                • The advisor paused and the options that Roselyn gave to her. It was so hard to choose when everything seemed so enticing. ”I think I will go with your basic leavened bread. Then, I’ll take one order of the lemon sugared fritters, I’m very curious to see how those taste. Two orders of biscottis and three orders of ginger cookies. They all seem like lovely options. I might just keep a few in my office for myself or anyone who comes in case hunger decides to creep up. Always good to have, you know?” Smiling at the female, she watched as she moved to get the orders before turning to Fidal. As Fidal greeted her back, she giggled and shook her head a bit. ”Well that’s a relief. I’d have to agree, bumping into you was more of a pleasant experience.” Reaching out, she took his hand in hers and shook it lightly before rubbing her thumb gently over his knuckle.

Turning her head, she looked to Lerato as he began to strike up some conversation. Seraphina loved the piano quite a bit. The piano and violin were her favorites to stop and listen to if someone near her was playing. ”The violin and piano in particular. I personally know how to play the violin. I learned when I was a small girl. My father often accompanied me with the piano. Always lovely to hear, not to mention the fond memories that come to mind when I listen. I must say I love your clarinet playing. It’s always so beautiful every time I hear it.” Folding her arms, she smiled at both males and waited to see what Fidal had to say.

Roselyn grabbed a pen sitting in a small jar of ink and began writing down all the things that Sera is ordering from her. According to what the pretty blonde is saying, she wants one loaf of leavened bread, one order of the lemon sugared fritters, two orders of biscottis and three orders of ginger cookies. This will have to be an order that will have to be placed in a basket to make sure that it is easy to carry out of the bakery when all is said and done. She handed the slip over to one of the employees that are operating the counter with her and he immediately started to fill up the bakery with all the baked goods that Sera asked for. Roselyn had to go outside behind the bakery to check if any fresh fritters were ready to go. With help from the person who was frying them, she placed five fritters in a basket lined with parchment and carried it inside the bakery. She sprinkled some sugar on them before carrying the basket of fritters to the counter and moved the fritters to the basket that the other employee had prepared for Sera. Finally, Roselyn tallied the total cost for her order and handed over the slip of parchment to Sera so she knows how much she owes her. By this time, Lerato had tasted the fritters and complimented them, which is in some sense a compliment to Roselyn as well since she put a lot of work into them. He asked her how long has been baking for, and she certainly does not mind answering this question. She just has to hope that she does not ramble on too much about her history with baking.

"Thank you so much. It is nice to hear from people like you that you enjoy what I do here. As for how long I been baking, that all started when I was a child learning from the previous owner of this bakery. He took me in and taught me all that he knew. It was a way for me at first to learn more about the treats I love so much and help my family out by earning extra coin. I did that for so many years before the last owner retired and handed over the business to me. Of course, I relocated here because I felt the bakery would be more prosperous here...and I was right. Since then, I have been trying to maintain the standards he set along with carving my own identity. A lot of people seem to like what I do, and that pleases me so...Will there be anything else I can help you with today? I noticed you have a third friend with you and I wonder if he would like to buy anything from the bakery today."

Fidal's tail fluttered as her gentle touch sent a pleasant shiver through his spine. He wasnt sure why she ruined his composure every time she was around, though, he also wasn't sure he cared. His gaze lingered on her for a bit before Lerato snapped him back to reality.

He nodded as Sera answered the question first. "I have to agree. The violins tones are quite extraordinary. Though, it seems a bit obvious I would be partial to it." He was named after the instrument after all.

Fidal did enjoy the company, however he had to finish his shopping. As soon as Roselyn had a minute, he ordered a few loaves of bread. He bowed to the two, looking at Seraphina a bit longer, before taking his bread and leaving to get his other groceries.

