"Ladies. And. Gentlemen." a completely monotone, droll voice came from the microphone on the stage...belonging to a green, faceless, eye-covered devil known as a Gogmagog, looming high above the stage but still having taken up the challenge of the Yellow Dragon's first-ever 'Open Mic Night', being held in lieu of the owner's current funk...wherein his head had repeatedly been slammed (by himself, of course) into the top of the bar enough times that he simply stopped caring about the absconding of his celebrity Preta with some, again quote, "Floozies"...and decided to just let the rest of the gathered crowd have a shot at entertaining for the time being. He didn't even particularly care enough to go outside and deal with a rowdy demon that had tried to burst into the club, only to get a gangland-style butt-whoopin' from the combination of his Nue and his Troll, two bouncers who were proving surprisingly adept at their new jobs. None of this, nor the burgeoning romance(?!) between Futomimi and Clotho, the steadily-flowing drinks of new bartender Dionysus, or even the flatlining jokes of poor stand-up comedian Gogmagog, were enough to stir him from his current despondency. What in the Hell had he gotten himself into? Running a nightclub was horrid! Even a rabid Obariyon attempting to rush the stage to get the god-awful Gogmagog off of it getting cloven in two by in-house security Atavaka wasn't enough to really stir him.
Moral of the story was, it was getting pretty sad up in here. And the summoner needed some kind of a jolt if he was going to turn this thing around.
"What. Do. You. Get. When. You. Cross. A. Sum. Mon. Ner. With. A. Soft. Ball." he droned on, and Nito covered his ears with his beanie and resisted the urge to scream, "A. Soft. Pitch. b***h."
Not even a mild chuckle.

"So. I. Said..." the large, green devil continued his set to the pain and annoyance of the otherwise party-happy crowd, "That's. Not. A. Bovine. Rectum. ... That. Is. My. Mom." He paused for laughter that never came, and perhaps not quite understanding how nobody in the audience could find that not funny, he added. "That. Is. The. Joke. ... Commence. Laughter."
"You suck!"
"That. Is. What. Your. Mom. Said. Last. Night. When. I. Was. Do-. -Ing. Her."
...A demon in the back muffled a giggle. First laugh of the night!
"Ugh! Don't encourage him!" Nito glared over his shoulder as he rolled back off of the stool and stood to his full height, moving towards the door to glance outside...only to sense the rumblings of a brewing rebellion inside if this set continued any longer. He had to admit...if it wasn't his idea to hold an Open Mic, he would probably feel the same way. But something about living with your choices, and all that...but if Gogmagog told ONE more 'Your Mom' joke...
"Yo. Momma. So. Fat..."
...The sounds of the riot and Nito's struggle to contain it were loud enough to nearly shatter the Dragon's windows and bring the whole structure to the ground.

Calming down that riot had been...a chore. Somewhere along the line he was fairly sure he had been forced to take down a devil that had been listed on his little Cathedral of Shadows App-y-majigger, and some Macca had been neatly transferred into an account he didn't even begin to know how to access. But by the time that the fighting had died down, the club was already settling back into its normal pattern of drinking, laughing, singing, occasional Clotho fortune-telling, reminiscing already about the legendarily-awful comedy stylings of Gogmagog (who himself had finished his current set and gone backstage just before the riots got worse, casually sipping water with a thousand-yard stare of pure bliss at the chaos that had erupted at his 500th Yo Momma joke of the evening. His work here was done, but one day he would return. Today was not that day, but he would return. For now, though, the microphone was empty and Nito sat next to the stage as if to police it against future terrible acts together with his Atavaka of Internal Security. His arms were crossed in annoyance as he leaned back in his chair, but even he couldn't stay mad for too long when Futomimi laughed melodically from the bar at something Clotho said, letting everybody in the place know that something sweet was actually brewing there.
Nice. He couldn't begrudge them that. Made him wonder where Nia was in all of this, in fact. Usually she would have caught up to him by now, but if she hadn't, he knew for certain that it was only because she was busy doing something important. Once she had taken a day to catch up to him only because members of the Crows had been hunting him and she had stopped to confront them and talk them out of it, eventually choosing to mislead them in another direction when they would not be dissuaded. He couldn't really understand why they couldn't be dissuaded, but he didn't question it, only welcomed her back with open arms...and he would really welcome her back about now. Maybe these demons would listen if she stuffed a few canisters of tear gas into their mouths and pulled the pin?
...No, bad Nito! Bad! Tear gas, bad. ...Well, not too bad. He'd actually quite enjoy seeing Johnny Preta crying like a faucet from the tendrils of smoke creeping into his ugly face!
...Idly, he wondered when she would show up...and if any other devil would be brave enough to follow the act of Gogmagog.

