Maybe he needed to go back closer to the tree and start searching out from there again, that was the only place he had found anything. He kept his head low to the ground trying his best to see the world through the hits eyes, where would they run to if they wanted to be safe? There were plenty of places in the field that little kits could squeeze into.

"Oh babies? Little Kits!" He called out hopping around the area? "Can you hear me?" He called into the booming night. "Come out, come out wherever you are! Your mom is worried!" He knew his voice wasn't carrying very far and he didn't even know what names to call. Maybe he wouldn't be of any help. Maybe he should group back up with the others and see if anyone found anything? Afterall they would probably find them better as a group than all on their own.

He hopped back that way still keeping his eyes peeled for any other signs of little Kits. "Anyone find anything yet?" He called out to the buns around him.

User Image Firefly was a bit late to the party. Now that summer was here, the grasses were so tall in the Dales that a rabbit could just lose themselves till autumn. Not being the sort of buck to shirk from an adventure, the colorful rabbit followed the sound of a rather magnificent storm. As he hopped towards the center, thunder and lightning crashed and crackled overhead. It was enough to make his fur stand on end. He was rather leisurely enjoying the experience until a loud boom echoed across the plains. It sounded like the earth and the heavens just exploded around him. To his credit, Firefly only flinched at the sound, though his heart began beating quite a bit faster. Then there was the smell of smoke, and the flicker of an unnatural light on the horizon. Was that tree... on fire? Making his way steadily over, he paused at the sight of the throng of rabbits before him.

One appeared to be in greater distress than the rest. Hopping forward, he sniffed around the tree with a moderate amount of care, and then made his way over to the crying doe. "Haroo... is everyone alright? I was halfway across the Dales when I heard the explosion," he asked, posing it as an open question for anyone to answer if the doe was too beside herself to do so.

Justice wiggled her nose as she rummaged through the area. The bits of bark that had flown off from the tree seemed to get sparser and sparser. The smell of charred oak also seemed to dwindle and more grass started to appear in tufts. Until, there was a whole lot of grass. Buns were to her left and to her right, looking for other signs of life. It wasn't too far from the tree.

Which was why it was so interesting when she stumbled upon a hole in the grass. A small hole. She stopped, whiskers twitching and eyes narrowed. That---was that a...kit sized hole in the grass?

Her dark brown eyes blinked slowly as things started to click into place. "I found a trace of one of the kits!" She raised her voice for any nearby bunnies to here.

Koi being one of them. Immediately, Koi turned his head around to survey what she had found. "Yeah, you really did!" The snort from the doe told him that she wasn't too amused at his comment. His ears flattened and he gave her a sheepish smile. "Sorry." Best placate the young doe. Or old. She did have a limp to her.

"I'm going in." Justice claimed, already setting her foot towards the kit's tunnel. The sound of no movement had her whip around to look at Koi, and any other buns who were around "Well, are you coming with me or not?"

Koi nodded quickly. Best get hopping!

Floodwater breathed a sigh of relief. Trudging through the rain and smoke to look for kits? No problem. Breaking that kind of news to an already obviously grieving mother? Nooooot her specialty.

"Sounds good!" She yelled to the already-vanishing rabbit. She started to bound away before realizing that they should probably swap names. Just in case. "AlsomynameisFloodwaterbye!"

Floodwater made sure to stay within eyesight of the other rabbit, but continued on searching. She was thankful for the nap earlier in the day - without it, the weight of her sopping wet coat and the cold that crept in with it might have been too much for her to handle with everything else going on. The adrenaline of outrunning a flood and seeing a tree explode certainly didn't hurt, though.

Floodwater padded along the outskirts of the tree, eyes darting about for any sign of more itty bitty pawprints. Too many times she was nearly fooled by perfectly placed indents from raindrops and damp clumps of fur from any sort of critter. She glanced back at the mother - perhaps she should've asked what they looked like...? She didn't seem to take well to questions about her kits, though.

