I can't help but feel frightened. I should be surprised that this has never happened before now... but perhaps I'm still not quite used to my life." Nita MacNeal "Geez," Nita muttered. "It's been just about a month for me, if I've been keeping track properly." And she had been, she was sure, as long as she had only been buzzed unconscious overnight. Her own birthday was only 2 weeks away. "I was almost used to it. Or at least, I'd almost convinced myself I was used to it." Nita grinned back, the expression lighting up her face. Emerwyn Emerwyn saw a sharp difference in the two girls' faces. And not only in their physical appearance. Nita's had not yet been completely tainted by this world. But she was not naive. Emerwyn knew nothing of the world she'd come from when she arrived. How would she view that world if she were to escape? She'd probably never know... "I wonder, if I may ask - what - or should I say, do you, know anything? About what's happened these past couple of days? I could not help but to shut myself away. The fear of our last travesty was still too near." Nita MacNeal "I don't know much... just what happened to me." Nita made a face and finished her sandwich quickly so she wouldn't speak with her mouth full. "I woke up in the jungle, before the storm. I don't know how I got there. And I think I might have gone a bit crazy for a while." She flushed and touched the mark on her arm. "But I came back to the village, and then there was the huge storm, and the power went out... And when it came back, the microchip thing they use must have gone off." Nita shrugged, remembering the unpleasant tingling that had gone through her entire body. "I woke up today, just before that announcement." She watched Emerwyn during her brief summary, almost hoping for a glimmer of recognition. She couldn't have been the only person who had walked in her sleep or.. whatever had happened. Emerwyn In the jungle... That's where Emerwyn found herself last time. With Ian. Where was Ian? Why hadn't he come to see her? She quickly shoved this worry away momentarily and set her mind on what Nita was saying. "...microchip?" Emerwyn reached to the back of her neck. The pain that had knocked her out now twice. "Oh..." How did she not think that they had something like that placed in them... It made her feel slightly stupid, and very uncomfortable. "You woke up in the jungle? Interesting. At least the power is still up..." Emerwyn thought a moment, about Moreau's message. Aubrey Lockheart. "From what I've heard, she was a very sweet person. One of the only people on the staff we may be able to refer to as 'kind.' I suppose," Emerwyn continued. "It was only a matter of time before something like this happened. He's breeding monsters. Carnivores. The things this is doing to our mind..." A chill travelled slowly and menacingly up her back.

