Iah loved the stars, so this assignment was really big for him. He was really looking forward to it, and he even knew what constellation he wanted to do. Apus, the Bird of Paradise. It was such a simply constellation, but it was a special one back home in the Swirling Storm with his family.

The Apus has a simple story, but it is a good story still. Even to this day, this simple story is passed down among my family back home, even despite us never seeing a paradise in our lives. Apus, a small bird from a secluded paradise far from the swirling storm, watched over its home and made sure the jungle creatures were safe. Since Apus was so small and wanted to help everyone, it would fly over and see if anything creatures were in danger, going off to get help from the other creatures whenever it saw such a thing. One example was if a smaller creature was stuck in the mud, it would go get a stronger creature to pull it out. It did this for its entire life, managing to save many lives and being loved by all in the paradise. When Apus finally passed late in its years, their spirit was brought up to the stars and became one with them, forever watching over its paradise and the creatures there.

User Image Never a fan of science class, Binhdi nevertheless had to admit that this one had been interesting. As she finished writing up her observations, she looked decidedly shaken. Between the minor explosions and the weird expanding goops, she was ready to call it a day. Still, she and her partner had managed to get though five experiemtns, which wasn't bad at all.

Still.

With a sigh, she gathered her notes and turned them in to the teacher before hurrying out.

I have no idea why gaia did a double post when I tried to edit the above. I'm sorry!

Melaine blinked, her thoughts of the screenplay she was writing interrupted by the teacher's statement. Yes, Professor Flora had dangerous materials. She looked sideways at her lab partner and they shared a small smile. This was at least going to be an interesting and enjoyable experiment, if a distraction from her mental story. From what she knew of mixing elements, the possibilities of what they'd see would be amazing. Some combination did fantastic things like exploding, expanding, shimmering, bubbling, etc. Putting on her protective gear, she surveyed the different elements they had to work with and started running combinations in her head.

Melaine removed her goggles and relaxed in her seat, letting out a whoosh of air. Looking over the finished papers, her partner and she had been able to complete 3 of the lab assignments. The different reactions had been fascinating to experience and she wished they'd had time to work on few more. Hopefully this topic came up later in another class.

Raesa searched the sky for a a cluster of starts to stick out. There were so many her eyes skimmed across them until her attention was drawn to a long string of stars. The were scattered in such a a way that they reminded her of her hair. Coma Berenices, she found out it was called. She wrote it down carefully, ensuring she had it spelled correctly for her research later.

Raesa was full of amazement as she read about her chosen constellation at home. She'd been right that the string of stars reminded her of hair because that's exactly what it was meant to be! The story said there a queen named Berenice with beautiful long hair that was admired by a goddess. The queen promised to cut her hair and give it to the goddess to make sure her husband, the king, got home safely. Berenice did just that but when the king got home and heard what happened her was angry his wife sacrificed her beautiful hair. He went to the goddess to get back but it wasn't there anymore. It turned out, the goddess thought the hair was so beautiful that she placed it in the sky with the other stars so it could be admired.

Raesa was tickled at the thought of hair so pretty it would be placed in the sky. She admired a lock of her own and smiled thinking her hair was definitely pretty enough to be with the stars.

Altair perched themselves on a quiet spot of grass, very pleased with the assignment they'd been given. Learning about constellation was something they enjoyed immensely and they already had a lot of knowledge where they were concerned. This was a great opportunity to maybe learn more about a constellation that they weren't already familiar with. Altair looked towards a familiar grouping on constellations recognizing a few of them by name. There's Hercules.....and Aquila.... They frowned at one the weren't familiar with within the grouping and pointed it out to the Professor Flora as his chosen constellation.

The constellation was called Ophiuchus and what an interesting tale it had behind it. There was a male that watched a serpent gather healing herbs and used them himself. To his surprise the herbs made him immortal! A god found out what the male had become and feared what would happen if the whole population became immortal. That couldn't happen so the god killed him to keep the secret but honored him with a place in the stars to commend his achievement. How absolutely fascinating Altair thought before he cringed in imagined pain. Such a discovery as immortality to be hidden. What a shame.

Too much time with the practical had nearly made Seoul forget the mystical. Granted, the mystical in this case was the night's sky.

After looking for a while...WOW! That's a lot of stars! And she could barely make out a shape...yes, yes! She liked that one!

