I say it's face 'paint'.
I drew Kai's triangles on my friend once with a blue marker. After the sleepover the marks ended up on her hand. It was hysterical lol

I'd have to say paint because I've seen parts in the manga where he's puttting it on and I've seen episodes where he's not wearing it. But considering all the rain and stuff that he's gone through and it didn't come off and smear it has to be some pretty durable and strong paint. It almost makes me wonder what he uses..........

I would most definitely say it's paint.
Having a child tattoo his face in a child's anime doesn't really make sense.
You see him apply the face paint in the manga marking that day onwards as a new person and as stated he takes it off in V-Force.
I don't see why he would go through the painful procedure of having it removed just for school only to have it quickly tattooed back on again for when he left the school.
In Japan aren't tattoos a negative social stigma in any case? (still these days.)

-- Zloy Serebro -- is right; tatoos in Japan are generally associated with the Yakuza. Besides, no Japanese tatooist in his right mind would do such a simple design as triangles on someone's face; they pride themselves on the intricacy of their patterns and the fluidity of the colors and such (the method they use is quite different from that used in Western tatooin - I hear it's much more painful)...
And I say it's face paint. There's this brand that doesn't wash off as easily as others, although I forgot the brand's name. But I've tried it once, during a cosplay thing my sister and I had with a friend; it was only at our house, though (Davao hasn't heard of anime conventions yet. And yes, I was Kai that day. And I still have my scarf (only I didn't name it Joe). whee

well...alot say that he painted it on because he was the leader of the Beysharks ryt? i guess it could be face paint or war paint...it is a possibility that it is paint because Kai afterall removed it when he went to Whitney Prepschool in season 2 V-force and then when a few days after he met Tyson, he reapplied them..so i guess its evidence that its paint.. see? no paint... then TADA! paint! blaugh ... sweatdrop