Interruption and Injection Island of Moreau The sound of a vehicle approaching then shutting down was heard outside. The door to the cafeteria opened as three guards walked in there. One of them marched at the front of the three, all of them appeared to be armed with high-powered rifles. The guard that seemed to be at the head of the two others, appeared to have a couple of black stripes on his shoulder. He looked slightly older than the other two as well. He was also carrying a silver metal caseing by a handle. "Ms. MacNeal?" he said boldly. Nita MacNeal Nita was just about to respond to Emerwyn when the guards arrived. She stood up automatically, holding onto the table. Those were definitely rifles. Three armed guards. As if a hundred-pound girl could (or would even try) to take them down. "Y-yes..?" she stammered. "Is there.. Is there something I can help you with?" Nita glanced at Emerwyn, confused and a bit frightened. Emerwyn Emerwyn remained in her seat, her body tensed. Her gaze shifted from Nita to the guards, and back. She was frightened for her new friend, but what if she had done something? ... No, no, it was only the atmosphere that made her feel so suspicious. She did not speak, only waited, on the edge of her seat. A familiar feeling returned to her, ready to jump up and get her and Nita out of there if anything should happen. Island of Moreau "We are here on orders to issue you your injection. Please don't cause any trouble ma'am." The lead guard snapped his fingers as one of the other guards stood by the door blocking anyone from getting in or out. The other guard kept his gun at the ready. The lead guard walked over to the table, and sat down the silver case. He typed in a numerical code and touched a thumb pad and it snapped open. A needle gun and the serum tube already loaded into it. "Roll up your sleeve ma'am." Nita MacNeal The injection. So.. what had the other injection been? Her hand moved automatically to the bruise already gracing her upper arm. Her heart beat hollowly in her ears. "Oh," Nita whispered, trying not to panic. Eyes wide, she sank back into her seat, holding out her arm. There was no need to roll up a sleeve, since she was wearing a tanktop. But whatever. It was probably standard procedure. Right. Three armed guards. That doctor.. Duvert? had said that injections were usually administered to a sleeping subject. Nita supposed that was different, if the labs were locked up tight. All of this flew through her mind, though her body was numb. Emerwyn Emerwyn automatically started up as she willingly, if reluctantly offered her arm to the guards. Then, she looked at their guns. It didn't seem that she had a choice. Half-standing, Emerwyn leaned on the table, her face stern and frightened. This wasn't right. What injection? She saw Nita touch the small bruise on her hand. She'd already received one. What was all this? Her hands tensed on the table as the scene carried on. Island of Moreau The guard walked up to Nita and he took the gun, placed it against her arm as the serum was quickly and uncomfortably injected into her bloodstream. Then when the vial had emptied he took the gun away, put it back in the case and nodded his head. "Thank you ma'am. That should kick in shortly, find somewhere comfortable to be." He nodded his head and then walked out the door with the rest of them, the one by the door keeping his body faced to Nita and Emerwyn until the other two were gone, then he turned and got into the jeep they'd started. It was gone in an instant. Nita MacNeal Nita winced at the pinch, almost reaching out for Emerwyn's hand (hoof..) to hold. And then it was over, and the guards were gone. Nita's hands shook and she stared at Emerwyn. "I think I'm gonna go," she whispered. "I'm sorry..." Emerwyn As soon as the guards began to leave, Emerwyn rushed to Nita's side. Emerwyn's eyes widened in concern, and she took her hands. "Don't worry," Emerwyn whispered. "I'll take you home." She began to help her up. "Where is your duplex?" Nita MacNeal Nita stood, shaking, clinging to Emerwyn. "Number 42," she managed. "It's just across the way." She felt light-headed, and if she couldn't feel the hardened keratin of Emerwyn's hands against her palms, she would have thought she was trapped in a dream. A nightmare. But no, reality came crashing down. Emerwyn "Alright," Emerwyn said, still softer. "Now, try not to speak anymore. I'll get you back alright. Lean on me." Slowly, she made her way out of the cafeteria. It took her a moment to figure out where duplex 42 would be. There were so many now. But, make it they did, and Emerwyn opened the door for Nita to enter.

Nita leaned on Emerwyn, overwhelmingly glad that her duplex wasn't far away. The door was unlocked, and opened to reveal a remarkably clean room. Nita made her way to the bed and sat down, sinking against her pillows. Not caring if she seemed immature, Nita reached for her teddy bear and held on tight.
"Would you stay? I don't mean to be a bother..."

Emerwyn moved to tuck her into the covers. She crouched a moment at Nita's side. "Of course I will stay. You just rest. I will get you some water."
She got up and turned to fetch a glass of water. Every duplex being so frighteningly identicle, this was no difficult task.

"Thank you," Nita muttered. She had a friend. Even though they had barely met, Nita honestly liked Emerwyn and knew that not just anyone would take care of a near-stranger.
She accepted the cup gratefully and took a sip. "I think I might be starting a fever," Nita whispered. "There's ibuprofen over the sink... Please," she added belatedly.

Emerwyn smiled. She was glad to befriend Nita. The effect was symbiotic.
Quickly, she once again rose to fetch the medicine. She did not believe in these kind of relief medicines, but whatever it took to make her feel better. Emerwyn propped up Nita's pillow as she handed her two pills.

Nita smiled back, still feeling like she was taking advantage of such kindness. She swallowed the pills with the ease of long practice. Emelyn had told her the changes hurt, and hopefully the ibuprofen would kick in before she felt much worse. Everything seemed a bit fuzzy and Nita twitched occasionally. She thought she might be hearing voices, or maybe she really was asleep. But what was the dream? The voices, the images at the edges of her vision? Her tucked into bed, carefully tended by a deer-woman? Snuggling with Lauren? Hiding in trees in the jungle? She shivered under the blankets, pleading with whatever higher power there might be (even if that power was only Moreau) for this all to be over soon. Emerwyn Emerwyn perched upon the edge of the bed, ever so lightly, so as not to disturb Nita. Gently, she stroked her hair and began to hum. The notes formulated into words. Here, may you find peace now In a world of hate The world has all turned dark now But, look beyond your eyes The night is full of secrets It does not want to hide Just ask it for the answers And you shall find your light. "The night is not so frightening," Emerwyn whispered, mostly to herself.

