Day # 96 Theme: Melody
When I woke, I found myself lying on the ground with the dappled sun shining on my face. I turned my head away, blinking to try and clear the black spots that floated in front of me, and I was so distracted by the light's afterimage that it took me a moment to notice the woman lying on a large stone with a flat surface. She had her head propped up with one delicate hand, watching me.
I slowly sat up, and a second later the woman did too, her voluminous blue hair falling in front of her like a rippling wave. I stared at her uncertainly.
She smiled and then her lips parted. The music started softly, almost too faint to hear, but soon it swelled filling the area with the most beautiful sound I had ever heard. It drowned out everything else around me until I all I could focus on were the melodious notes that spilled from this woman's mouth.
I stared, enthralled as she rose to her feet, still singing.
My body trembled, and I could only watch forlornly as the woman took a couple steps backward and dropped off the rock out of the sight. Her voice rose, and I quickly scrambled to my feet and making my way around the rock until I could see her again.
She stood by the edge of the river, facing me, and the music still swirled headily through my mind. I was drunk on its beauty and barely noticed myself half-stumbling towards the woman.
She took a step backward into the river; the water sloshed angrily around her ankles, then her calves, then thighs as she continued backing into the river.
I paused before stepping into the water. The river frothed with white as it sped past at a speed that would surely sweep me off my feet, yet...the woman stood there, now waist-deep, without a problem.
I put one foot into the water and immediately felt it slide from underneath me. I fell forward, landing with a splash.
The rocks beneath my hands were slick and it was no wonder that I'd fallen, yet...
I looked up at the woman, drawn to her golden eyes--they were bright and hypnotic and laughing. And the music. Still, it flowed around me, pulling me calling me closer, and so I stood back up, stumbling and slipping further out into the water until it reached my knees. The current slammed hard against my legs and I struggled to remain on my feet.
If only the woman would come closer to me. If only I could reach her.
But instead, she moved further away until the water sloshed over her shoulders. Her hair flooded around her in the water, seemingly unaffected by the current, just as the rest of her seemed unaffected.
I continued forward until the water reached my thighs and almost immediately, the music stopped. The silence was so shocking that I lost all focus on where I was stepping and the current knocked me off my feet. I slammed into the water, quickly getting sucked underneath. I tried to kick myself back up to the surface, but the rapids twisted me around, making it hard to get my bearings.
Out of nowhere, the woman appeared in front of me, her hands on my arms, her face scant inches from mine. Her smile was grotesque--her mouth filled with needle-thin teeth.
I tried to scream, but it simply came out as a gurgle of bubbles that took all my air with them. Not that it mattered because before I could even begin to panic at the lack of oxygen, something stabbed into my stomach, wrenching up inside me.
This time when I tried screaming, the water in front of me misted red, masking the woman's face in a hazy sheen of blood. She closed the distance between us until her lips were against mine and I could feel the sharpness of her teeth against my tongue. Her hair swirled through the water, swathing me in a layer of blue.
I stared into her bright gold eyes, watching them slowly dim as my vision faded.
