The smaller beast cried out, collapsing to the ground after the last blow landed. Was it dead? Had they finished it off?

Not quite, it seemed; the creature was still, but breathing.

A furious roar echoed off the stony chamber walls. With renewed strength and power, the elder beast swept aside the teenage Squires in desperation to reach the lesser. It crouched low over the other in a protective stance, hissing and eyes darting to and fro. The battle had turned. It sought out the gaze of its master for orders on what to do next...

...but he was gone, slipping away through the doors at the rear of the room. He paused only to glance back, see the situation, and give a brief nod upwards with his chin. Good enough. Go.

Interpreting its master's orders, the larger beast nudged the smaller, keeping up its hostile display towards the Squires, lashing out at any to come too close. Stirred to movement, if weak, the lesser attempted to rise to its claws behind the larger's protective stance. They were backing away, slowly, never turning their backs on the Squires once they were all in view.

At that moment, a massive blow to the door leading back to the foyer shook the portal as well as the walls and floor surrounding. The door, previously slammed tightly shut, was jarred open by the blow, grating harshly over the stone floor. In the open crack, a tiny shape, a mere blur passing by, may have been seen by the most observant. Then, all was quiet and stillness beyond. The light that streamed in from the gate beyond created a low, dark shadow cast by something just beyond the door's opening. A form, prone on the ground just outside the door.

Any Squire who moved to investigate would make the horrible discovery of a fourth comrade, lost to this dark fortress...

*****

Nephi has perished.

*****

Their former comrade lay prone, covered in open wounds and signs of blunt impact trauma. Whatever had attacked him though...was gone.

The insectoid beasts took the distraction as an opportunity to flee after their master into the darkness past the two doors at the opposite end of the room.

((Excellent work, everyone! As this was something of a test run, the beasts have fled and the Squires are safe...for now. Everyone did very well with the battle system and we have made notes on how everything went compared to our pre-tests. There will be more battles to come and this helped us pinpoint some areas that could use some tweaking.

There will be no more prompts for Part 2. Please use this time to post your Squires' reactions, as well as doing any healing or cleansing that your Squires may need in the meantime. We will start back up with Part 3 after V-Day shenanigans!))

Genesis was already staring at the door, her attention brought back to the battle by the glancing blow from the smaller creature as it writhed in its own agony. Genesis was ready to put it out of its misery, but the larger beast got between them. As they began inching away, Genesis' head began to turn rapidly searching the room. Where had that tainted pretender ran off to?

It was in that moment that the door behind them shook again, causing Genesis to completely turn around. When she saw the doorway was open she quickly ran across the room, jumping and climbing over the various rubble that stood in her way. In her head she knew she should remain focused on the creatures, but some feeling foreign to her was pulling her towards the door.

She stopped when she got to the doorway, not daring to step outside and potentially cut herself off from the others if something else was to happen. She didn't need to go any further anyways. Genesis froze, holding her hand up to tell any others whose attention might have been drawn not to come any further. They didn't need to see this. She stared blankly at the form of the squire whom she had journeyed with to collect the artifacts that were supposed to protect them during this mission. A lot of good they seemed to be doing...The memory flashed in her mind, as fresh as the wounds on his broken body.

What could she even tell the others now? She couldn't seem to rip her eyes away, as gruesome as it was to look at Nephi's lifeless body, how could she face the ones that were still alive?

Genesis did her best to mentally separate from what had happened. She closed her eyes, she would at least stop looking at him, even if she couldn't turn away. "Nephi has fallen." She announced, now that she had spoken those words she somehow found she could turn to look at the others in various shape from the battle. There wasn't time to mourn, she needed to focus on the living. Genesis glanced at Alethea, covered in the creature's goo, and Clarux and Eligor had both taken some wounds. She needed to focus on them, there was nothing she could do for Nephi.

Genesis walked slowly back to the group, letting the light flow down into her hand as she did. A tear seemed to glisten down her cheek, everything she felt right now felt foreign to her, and the world seemed quiet except for a strange ringing in her ears. Genesis stopped when she got to Eligor, touching her glowing hands to his wounds. She wanted to say something, something like she had after they had lost the others, but she had given up on words for now.

Genesis used 2mp to cast Pure Light on Eligor, healing him for 30(23)pts.

Dante watched with wary eyes as the beasts took their leave. Odd as it was, he was actually a little glad they hadn't had to kill either of them. Though, he thought as he gripped his staff defensively, it would be worse if either of them were to come back later. His breathing came heavy, the adrenaline of battle still pounding in his ears. His tongue felt dry and sticky in his mouth. He spat and licked his lips to try and dispel that feeling.

Once it was clear they were alone, Dante sat on the ground to try and rest, but just as he did the massive door blew open by some unseen force. His heart leapt into his throat and he yelped and scrambled in a panic to his feet, staff at the ready. But nothing attacked. In fact, there was nothing at all to be seen outside in the foyer. Except that Nephi should have been out there. Dante shook his head rapidly and turned away. He knew in his heart of hearts what must have happened, but he wouldn't look. He couldn't. The image of Elda, Agnus, and Infernos would never leave him. He wouldn't desecrate Nephi's memory the same way. He instead thought about his delicate face and wry smile. He imagined Nephi seated on a pillow in the library, or cheerfully leaning against the arena wall to watch other Squires in their sparring. He recalled his laugh, and his sing-song tsk tsk whenever one of them broke some rule or another.