For Roselyn, the summer is like any other season of the year. The bakery shall still be busy since people always have a need for baked goods, especially bread. If there is one thing that does change that she does consider significant, it has to do with the students from the academy. Since it is the summer break and not every student decides to return home, there will be some who are wanting to do work, whether it is for money, experience or a genuine desire to learn more about whatever it is they are getting into. Much like Roselyn's predecessor, she has a desire to share her knowledge about the bakery, whether it is about making the dough, working the oven and other equipment, or serving the guests. Roselyn still has not decided whether to assign anyone who desires apprenticeship at her bakery whether to begin as one of the bakers or assisting guests in the front. It might be better to do the latter in the interest of safety, but she will have to wait and see who will come into her shop should that ever happen. For now, everything will be business as usual. Over the past two months, Roselyn has made small changes to the bakery's menu, one of the biggest additions being the cheesecake. It was so popular as a special that she decided to teach her staff how to make it and when she felt confident that they knew how to do it, she made it a permanent menu item. In addition, she has decided to have five specials that will not change often. Should one or more specials not sell well, she will replace them with something else and hope for a better response from her guests. This morning was a rush as per usual for the bakery, but nothing that she and her staff were not ready for her. When the rush ended, Roselyn was able to move about the bakery calmly and speak with her guests as they browse the shop, answering any questions they may have.

Considering that Zelda had been sick and she was still recovering in their dorm room, Catherine helped her with a spongebath, a change of clothes and breakfast, all before telling her to take things easy. The princess then left the dorms and was now on the way to the bakery; she was pondering about taking apprenticeship under the female baker's wing, just as the same as her beloved going through a similar path. Considering that baking required the usage of an oven, such unorthodox knowledge may help in training her mastery with her raiment. Hers was associated with fire, after all, the thing that helped with the baking process, resulting in such delicious creations on display. And that was what she first saw by the time she stepped through those doors.

Definitely, the pastries may help in cheering Zelda up since she was crestfallen at the unexpected obstacle. Catherine's eyes were on one particular item, the one that looked simple. But nonetheless, it may be also filled with meat or fruits, whichever would be in season for summer."Hoping that Zelda would like this..." she whispered to herself faintly, hoping that no one would hear the ramble.

Yesterday was nothing special in terms of how her business went. People came and went, buying bread and all sorts of goodies. There were a few times where she met kids and gave them a free cookie to snack on while their parents were shopping for bread, but nothing out of the ordinary for her. There was not even a moment when the shop was going to run out of items. As soon it was time to close the bakery, Roselyn made a shopping trip to her usual vendors for ingredients and had them delivered to her bakery before going home to relax, eat and read another chapter of a fictional story about a common girl and a prince falling in love with each other before going to sleep. She woke up the next day, early in the morning, and bathed before getting dressed, braiding her hair and eat a light breakfast before going to the bakery. As per usual, she and the morning team were the first to arrive to get the oven started and prepare the dough for bread, the batter for the cookies, work on the special of the day, etc. This process is a lot of work, but Roselyn can't help enjoying it. While it is good to interact with people who come to her shop on a daily basis, there was something rewarding for her to work on the actual food that people come to her bakery to buy and eat.

As soon as it was time to open the shop, Roselyn let the flood gates open. People went into shop and immediately put her team to the test as per usual. It is nothing that they are prepared for, and every guest who was a part of the morning crowd got exactly what they needed as quick as possible. Roselyn spoke with a couple of the guests briefly, mostly greeting them with a "Good morrow" or telling them to have a good day as they were leaving. Most of her time was spent on making sure everything was running smoothly and helping out in places that were falling behind. Once the morning rush ended, everyon was able to relax a bit, especially Roselyn. Her eyes caught a young redheaded lady who is undeniably Catherine, the princess of Valor. It is not everyday that Roselyn is visited by royalty. For her, this is a serious honor that should not take lightly. She curtsied respectfully toward Catherine after approaching her, smiled friendly, and said to her,

"Good morrow. How may I help you this day?"

It has been decided; Catherine would pick up a huge basket of bread to be shared later on, and that pastry would be included there. The female baker's voice called out to her, and Catherine almost punched someone as a reflex action to being spooked out, but knew better than to do so.
"Hello there. I actually come here for two things: the pastries to help in cheering someone up, and also for me to take on apprenticeship as part of my work experience. Does your bakery accept apprentices at this moment? I may want to try something out. Being a princess sometimes involve doing what the locals do, you know?"

That was one advice given to her by the queen, her mother. While the princess does tend to be brash at times, being hardworking at something she's passionate about was a strong point that would come in handy, more so in dire circumstances.