It was pandemonium inside of the Yellow Dragon. A barely-tolerable kind, filled with drinking, shouting, games, fights, terrible comedy, worse singing, and all of the worst trappings you could imagine finding in a seedy night club in the underworld-on-earth that had become of this world. And somehow, against all odds, at the center of all of this was the most unlikely of proprietors...the self-styled Great Summoner, 4th Kuzunoha and 1st of His Name, Jakken Kuzunoha! He had established this place as a sanctuary and a location to host his trivia showdown with that smarmy little Preta that had made a mockery of him out in the streets, and what had become of it since then was beyond his comprehension. The Preta had managed to turn his little haven into a club with an active stage performance, and the addition of Dionysus had managed to change that into a bar-slash-cub with drinks flowing and everybody singing, and then the riots had started when Gogmagog had opened up his comedy act on the stage and the fighting had stopped...but never entirely, breaking out in little pockets along the floor of the bar only to occasionally be put down by Nito himself in his ever-lasting frustration. He sighed and put his head down on the bar, exhausted and exasperated. It was then, at the end of his rope, that he heard the matronly voice from behind the bar of a woman...a devil woman? Soothing him, and smirking through her words at the familiarity of his plight.
"First night club, isn't it? You're far too uptight, sugar," the slightly older demoness washed out a glass casually, leaning over the bar as he raised his head to listen to her closely, sensing the wisdom in her words, "Don't worry...I've got plenty of experience with this sort of thing. I've got some ideas that should get this place under control in short order. If you'll let me..."
Suddenly he was wide awake! His eyes open and his head nodding!
"Yes! Yes! Anything! I can't take it anymore!" he pleaded, and with a knowing smirk, the Nyx nodded, raising a finger towards the stage as if to signal to someone behind the curtain.
"There, there...Mother Nyx is going to make it all better..."

Nyx smirked from behind the bar as Nito looked on hopefully, waiting for the sound advice that she would offer that would salvage his sanity from this...this...insanity that his sanctuary here had become!
...Her finger raised, and beside the stage, Gogmagog seemed to acknowledge her without making a visible expression. Pressing his meaty green hamhock down onto an oversized boombox, music began to play.
...And from behind the stage burst Dionysus, drunk, shirtless, and wearing assless chaps and a cowboy hat, dancing sensually for all of the lady demons in the place. Immediately thrown aback, Nito stood from his stool to put a stop to things...when what to his wandering eyes should appear in the doorway?
...But Johnny Preta in the doorway with his floozies, looking at him...smirking. Mocking him. As if to say, 'Oh, THIS is what you like?'
...
...
As the fire and ash of what had once been the Yellow Dragon roared up, high into the sky, Nito walked away from that nightmare alongside his Surt with a parade of refugee demons behind him...and tears of pure joy filling his eyes.

This is a moment of serenity.
Think of the peaceful joy of taking a walk in the park with your beloved pet dog, his joyful expression as you toss the ball for him out into the lovely green grass and he dashes a long playfully, bringing it back to you with that familiar love and hopefulness that only a dog can possess. Imagine, if you will, the peaceful calm of your adorable little kitten with the fluffiest, most cuddle-able fur you can imagine...curled up in your lap and nuzzling into the palm of your hand, serenely soaking in the warmth of you, its adoring owner.
Think of a first date with a girl who loves you, or a guy if you are a girl...or a guy if you're a guy and that's what you're into, or a girl and a girl if that's what you like, no judgments here, we're all inclusive and serene, yo...think of that date, the gentle breeze on your face at the top of the Ferris Wheel as you hold each other's hands and look out across the city skyline, all the beautiful lights dimming one-by-one as the world goes into a peaceful sleep around you.
Think of soft woodwind instruments, gentle notes floating across the breeze...accompanied by the harmonic, soft melody of strings.
Think of clouds. Think of gently swaying trees. Think of a hug from a caring mother.
Serenity.
...
All of these things could be seen now in the expression of Nonito Nekata as he walked down the streets of a demon-infested Oshu City, casually brushing aside devils as they challenged him...as though he barely even registered their presence.
"Does anybody else feel a bit peckish? No? I think I'd like something sweet..."
He didn't look back at his demons, slogging on behind him, fighting off the stronger foes that he didn't even acknowledge in his happy daze. They'd take care of it, surely. He was in the mood for some candy. Or ice cream. Was there a freezer in this city with enough ice in it to preserve some ice cream, still, with the power off so long?
Even if there wasn't...oh, man, did he feel good!
Serene, even. You might say...and not even the Lord of Flies himself could change that.

