Inspiration ::: A mix of how I played Golden my first time and how he behaves in the anime and Dancing All Night. He's a silent protagonist in the game, while he speaks in the anime and all spin-off games after, so I pull a lot of how he talks in those for how I write what he says.
In Golden, you have choices that can shape his outcome a little bit. There are a lot of people he can speak to, a lot of activities he can do, that you'll never get everything done in a single playthrough ever. I focused a lot on his connections with his friend group that would accompany him into each dungeon, his Uncle, and his cousin. I wasn't able to completely finish his Uncle and cousin's confidants, but I did max out his team members. You can also choose to romance one or multiple girls, though choosing more than one will end badly for you. I romanced Naoto and only Naoto, so my Yu was faithful, loyal, and monogamous. I choose all the options that let her be whoever she wanted to be, without the pressure of having to change for me because I loved her as she is. You can also garden, fish, and read a lot of books, which I have also included in the Kitsu's activities. Not that I had any time for anything but the garden to get ingredients to cook for his friends. I maxed out all five of his stats by the end and he was top of his class, hence he's also pretty intelligent. Which he's shown to be in both anime and other games when he wants to be.
In the anime, his dialogue is extremely goofy. In the game, you are sometimes presented with a choice in response. There is usually always a silly response, which is what the anime seemed to pick most as his reactions to certain things. He was very stoic, calm, and composed, with a constant calm tone of voice that made you very unsure if he's serious or just bullshitting. Naoto once commented that he was very hard to read, always threw her off, and treated everything as a very important matter, no matter if it's solving a case or a giant beef bowl too large for a single person to possibly consume. To which he answered "Life is a series of major events."
Yu has always come off as someone who is extremely helpful to those around him even at the cost of himself and very willing to try anything at least once.

Upon first meeting Yu, one may think him to be a bit intimidating. Being tall and always having a stoic expression on his face, he is a difficult Kitsu to read. Even when he opens his mouth, he is difficult to get a reading on. Where speaking can help you understand a Kitsu more, it only seems to make Yu harder to understand. He's weird. He rarely smiles or shows much of an expression and when he does talk, he says things in an odd manner or just bluntly makes comments about something around him. His jokes and teases often go over the head because it's so hard to tell when he's being serious and when he's just joking. Maybe it's both. Who really knows. If you were to ask him, he'd give you a cryptic answer, anyway.
In truth, Yu's not really used to socializing. He's never had a lot of friends in his life and if he ever did, they never stayed around long enough to be considered one. He keeps a bit of a distance to anyone he meets while at the same time keeping himself opened up enough to the possibility of friendship. It's not very hard to get into his inner circle. Yu is so carefree and open-minded, he can get along with many different types of Kitsu. And once his friendship has been assured, he will be the most loyal of friends you could ever meet. He would do just about anything to help his friends. Or just about anyone for that matter. Yu likes to know he can be useful to someone else.
But deep underneath all this compassion and friendliness lies some insecurities. There is very little in this world that Yu fears. But being all alone, again, is top of the list. He's always been alone, as far as he can remember, and doesn't want to go back to that loneliness ever again.