It did not catch Roselyn by surprise when Catherine told her that she came here to purchase some pastries for the purpose of brightening up a friend's day. There is something about food, especially a sweet pastry, that can help make someone's bad day a little bit better, and Roselyn is happy that she can be the provider of such pastries. What did surprise her is when Catherine asked her if she can become a baker's apprentice. It is strange to witness a princess wanting to work a commoner's job, although Roselyn will not point this out to her. She is looking for someone to teach about the bakery business, but she did not think a princess would be the first to ask. There is no way Catherine will stick around for a long time since her responsibilities as a princess must take priority before that of a baker's apprentice. However, this could be a good experience for the two of them. The two of them can speak to one another, learn new things and develop a friendship. Right now, Roselyn has to get a bit of background information from Catherine to see where would be the best place to put her in.

"I can have one of my friends help you with the pastries once we are done talking about your possible apprenticeship here. There are many things you can learn here, such as how to interact with the guests here, preparing the food that we serve, shopping for ingredients, and so on. Can you tell me something about the bakery that interests you the most along with any prior experiences you have?"

Catherine sighed internally; it was a bit more difficult that she had anticipated, and she now understood why Zelda was feeling initially nervous when she met the male blacksmith. She then took a deep breath, having to compose herself to craft a valid reply. "That can be acceptable. The pastry part, I mean. As for the apprenticeship part, I'm mostly interesting in the baking process, like how these products become like that from start to finish. Plus, my raiment is associated with fire, so perhaps... some principles of baking may also apply to mastering that? I'm not completely sure, but gotta find out somewhere, even if it's not through books."

Quite unorthodox, but such applications may work as an exercise in harnessing the power of her raiment. At least, that was what Catherine would believe, being childish and all that.

The young princess's interest lies in the heart of what makes bakery good. It boils down to the quality of the dough and the temperature of the oven. This interest of hers could be due to her affinity for fire. Maybe placing her in the back area with the ovens won't be a bad idea. It is important that certain temperatures for the ovens are reached and maintained, or the quality of the baked goods will suffer. Will this teach her how to master her raiment? Roselyn does not have the answer to that question, but she will learn something from this work experience. If this is where she wants to work, Roselyn will not deny her the opportunity. Of course, she must be reasonable and keep an eye on her. The last thing this baker wants is for the princess to be harmed. After doing some thinking for about fifteen seconds, Roselyn said to Catherine,

"If you want to be back there as a part of the baking process, then you will start with the ovens. With your raiment being fire, you might feel right at home. It is important that we start heating up our ovens at a certain time, and that the temperatures are maintained. It is part of why our bread is of a consistent quality. Perhaps you can learn how to control your flames this way, although I can't promise that will happen. Would you be interested coming tomorrow at dawn to learn about the ovens? You will have to wear some clothes that will protect your skin and something for your head."

Like an excited kid that she was, she nodded, eager to learn about the ovens. "That can be arranged. And I won't mind the gear. Protection does come first, after all." That was one crucial aspect that she had to learn throughout the upcoming lesson. Plus, the female baker was right about feeling right at home with the oven; her raiment was related to fire, something that she was used to. With the proper control, she would be much better with it. Perhaps, Catherine would serve as a better inspiration for Zelda, who had yet to tap into more of her self-confidence. Unknown to her, there were two other women joining in, buying the pastries. The female owner was definitely about saving the learning process for tomorrow.

And after the day was done for, Cathy left the bakery, paying for the bread she had bought beforehand. She was hoping that Zelda would smile with that act of kindness, despite the sickness she was currently having.

It seems like Roselyn will have an apprentice at the bakery, and it is none other the princess of Valor herself. It will be an interesting experience for the two of them, but Roselyn feels confident that the princess will be a hard worker. Overall, she is feeling excited about being able to teach someone else about the baking process. It has been a while since she had this opportunity, especially with someone as young as Catherine. When they finished their conversation, Roselyn had one of her employees help out Catherine with getting the bread and pastries that she came for. The rest of the day was spent with Roselyn speaking with other guests who came in and making a nice profit today. She closed up shop and helped with cleaning out the ovens. While cleaning, she noticed that one of the ovens had a crack on it. Normally she would fix it right away, but if Catherine shows up early in the morning, then she should make this another learning opportunity for the young lady, so Roselyn left it alone for the time being. After the rest of the cleanup was done, she returned home to relax for a bit before drifting off to sleep to get ready for the next day.