After a few hours, and some bouts of your entire body feeling uncomfortable you start to feel... itchy. As you reach to scratch between your neck and chest you feel the peach fuzz fur that appears to be growing in. You notice the fur is a shade of red, not quite the same as your hair, but red none-the-less. You feel a burning, scretching sensation in your ears even as they grow long and you realize they are becomming slightly more accute. Sounds seem clearer, but that isn't all. You realize you can smell things better as well, you feel a tingling spread across your upper lip and lower nose. When you reach up to touch it you feel the black, wet, tip at the bottom of your own nose. You notice that the fur has continued to grow, very very thin over most of your body, but thick in certain places, such as your hands, your back, above your chest. You see your own finger and toe nails darkening. You feel distinctly, different. Your body craving distinctly different things. For some reason a craving for bamboo crosses your mind. Of course other fruits sound good as well, the transformation having taken a lot out of you. For a brief moment, a thought crosses your mind that it'd be safer up in a tree. The red panda instincts that you aren't as safe down here crossing your still mostly human mind. Though you realize, that deep down, instinctively, you don't feel human anymore.

The fever seemed to go higher, despite the ibuprofen. Nita pushed the covers off, only to pull them back up as she shivered harder. A faint prickling distracted her from the temperature; she scratched her neck. It itched only a little at first, but the itch grew in magnitude. Her entire body tickled and she scratched again, gently. After a few minutes, the itch was worse than the summer she'd acquired mosquito bites all over her arms and back, worse than the smear of poison ivy on her leg. She knew that aloe wouldn't help this itch, though, as she watched soft reddish fur emerge from her fair skin.
Nita could have sworn someone had the tips of her ears in a vise-grip and had decided to pull on them. She breathed heavily through her mouth until that began to hurt as well. Her nose and lip stung, and she could smell Emerwyn across the room. Her eyes watered from the pain. If the process hadn't been so uncomfortable, Nita would have been fascinated.
More fur spread across her body and she watched as her fingernails darkened. Nita felt the same strangeness in her feet and pulled off her socks, only to find her toenails the same dark grey.
She lay back, exhausted, wishing she had eaten more than that sandwich in the cafeteria. There was fruit on top of the minifridge; she eyed it hungrily. It wasn't precisely what she wanted, but it would have to do for now. Nita was nervous again, wanting to get above the ground as she had just before the storm.
And finally, the itching and the pain stopped. Nita scratched herself hesitantly and reached up to feel her elongated ears and wet, black nose. She reached out for Emerwyn, seeking comfort and reassurance.

Emerwyn held her as she could during the terrifying experience. She felt so helpless. The only other transformation she had witnessed was her own. This was very difference. The only way she knew what Nita was going through was her own painful memories. She ran out to get a wet cloth from the bathroom. Carefully, she tried to dab Nita's forehead. Still, she did not know what to do. Perhaps, perhaps it was best to simply wait. Let her tough it out on her own. She sat back on a chair, her eyes cast down, and away.
When it was over, for how much it could be, she was back at Nita's side. "I will go now," Emerwyn agreed. Nita needed the time alone. She placed the wet cloth in Nita's hand. "You will be fine. And remember, I will always be here. My room is eighteen. Any time, any time at all, you can come to me." She smiled, and stroked her hair again, before slowly rising and heading toward the door.
"Fare thee well."

Nita nodded meekly, exhausted. The washcloth had helped, even though it might have been more Emer's presence that soothed her than the water.
"Eighteen," she echoed, her mind filing that away for further use despite her condition. "Thank you for being here..." Nita attempted a smile, but the muscles in her face ached.
Emerwyn left Nita alone. Alone with her thoughts and the new instincts that tinged them. She rolled over in bed, clutching her bear to her now-fuzzy chest, and buried her odd, pale face in her pillow.
