day 1 - deal

"Anxiety?" He furrowed his brow as he tossed some toiletries into a ziploc bag, then scoffed. "Anxiety. Christ, if that's how she feels just investigating a school, how does she manage bigger s**t?"

He did not want to have this conversation and almost regretted saying yes to Jack's proposition of sharing a room.

"We figure it out," said Gale evenly, his eyes following Jack's movements. The eyepatch had been removed for the sake of the mission, which meant that his form was a little blurry, outlines fuzzy. "You can't tell me you haven't backed out of something for the same reasons."

day 1—deal

A dry laugh left him. "The very thought. I'm offended, Gentry. Just because I dated your girlfriend doesn't mean I'm as weak as her."

With the rest of his stuff piled into the suitcase or in his arms, Jack gestured casually as he pleased for Gale to lead the way and unlock the door.

day 1 - deal

Jack was fixed with a studious look, rather than a scowl for once.

"Just because you deny it, also doesn't make it untrue," said Gale, easing himself out of the chair. He picked up his notebook and made his way across the room, exiting the first room and leading Jack down the hall to the second. It was only three doors down on the right, and Gale slid the keycard into the slot, pushing it open and gesturing for Jack to enter as he pleased.

The room inside was not nearly as fancy as the first, but there were two full sized beds, as well as a somewhat comfortable armchair. A TV hung on the wall opposite the beds, and the bathroom was decently sized, even for giants like Jack.

"I'm on that one," said Gale, gesturing to the first bed, which left the one closer to the window for Jack.

day 1 - deal

Jack dropped his bag off at the appropriate bed and immediately fell atop it, knocking several pillows off. "Me, nervous? I thought you had one gimp eye, not two. Way too early for you to start projecting her bullshit onto me, roomie," he said airily, turning his back to Gale and stretching out. "See you in two hours, or whenever our illustrious leader decides to blow the whistle."

He smiled a little, in spite of everything, in spite of the almost overwhelming desire to smack Jack upside the head with the notebook he was currently holding.

"The more you deny things, the less I actually believe you," said Gale lightly, and sat down on his own bed, flipped the book open, and went back to work.

BEGIN: PHASE 2

The first two days at the school had gone without incident for the group, only a handful of staff or students truly noticing anything off about their ragtag group. No one had followed them to the hotel, all was safe for now.

The third day dawned on them without incident either. Lex again made breakfast for the group, should they want it, and looked far more rested now that an abnormally large stalk of asparagus was sleeping in a different room.

--

In the conference room, Lex didn't have much to say. "Keep making connections, keep following up on any leads you find." The tall man stated, drumming his fingers on the hard wooden table. "Every time I ask a student about any new medicine they may be trying, they clam up. Something's here - find it."

THE OOC
The team goes back to the school and runs in to a few strange occurrences involving scared students and suspicious huddles of people. Players respond to all prompts.

-You overhear mention of the stuff from several students who don't notice you.

- You find someone frightened and shaking in the bathroom, but they won't tell you what's wrong or what scared them.

- You see a group huddled together, and glimpse money changing hands. Later you recognize one of them, hiding in a janitor's closet.

Another day, not another dollar. More puking teenagers (what was in the food? He'd blame Jack, though he never trusted cafeteria food as a high school student) and sniffling noses. The most exciting part of his job that morning had been when a kid came in with stomach cramps and the beginning signs of hallucinations; but he was just dehydrated from playing too much soccer.

Lunch came again, and Lex had made sure to run by the convenience store that morning, a shitty looking deli sandwich in hand - but dammit if he wasn't hungry. The lifer had found an empty classroom to dine in, avoiding the too nosy staff that looked about as dull as their minds were. Or, it was usually empty; today it housed five students speaking in hushed, rapid whispers. A Benjamin went from one kid to another, two more of them procuring 50 dollar notes, and one - a scrappy looking affair of dirty blonde hair and Raggedy Andy clothing stuffing all the money in his pockets.

"Hey." Lex started, taking a heavy step in approach to the boys. They looked up like started meerkats and jolted right by him, the scruffy one shoulder checking him on the way out.

< You could have caught them - all of them. >

<< I could, but then we wouldn't draw the necessary attention. >>

Without further ado other than to turn on the room's lights, Lex took a seat on the desk and unwrapped the ham sandwich that smelled very strongly of plastic and fish.

He'd forgotten how much gossip happened in the lunch line. While Jack's connections lied on the food worker side, he had an interesting time filtering through idle chitchat he didn't give two shits about (and god, how much more petty it was to hear them talk about certain cliques like they even ******** mattered in the world). There was indeed something circulating at the school by the sounds of it, so thankfully he wasn't wearing a damn hairnet for nothing. The problem was, naturally, the kids were being infuriatingly vague while in public, and the few instances he forgot himself, Jack accidentally caught their eye and watched them clamp up as they passed by.