He couldn't help feeling as though he was forgetting something. Sitting in the ruins of one of the city's hole-in-the-wall Sweet Shops, casually eating the last few bites of a runny chocolate ice cream that had nearly melted away before he got his hands on it, he wondered if there was something else he should have been thinking about right now. It had been child's play for he and his new ally Ongyo-Ki (fused by ridding himself of the horrid memory of Nyx and, sadly, his burnin' buddy Surt) to tear through a horde of Loa and Legion to get into this place. Perhaps it should have been a challenge, but he was riding so high right now, feeling so good after breaking free of the loop of frustration that his annoying Preta companion (still lingering in the back of the shop with consoling floozies trying to convince him that he still looked 'Baws' despite having half of his hair and eyebrows singed off by the Blaze of the Yellow Dragon) had locked him in back there...that he just felt like he was on top of the world. He could do anything, really! That was what he felt like. And so those devils had fallen by the wayside like so many others.
Now they were enjoying some ice cream, and idly, his thoughts again wandered to Nia. It might be a tad harder for her to find him without the landmark of the Dragon to search him out at. Rumors of its party had probably gone to every corner of the city, but now he was back on the move, which, in a way, was probably more the usual for her. She might find him better this way, really. He shrugged, wondering what he was forgetting as he moved to the freezer and opened it up, seeing a small bowl of pudding covered up with a small label, 'For Little Miss Chickpea, Suzume' and decided that it would be rude to touch it. Maybe next time he'd order some the proper way and see why it was so good that it needed reservation. Instead, he simply grabbed a swiftly-warming strawberry tart and started back out towards the exit.
"Onward and upward, they say. ...Chin up, Mr. Preta. You're still alive, aren't you? Can't ask for much more after an incident like that now, can we?"

He had eaten a lot of really good treats over the years. Back in the Village, there had been an older woman who could make some chocolate mousse, chocolate cake, and a chocolate cream pie that were absolutely out of this world! When he was a kid he used to make a game of sneaking by her house whenever he knew she was cooking and trying to linger, make it look like he was playing a game or lost a ball in the yard or something, just in order to rope himself into getting a piece of that chocolate-y goodness. Of course, being that this was the Kuzunoha Village and basically nobody had toy balls, played games of that variety, or lingered around doing much of anything that wasn't considered training or mischief, she pretty much read through his intentions like a book without a cover. But that didn't mean that he wasn't clever for coming up with those covers! And hey, she still was kind enough to let him try out most of her chocolate concoctions when she finished them before giving the rest to her own family! It was their little secret, though sometimes he would share his chocolate things with Nana without telling her exactly where he got them. She really loved chocolate, that one...it was one of her vices and he always enjoyed the smile of satisfaction on the usually-meek face of his beloved sister when she indulged for a change. She was such a good girl, a good student, he just loved to see her do anything out of the norm...and was often the one who instigated her into stepping out of line on the rare times that she did.
But chocolate! Chocolate always got to her. The perfect bribe. Not that he needed to bribe her often, of course. And bribe was a dirty way of putting such a close, familial bond as they had in those moments! It was more of a...brotherly bargain! Bribe...psh...honestly...
...Nonetheless, for all of the chocolate-laced memories between them, what Nito couldn't help but think about right now and what dominated his mind was just how amazing that tart had been back there at that Sweet Shop! And that home-made ice cream, probably churned in the back with some secret family recipe? Good gracious, Ms. ...um...Macious? He'd have to go back there all the time when they got out of this! It was decided! For sure! No doubt about it! And...what was he doing before getting distracted by tarts, again?
...Oh yes! Demon! Attacked him, he kicked it's behind. Same old, same old.

Well it was about time that he finally remembered that apocalypses could be a bit serious, he was afraid. Sure, he was full of more energy than a dog chocked full of sugar and just seeing his owners for the first time after a week-long vacation, and feeling better than a death row inmate, wrongly accused, being released from prison minutes from the chair! But his demons...they were pretty haggard, apart from Ongyo-Ki. He could have pushed on, but it wouldn't have been fair to the poor little Preta, still mourning his lost follicles, or the Bouncer Duo Troll and Nue who were doing their best to keep up with the fighting but were starting to show the wear and tear of a full-blown war between Lords of Hell in exhaustion and smaller-scale wounds. And when one of Hel's most dangerous handmaidens appeared in the road before them, Nito knew on instinct that if he didn't want to lose some of his own demonic allies in the struggle, it was time to turn their path elsewhere and take their chances in escape and regrouping. His demons needed their rest.
"All right, then. As much as I'd like to press on, you all plainly need a breather," he sighed as he ducked into an alley, tossing a smokebomb at the road to distract the devil and retreat down an alleyway, off towards an apartment complex that looked relatively safe for the time being, "We'll catch a fiver in the lobby of that complex, and then it's back out to dealing with an apocalypse. Kuzunoha Work and all, yes?"
Self-proclaimed, sure, but when you had the skills to pay the bills...the bill collector didn't much care whose name was on the check.

Once they'd been eliminated, the number of threats in the area shot downwards. Apparently, even demons weren't particularly impressed by bandits, nor did many of them want to deal with such foul humans... and she couldn't blame them for that one. They exemplified pretty much everything demons believed was wrong with humans.

The correct response was a loud buzzing that came from above as another swarm of killer flies came towards her, only to be stopped by the flames that poured out of Sandalphon's hands. Killing all of them had taxed the energy she was providing the demons... slightly... but at least for now, it was more than enough to block the attacks of the enemy.

As Sandalphon finished tearing through one group of foes, another demon nervously approached - but Kisa's group was pretty accepting at this point, even if this particular demoness did look like she belonged more with the Fiends than the angels. Still, Kisa was basically neutral in their affairs, and all of them had enough in common with her that they were willing to work alongside her.
