"Just 'cause I don't like school don't mean ********' kryptonite." She looked at the outstretched arm with reluctance. "Y'left me in the museum too. Beginnin' to think yer tryin' to ditch." She laughed something low and took the arm.

I fear he would cage you one day.

She hadn't realized what Owain meant; that for some reason, this love felt lonely.

"Let's get some food first."

"Can't just give him a rock eye and be like yup here you go," she said with a pointed roll of her eyes. "Help me pick out some booze later- you know better than me." She'd get the eye for the joke definitely, but there had to be something substantive.

She followed Jack into the shoe place and let go of his shirt, staring at the walls and walls of shoes. Unlike Jack she had no inkling that these might have been low quality, and even less knowledge that they were somehow incorrect to buy for Abbi.

She spoke in low tones, just in case he didn't want his secret known in a public location. "Sooo I'll leave this to you. Pick out a pair for you too. I'll buy~"

Further fire from one little joke, more perceived offenses in his strange mood: are you in control of this? do you even know what you're doing? do you care? Funny how simple failures like weapon control and park watching felt when weighed together. How many more little mistakes would he make? When would the large ones appear to really tip the balance? If Jack had known how quickly the doubts would have risen, he wouldn't have brought Chel at all; this wasn't anything he wanted her, or anyone that mattered, to see.

"Food sounds good," was all he said as he tugged her along.

"I knew that," Chel said smugly. "Why you think I made curry that one time? S'cause I asked Finn and he said spicy s**t."

She counted on her fingers and said, "Ummm ... Ooh I know- a ********' classic. If you were on an island with one thing what would it be? And no sayin' flare gun or cell phone 'cause that's stupid as ********>" After a second or two, she tacked on, "No Barbara neither, I know you."

Shoes kicked off, lazy on the bed. They had done a good day's worth of work though- Jack had gotten his little pings everywhere and they had at least made a triangulation of sorts that gave them a good indication where to look. It was, as Jack had said, the first day of "scouting." The second day would be pursuit, and the third would be capture.

Because things always went according to plan.

Chel had actually wanted some time along when they got back. She could feel Jack slipping from her, burnt out on the static of being around people too much, and she wanted to give him that space. So she explored the hotel for a while (with the same insecure awe and wonder as she had so many hours ago), went to the gym they had, then hit the bar for a few drinks and had now wandered back to the room feeling much better (though whether that was from endorphins, alcohol, space or a mixture of all three was a mystery).

She didn't say much when she returned, just gave Jack a wave and then headed into the bathroom. Her first thought was a shower, but then ...

Deus didn't exactly have giant bathtubs.

It was food for thought as she meticulously began wiping off her makeup and taking the gauges out of her ears. The piercings, luckily, were non-reactive metals so they could stay, but the plugs were no good. Makeup she normally took off at night and showered in the morning, but if she was going to bathe she didn't want to come out of the bathroom looking like a emo bride.

"Jack Hawthooooooorn," Chel crooned from atop the counter (the counters were so big she could literally sit on them- it was amazing). "Come heeere."

She what-- "You cheated!" he accused her, looking more on the verge of laughing incredulously than anything serious. "I thought the point was to guess, not ask around. Wow. And you just ******** dangled chocolate pancakes over me this whole time."

Shaking his head, he tossed a fry at her face. Rude. Double rude for heading him off and crossing Barbara off the list.

"A boat, obviously."

We're not here on vacation, he almost said. "Not from here," he muttered back instead. "If we're getting shoes, we might try an actual store. Or there's a guy, The Poet Sandal-Maker of Athens. No," he added, "I didn't just make that s**t up. Hermes stuff, though, I doubt it. She might just be getting a little statue at this rate."

While Chel explored the hotel, Jack had explored the room (the floor felt so nice barefoot), the bed, and a little indulgently, the wine. Not so much as to even get a buzz, but enough to at least relax and unwind as he went over his notes. The noise of the city took some time to clear from his head, and it was all too tempting to just take a nap after hoofing it around Athens. But he vented his earlier self-irritation into work, and he was idly considering the omens they were pointing towards when Chel called for him.

"Whaaaaaat," he called back as he got up from the chair he had pulled up next to the shelf of books, stretched, and shuffled his way to the bathroom.

"Now that yer in here yer trapped," she said, slowly letting the sentence fall into a giggle at nothing. She scooted off the counter and fluidly moved behind him, shutting the door and spreading herself over it to form a solid barricade.

There was something mischievous, but more parts tipsy on her face, unreadable at best. "Ssssstrip playboy."

"You need help off that high horse there?" she said with a snort. "I'm not gettin' her some dumb statue. I want cool wingy shoes now." Despite not even knowing Abbi's shoe size.

The store owner was coming over and Chel quickly waved, in her best voice saying, "No no, we're fine."

She nudged Jack's side to say yes we're fine aren't we. "Well .... hmm. How far's this poetic ********>

"S'not cheatin'. I never once said y'couldn't ask people and in fact I told y'to at one point." She crossed her arms looking all too smug. "You just ain't clever enough."

But the smug look was ruined by the flailing that followed the french fry. "A boat? Really? Yer totally takin' the fun outta this s**t." She stretched herself back and said, "I would bring a knife. Knife's useful and fun."

"You mean I'm clever enough, clearly," he retorted with a smirk. "Knife is good too. Let's see...What's one of your guilty pleasures?"

He gave the vendor a brief smile that was enough to have him move on his way. "I'll Google it," he told Chel as he turned to leave. "But there won't be Hermes shoes, I can tell you that right now. You'd have to go find something to glue onto them for wings." He made glue sound as distasteful as possible.

He gave Chel a long, slow look. "Chel, how much did you drink out there?"

"Not a lot, not a lot," she said, leaning against the door. Of course it wouldn't be so simple. Always missionzoned forever.

"C'mooon we don't got baths back at Deus. It'll be fun. We can play music 'n everythin'."
