Sighing a little through his nose, he put the highlighter down and closed his book. "I'm sorry you had to see that," he said as he curled an arm around Chel, lightly scratching her back. Simultaneously, Jack was making a mental note to clean her shoes later before they started to reek. "Not all Death work is related to that. Maybe request more recons instead?"

"They won't. Nobody will study your artifact unless you request it." What was one magical object against a whole boatload already in their care?
"Thank you for trusting me," Jack replied in kind as he slipped the pen back into the metal slot, smiling slightly. Not just for the intimate sharing, but for entering that sterile white room at all. "I think you've earned your rest."

"And you gotta sleep too," she told him sternly, nudging his arm. She knew all too well he was probably running on nothing by this point. Sometimes it felt like her purpose on earth was reminding Jack to be a human. "Think I've earned a piggy back ride back?"
Well he was no Owain but she could make do.

"You don't gotta stop," she told him after hearing the highlighter shut.
To his suggestion she made a noncommital noise. It wasn't bad that she had to see it, it was bad that it existed at all. Going on recons wouldn't stop them from torturing nearly innocent people.

"Braindead," he excused.
It wasn't her job to try and revolutionize how the division operated, Jack wanted to say, but that wouldn't make her feel any better. Chel had a bigger heart than he did and always would; he was neither for nor against the torture but more interested in if there were results that justified it. After his stint in the Sahara last year, he frankly had to be numb about the topic.
Lacking anything that could solve the problem, he popped an earbud out with his free hand and offered it to her. Smothering the world with music was a safe fallback when all else failed.

Jack scoffed because he was expected to, but sleep sounded good for his headache right about now. "One of these days you owe me one," he joked as he crouched and allowed her on, Owain tittering with his leafy noises as he did. "One stop to drop the report off and then we'll head home." +

Chel was glad now that she hadn't turned on the music player like she was going to. She took the earbud without much fuss, only moving her head to meet it and then escaping back into Jack. Maybe some people would be annoyed that Jack wasn't hearing her out fully, but it was enough for her that he wasn't arguing.
"S'no wonder they hate us. I hate us."

Chel hopped up knees first, easily fitting around Jack's frame. It was funny how much he'd changed in one short year. She kissed the side of his head before settling for the departure.
"Think I owe you more than one by now." The report was eventually tossed onto a desk (literally tossed and Jack probably wasn't very happy about it). By the time they got to the stairs Chel got off because "I just wanna walk that's all" (Jack was too tired for two stairs of flights and she knew it).

Completely by happenstance, Pink Floyd began to play.
"It's a shitty life," Jack agreed. "At least it pays well. And you've still got your connections over there."

Another noncommital noise. Connections didn't mean much if they died off or hated her. She actually admired Shun a little bit more for trusting her, even as mildly as he did.
Normally Chel would have been much more catering to Jack's efforts, and even now she was debating asking him if he had eaten yet (when did you last sleep? How MUCH did you eat- do you want more?) but at the moment she was more like a sack of potatoes than a person. Even Chel had bad, grouchy days.

Having done his best, he decided it was best to just sit the rest of her foul mood out. Still scratching her back, he took to quietly humming along with the song and eventually laid back, feeling exhaustion slowly come over him.
At length he asked, "Want me to check what's for dinner?"

"If you're hungry I can make somethin'," she told him, though the way she was sitting didn't lend to getting up any time soon.

"I know you're tired." He pat her back. "Sit this one out. Worse comes to worse, we have juice." It was a semblance of a joke.

"You don't know nothin'," she retorted, but there was appreciation in her bite.
She half wanted to make Jack carry her to the kitchen so she didn't have to move, but she eventually worked up the effort to heave herself off Jack. The earbud fell out because she forgot it was in and it made her make a face. One more thing to add to the list.
More to annoy him that to caress, she put her hands on either side of his face. "Make me everythin' I like and tell me I'm pretty."

He opened one eye to look at her and puckered his face. "Chicken parmesan mac and cheese pizza pancakes it is," he declared. "And you, babe," he slipped out of her grasp, leaning forward to steal an obnoxious kiss, "are sexy."