Cassiopeia was the beautiful wife of Cepheus, king of Ethiopia, and the mother of Andromeda. She is most famous in connection with the myth of her daughter, Andromeda. The queen made the mistake of bragging she was more lovely than the Nereids, or even than Juno herself. The goddesses were, needless to say, rather insulted, and went to Neptune, god of the sea, to complain. Neptune promptly sent a sea monster (possibly Cetus?) to ravage the coast. The king and queen were ordered to sacrifice their daughter to appease Neptune's wrath, and would have done so had Perseus not arrived to kill the monster in the nick of time. As a reward, the hero was wedded to the lovely Andromeda.

Well, that was a bit of a letdown, really, but Seoul protested that it had an okay, and sort of funny ending!

By most accounts, Cassiopeia was quite happy with the match. Although she was placed in the heavens by Neptune, the sea-god saw fit to humiliate her one final time (and for all eternity). He placed her so that she is seated on her throne, with her head pointing towards the North Star Polaris. In this position, she spends half of every night upside-down.

The moral of this queen's story?

"Don't brag that's you're prettier than goddesseses!!"

Science wasn't Gany's favorite subject, but it wasn't that awful. He managed to make it through 3 labs before the end of the class- though he thought maybe if he'd had a better lab partner he could've done more... Or maybe if he'd just worked alone, he was better when he worked alone. Partnering up seemed to be every teacher's favorite thing to do, though. Gross.

Oh!! Astronomy!! Perigee knew a LOT about astronomy- that was their dad's favorite thing! They learned all sorts of stuff about the night sky from him, and from his books. After spotting a particularly cool (in their opinion) constellation in the sky that night, they set to work digging through Starlet's books to find more information to write down for Flora.

Draco is the Dragon constellation, and it has a lot of meanings to it. My favorite one is that it's one of the dragons a goddess killed because it was part of the war with the gods that went on for 10 years. After she killed it, she tossed it into the air and it froze in place before it could be righted. The biggest, brightest star is its head! It used to be a pole star, but because the planet shifts over time it isn't any more. My dad says it will become the pole star again though, a long long long time in the future.

There! That would do it. The next class period, they handed in their paper, then went to wait and see what they'd all be talking about next.

Constellations, huh? Naoya couldn't really see any of the constellations he knew from home at the academy, so he supposed he'd have to try and see one from Asphodel that seemed interesting enough to look into.

I saw a lot of constellations I didn't recognize... but the one I picked out is the Little Dipper- because its used for navigation! The pole star is in it, so people can use it to tell where north is no matter what. Except for people that live in the north... then they can't really use it because they're already there and the star is too high for them. But I think that's pretty cool that stars can tell directions.

Naoya handed in their paper the next class period, then settled in with a new interest in astronomy.

Lalia liked stargazing, though they didn't really know much about astronomy itself or the stories behind the constellations... So this assignment was pretty cool- honestly.

The constellation I saw was the Lion - um... I think its called Leo? Every year there's some meteor showers that come from it, which is pretty cool. There was a story about how it was made... a hero saved some maidens from a bad lion by snapping its back in half!! One of the Gods decided to put the lion in the sky as a mark of his achievement.

Lalia hoped that was enough... they really weren't all that interested in knowing so many details about the stars, honestly. They were just pretty to look at. And if they had to learn about them in depth, they'd rather learn in class than have to look it up by themself...

Tybalt enjoyed astronomy, though... only from a very casual standpoint. They didn't go out of their way to look things up or anything.. It was kinda hard not to have SOME interest at least in stargazing with a dad that looked like the night sky, and markings on one's own body that kinda looked like constellations.

That being said, it took them a bit to find one to write about.

I found the Scales constellation. Or I guess to some people its scorpion claws. The scales are supposed to represent justice, which I guess makes sense? There isn't really anything special about it in the science-y sense. They found some planets around one of the stars? I guess that's cool? I didn't really know what we were supposed to be looking for on this part.

Tybalt figured that was good enough, or at least, it would have to be good enough. They didn't have anything more to add, after all. And they figured they shouldn't make anything up, the teacher would probably know if they did.

Hadrian was more into rock stars than actual stars, but he guess that some of the mythology surrounding the constellations were pretty cool. Like this dude named Perseus who had a constellation named after him. Once he was ready, he scribbled his assignment down.

Perseus is a constellation named after this guy who had to kill something called a Gorgon and bring its head back for a king's wedding gift. Gross. But anyway, he killed the Gorgon while it was sleeping and then took it to another place where he save a lady by using the head to turn this monster she was going to be sacrificed to into stone. Way cool, right? Except then he married her.

Pleased with his work, Hadrian doodled in the margins before he turned it in. He supposed this astronomy stuff wasn't so bad. But maybe he'd just like a class on mythology instead. Those guys were pretty cool.