As she mulled it over, she heard Mud's call. "Nothing over here yet!" Floodwater called with a huff of disappointment. Her ears perked at the sound of another rabbit's success, though - a trail for one of the kits! The more signs of life, the better - even if that meant they had probably scattered and not stuck together. She'd stay here, then; with all efforts focused on one kit there was a chance the others would slip away.

They finished their loop around the tree without finding anything. Dusty was taking longer than he liked and Buzz had to urge him to hurry a few times. The group that had been by the roots had grown some and migrated a little away from the tree but still remained in the area. This was a weird scene. He paused and tried to pick out words and vibes from the group. A doe was sobbing inconsolably. Had someone died? Before his plan had been to shout out an invitation and run back to safety, but the mood of these rabbits stopped him. Something big was going on, he just didn't know what yet.

User Image
A fruitless search left Dusty feeling confused. Surely they'd heard someone in trouble but he found no signs of anyone. Had he not been thorough enough? A weeping doe in the center of a group answered that question, more than likely she'd been the source and was already rescued. 'Great!' he thought...but then why is everyone still hanging around? There must be more going on than meets the eyes. He spotted the buck that they originally came with and motioned Buzz to follow. That would be the quickest way to get the scoop. They hurried over just in time to hear a brown doe shout "I found a trace of one of the kits!" and disappear into the grass with their new friend. Upon hearing that, it wasn't hard to put two and two together. The crying doe had lost her kits.

After a while, Sticks found the courage to uncover herself. The rain sounded louder than ever outside her burrow, but at least she didn't hear the monster anymore. Well, that's what she had thought at least. As she crept closer to the opening, she heard another rumble, sending her back a few hops. She paused and waited anxiously to see if it would happen again. Several heartbeats passed, dragging on in tense silence before the next boom. It seemed to be moving away. What a relief... The knowledge made the doe bolder, leading her to poke her head out of the burrow. Maybe she could catch a glimpse of the retreating beast. Alas, no such luck. All she could see was grass and darkness and... wait what was that light?

In the distance, Sticks could see a flickering redish light. It was unlike anything she had ever seen before and it had her curious. It was far different from the blinding light the monster had brought with it, it had an almost warm appearance to it. She wanted a closer look. Still dripping wet from her earlier escapade, Sticks decided immediately that it was completely worth it to go investigate.

Rowan searched around the in grass for a while, occasionally calling out to the missing kits. He found it hard to believe they had gone very far. He cursed the tall plants for being such a nuisance. It had been a few minutes and he still hadn't found so much as a little trace of the little ones. He had managed to circle back toward the tree without realizing it, but was actually rather glad he did. One of the does he had seen milling around called out to the group, announcing that she had discovered another clue. He hurried over immediately.

There was a little tunnel through the grass, approximately kit-sized if he had to put a name to it. So chances were good one of them had gone off in this direction. "Yes, ma'am, I'm coming!" he called to the leading doe and hopped after her.

Asher had been trailing after Justice once she'd been free from the tree, happy to let the doe take the lead while he observed the other rabbits around them. All seemed to be no more injured than Justice was, which made him anxious. Despite her injuries, the doe was insistent on rushing ahead. Straying too far from her wasn't an option -- if he blinked he had a feeling she'd be gone, and that was nearly the case. As the rabbits searched around the splintered tree for injured and missing rabbits, Asher nearly missed Justice shouting that she'd found something.

"What'd you find-- Oh!" Asher was well familiar with the grass tunnels of the Dales, and how easy it was to lose onself in them. "Justice, wait for us!" He looked back to Hoarfrost, who gave him a withering look in kind, and dashed into the tunnel behind her.

Hoarfrost sighed under his breath at the two of them, growling and muttering crossly, but followed Asher into the small tunnel, grumbling even more at how small it seemed to be from the beginning. At least there was the chance it'd be drier than the overhead storm they were dealing with...

The doe still seemed to be beside herself, but she shared a little information with the new arrival. "My kits are missing. Please! Help find them!"