Dante twirled his staff restlessly. Others would investigate to verify what he already knew about Nephi. Someone would call if, by the mercy of the Guardians, he was still alive and needed healing. Until then, he looked around at the lot of them. They were all worse for wear after the battle, but Alethea in particular looked very...harrowed around the edges. Dante approached her and tucked his staff into the crook of his elbow. "Be well," he signed with a shadow of a smile, and hummed the four notes for Cleanse.

Katya gripped her bow tightly and turned away from the sight of what was left of Nephi's body, a grim countenance upon her.

The young demon resisted the urge to hurl her weapon across the room in frustration. She couldn't understand why she didn't feel the same grief she did at the main gate. In its place was a rage that she hadn't felt before. And more than a hint of desperation.
She had hardly caused a scratch to the two large insectile monsters, and upon reflection, she couldn't recall having killed any of the small fuzzy ones, either. Part of her wanted them to come back. There was blood on her mind, and she wished she had been able to spill more.

She had never in her life considered she would wish for that.

With a long, ragged exhale Katya brought her mind back from that brink and considered the state of their mission. The enemy had fled, and they needed to regroup- again- and proceed as soon as practical. Assuming the pae they'd come to rescue were still alive, finding them remained more important than chasing down the vile creatures that had accosted them.

No, they're still alive. They've got to be. The Guardians had a plan. This was important- they weren't in this hellhole for nothing. Katya still had plenty of arrows- and she was more or less unscathed and still full of energy. Given that, she watched as the others began helping each other back to fighting condition. Eligor had received considerable damage, as had Alethea and Clarux. With Genesis already tending to Eligor, and Alethea still looking slightly less worn than Clarux, Katya approached the other demon and produced salve and a bandage from the pack that still sat on her back. "My magic never got to the levels Tansa had been hoping for, but I still know the traditional methods." She applied the bandage while channeling a little magic at the same time- the two methods of healing working together well enough.

Katya used 2mp to heal Clarux, restoring her to full health.

It seemed almost too abrupt, how suddenly the beasts withdrew and broke away, fleeing after their cowardly master into the shadows beyond the twin doors. Blood pounding in his ears, the heat of battle upon him, Eligor may have been foolish enough to follow had the earth-shaking crash not followed soon after. It startled the mage enough to regain his senses, becoming aware of his comrades, their situation, and the now-open door behind them...

Genesis moved before any of the rest of them could. He started to follow, then thought better of it. What good would it do? Best not to crowd in unless there was something to be done...which given Genesis' flat declaration, there wasn't. It was too late. The heaviness that settled over his heart was no less weighty than the one that had accompanied the loss of their other companions, yet there was a sort of numbness dulling his response. Was this really happening?

The end was near, she could sense it. As the smaller beast fell, Lailah's adrenaline surged; she could see the kill. Feel it. Rage flashed across her face as that was ripped away, the beasts disappearing after their master. Her vision flickered red; no, her victory was stolen! How dare--?!?

The door behind them shook, scraping open with a harsh grating sound. Lailah whirled, glaring towards the hallway and still hesitating on continuing pursuit. Genesis' announcement and the sight of the fallen form beyond the door sent another wave of rage through the angel. Dammit, again?!?

This accursed place seemed determined to keep separating them and picking them off like strays.

The thought was sobering, cutting through the anger to still her tensed muscles, preventing a foolish headlong plunge after the retreating beasts. They could be waiting in ambush just beyond the doors, ready to cut off anyone foolish enough to follow alone.

Lailah paused, ducking to clean her blades on one of the fallen squirrel creatures with a sneer. Afterwards, she stood, glancing at the others as she sheathed her weapons. "We're getting picked off like this. No one go off on their own. Everyone stick together," she growled, turning wary eyes towards the far doors to keep watch while the others healed. She wanted to pursue, but even she knew that would be foolish at present. Perhaps the others would realize the weight of what she'd said, when it came from Lailah, normally the first to go off on her own.

Eligor shot Genesis a grateful look as her healing hands neared his wounds, easing the pain. He wanted to say something in response to her obvious emotional strain...but the words wouldn't come. Instead, he reached up when she finished, laying a hand on her arm briefly with a muttered, "Thanks."

His eyes then turned towards Lailah's harsh tone, and as surprising as it was to hear from the crimson angel, she was right. Everyone who had been separated from the group was now gone. And still they had no idea how far their goal may be. Safety seemed to lay in keeping the group together. They needed to regroup now, reassess, then move forward as one. His wounds cared for, he quickly assessed their performance in the last battle. Clarux had taken some hard hits, but he noted Katya was already caring for her nearby. Good. Aside from her and himself, he turned to the next most wounded.

"Alethea? Are you alright?" he asked, focusing his magic into his hands as he neared. Glowing with the power of Pure Light, he reached to help heal her wounds, searching her face with his eyes for a gauge on her emotional state. Of course, they were all shaken to some degree...