Fortunately, Catherine knew that the enormous care package from the bakery, plus the procedures in combating the sickness with blankets and warm soup, did the trick to lift Zelda's spirits and to restore her health, just enough to keep the day going for the two of them. There was the gnawing feeling of worry for his girlfriend, but all she could do now was hope for the best; she still had to return to the bakery today, mainly because of the apprenticeship lesson about the oven; understanding how it works may help with her raiment, and also when baking all types of bread. Mostly a win-win situation for her. Taking a deep breath, she came into the establishment, checking in on what’s in stock all over the shelves. Not much pastries this time compared to yesterday, but there was still the different loaves of bread with different grains used as the ingredients. In fact, there was one that she was mostly familiar with, the fine white bread served back in the castle where she mostly grew up.

But the food may have to wait till later; the lesson was the main reason why she was here at the bakery after all. Her crimson eyes scanned around the area, a wooden door at the back appearing within her field of vision. But that area was mostly for employees only and unauthorized personnel were forbidden from crossing towards that spot.

As per usual, Roselyn arrived at the bakery early in the morning and unlocked the back doors where the ovens are. There is one oven that is in need of repair, but she has the material she needs to repair it. However, she wanted to wait until Catherine arrives to show her what they do in case one of their ovens needs to get fixed. This time it did not require constructing a new oven, which would take a considerable amount of time and resources to do so. In the meantime, she had the others start making dough for the bakery while she created the mixture she uses for repairing the oven, which is a mixture of clay, straw, and sand. One of her employees reported to her that Catherine was waiting for her, so she made her way to the princess, bowed politely to her, then said,

"I am glad that you are here. I want to show you something about the ovens that does not happen often since I take great care to keep them well-maintained, but they can't last forever. Sometimes they suffer damage and we have to fix them. I'll show you how we do this before I get into the basics of operating an oven."

Roselyn led Catherine to back where the ovens were. All the ovens, except for the one that is in repair, are currently being heated by setting a fire in them. She will soon explain to the princess how long they heat the ovens, but the first thing she wanted to show her is what they use to fix the oven. When they were by the oven with a small hole, Roselyn revealed the mixture she made earlier and used her bare hands to spread the mixture over the hole the oven had.

"When these ovens are used so much, sometimes cracks and holes can start showing up. However, we use a mixture of sand, clay and straw patch up these small cracks and holes. This doesn't happen often, but it is something to keep in mind in case you see this happen. As you might have noticed, we have a few ovens here and my bakers are heating them up with wood and straw. Each of them requires a certain length of time to heat up, usually about 2-4 hours. I do this because not all our baked goods bake at the same temperature. The heat of our ovens affect the quality of our goods just as much as the ingredients we used...do you understand so far?"

Catherine was wondering on whether something happened that caused the delay, only for the baker to finally show up with the excuse. It was related to the ovens. She remained speechless, being unsure on what to say in regards to that matter, but chose to follow the other to the place where the ovens were set up. She was being attentive, having to absorb the knowledge in her head. It was something different from how her raiment worked, but some of the principles were the same. After all, it was still related to fire, something that was right up her alley. "So sand, clay and straw... They are the ones responsible for keeping the oven intact. My raiment does make things burn, though the fire can still be affected by real factors. If the oven is damaged, the flames can go out of control, and the bread may end up being burned. Is that correct?"

In fact, rain and water would still douse the flames completely, though with the structure of the oven like that, there was still the principle of keeping the fire source controlled, though it would take time and labor. Somewhat similar to her training, because who knows what may happen in due time? That would be an interesting insight. With additional info that Cathy had to keep note of, it was then time to set up the ovens. The clay, sand and straw mixture looked and felt foreign, something that the usual princess hands wouldn't touch. But it was the princess of Valor who was used to the hardships of being a student, and was used to being down and dirty with the training sessions, so it was something that she wouldn't mind.

The lesson was later done for today after a few trial and error sessions with the oven set-up, and Cathy was content with that. Oh boy, she just couldn't wait for another lesson, but she was unaware of what would happen next once she would arrive back to the dorm room.