"Better make sure the mom heard that. Wait for me." he told his friend and doubled back to the group where the crying doe was. He hopped straight up to her and touched her shoulder briefly so she'd know he was addressing her. Buzz hated to be rude to a lady, and a rightfully distressed one at that, but there wasn't time for tact. "Ma'am." he spoke loudly "A kit-sized tunnel was found over in the grasses. You coming?" He looked around to the rest who had appeared to be consoling her before. "Standing here isn't going to find them."

Who's that?

User Image
Within the span of a short couple minutes, three more rabbits followed the original two into the tunnel. Dusty waited anxiously for Buzz to return. This whole situation was miserable. So many rabbits out here in danger, himself included. It was noble, but beyond worrisome. He'd never been in this kind of position before. The previous adrenaline was now wearing off and turning into frayed nerves. His urge to be underground had never been stronger. He also wasn't sure if everyone running into the same tunnel was the best way to find the kits. Spreading out made more sense to him. At this point he was tiring quickly and would probably just go along with whatever Buzz suggested. Secretly he was longing for the burrow, especially given the amount of rabbits that were already searching. This made him feel a flush of shame but it was true.

As Sticks came closer to the light, she realized it was a downed tree that seemed to be producing it. The leaves were very warm but the light seemed to be fading by the second. She wondered if it was also frightened by the rain? She would have offered it shelter back in her burrow, but any attempts to do so resulted in a sharp pain and singed fur. With an indignant huff, the doe turned her back on the light and hopped off around the tree. She didn't want it that bad anyway.

She soon came to the other end of the once towering plant where there seemed to be a lot of other rabbits gathered. They all seemed pretty preoccupied with something, but Sticks couldn't puzzle out quite what. Somewhere between curious and just plain nosy, she approached one of the rabbits. "Hey, so, what's everyone gathered for?" she inquired without any forewarning.

User ImageFirefly looked quite forlorn when he heard of the doe's plight. Missing kits, what a horrible thing for a mama to go through. He certainly didn't see eye-to-eye with his own family, but he still knew his mother would be heartbroken if anything had happened to him as a kit. "Don't worry fair lady! We shall find your precious kidlets!"

He searched around for more clues, digging at the roots of the tree, sniffing through the grasses, when a beautiful chesnut doe called out that they had found a tunnel! He rallied with the others, pausing on his way past a white bunny with black spots that had just shown up, "A mother seems to have lost her kits. That brown doe has found a tunnel, and I think we are following her".

He made sure to take some good sniffs on his way to the tunnel to try and pick up the milky scent the would be looking for once they piled into the hole in the ground.

The doe didn't really seem to hear Firefly. Perhaps Firefly should have moved out of the way sooner, but a large branch broke from the tree and landed squarely upon him.

Alanna the Pirate Queen

Mother rabbit seemed entirely occupied with the branch that had just fallen on Firefly. "Oh, oh no!"

User Image He had barely taken a step when there was another loud crack from above. The poor buck didn't even have time to register that the sound hadn't been more lightning, but a burning branch breaking off from the tree overhead. Nevertheless, the sound awoke in him the primal rabbit instinct to run, but he wasn't fast enough, and the hefty branch came crashing down onto his hindquarters. One of the smoldering twigs impaled a back leg, causing him to let out an almost unearthly scream. The pain was instantly unbearable, as the branch continued to burn through his muscle.

Breathe Firefly... breathe... you have to stop screaming... you can't panic... breathe... look down at it and find a way out... breathe... he thought to himself reassuringly, fighting the adrenaline and panic with all his might. Looking down, he saw that the wooden spike had gone clean through his thigh. Trying not to feel sick at the sight of his own blood and muscle and torn skin, he tried to lean down to gnaw at the base of the sharpened twig, right where it met the main branch. The fire thankfully made the wood brittle, and while it burned his face and mouth, it snapped off after a few moments of chewing and he dragged himself away from the tree.

He lay there panting, staring down at his leg in horror. The fire had helped in another away... it had essentially cauterized his wound... but now he needed to get the damn wood out of his leg, and he just didn't have the energy or the flexibility. Looking, he called out piteously, "Help... someone... anyone... I just need this thing out of my leg... please..." his voice was weak with pain and terror.