Hopefully the others were having better luck. As it was, he saw only a few vaguely nauseous looking students, but nothing concrete enough to warrant pulling them from the cafeteria.

---

Dawson grew a little more nervous as the hours ticked by. He'd seen several guys puking in the bathroom, though after helping them clean up, they still wouldn't talk. Bad signs, right? What had to be such a big secret, honestly...He didn't understand why someone hadn't reported it to the principal or something. While he was a quiet addition trying to be in the background, he kept seeing particular groups of kids hanging around shady places, exchanging money for...hell, he couldn't see. His costume was way too God damn hot. Damn his beard.

The true highlight of his day, however, if that was what he was going to call it, was when he heard something shift in the utilities closet between classes. First instinct? Jinkies. Gotta be a monster or something clearly. He had considered calling for backup, but that would have been particularly wussy of him, and Dawson Kimberly Grace was a little tired of getting kicked around for being so soft.

So, hands trembling, he opened the door. A second later, he sighed in relief. Just a kid.

A rather scared looking kid.

Nearly forgetting his disguise for a moment, Dawson squatted down and offered a hand up. "You okay, buddy?"

The kid, a girl with a mop of blond hair who reminded Dawson of a friendly scarecrow, began to turn as red as an apple. The trainee couldn't understand a word of the mumbles that came out of the kid's mouth before she shoved her way out without a glance back. Blinking, Dawson turned to follow when something caught his eye.

On the floor was a piece of paper. A closer glance told him that the handwriting looked a little familiar: like the kind on the love letters he'd started finding in his locker.

Huh. Probably not worthy enough to bring up at the meeting in the hotel, but an interesting find nevertheless. She'd been in one of the groups making weird deals, though...Hrm.

The final thirty minutes of his shift, and the shifty deli sandwich had been making his stomach rumble and churn for the past forty five minutes. He should have just not eaten, or risked the school lunch, or even taken the walk to Burger King - no, not Burger King. Not even avoiding the runs was worth the tasteless food served by the self supposed monarch of beef sandwiches.

No students had come into the office for the past hour, so now would be as good a time as any to settle it. Getting up quickly and locking the door on the way out, Lex went straight for the staff bathroom - only to find that every stall was filled. (He blamed Jack, again.) A desperate whine combined with a sigh, stomach groaning in unison.

The restroom by the History classrooms was his next option. On his way he heard mutterings among the students of "Candy." The faux school nurse would have ignored it entirely, but teenagers didn't talk about Snickers with the same nervousness and wide eyed cautious hostility of an inexperienced drug dealer. He'd seen plenty of them in the clubs - they were so easy to scare out.

The churning of his bowels reminded Lex just why he should ignore these kids, though. Just for the moment.

Hurrying in and slamming the door, Lex was greeted with a groan that was not his stomach. A pale fifteen year old lay on the floor in front of him, the boy on his side and clutching at his stomach in cold sweats.

"Tell me your symptoms." Lex demanded politely, kneeling and checking the boy's forehead with the back of his hand for a fever. The kid said nothing, just moaning more and weakly trying to shove Lex's hand away. Lex's eyes beamed - they had their lead. Drawing on his enhanced strength (and the fact that this kid obviously lived off Mountain Dew and Doritos - he probably weighed 90 pounds, soaking wet), Lex hauled the kid over his shoulder and took him to the nurse's office where he was deposited and Lex made a quick run to the now empty staff lavatory.

CRASH

Glass shatters with the ferocity of thunder, spilling over the plush carpet of the hotel room. You are awake and alert, a malevolent presence can be felt by all. The salty, clammy air of the coastal town sweeps through the room, adding to the goosebumps of your unwanted wake up call.

Someone tries to turn the lights on, but it seems the breakers to your room specifically have been cut. Nothing else seems to be off, though. Not just yet...

OOC
THIS IS A 24 HOUR WARNING! I know I've been loose with these deadlines, but I really need to get this train a-rollin'! Have a great night everyone! biggrin

PHASE THREE

Nothing had moved, no one had done anything so far to anticipate or prepare for the coming threat. A figure moved in the darkness, stumbling and more than a little fumbling with heavy foot falls and grunts. Curses muttered under a slurred voice, clearly angry and violent.

The shadow stepped forward, finally seeming to have found its bearings. An object was pulled from its pocket, a bright yellow crackling into life along a series of runes. The occupants of the room could see a sloppy smile from the figure as it took an offensive stance, ready to lunge at the closest person to it.

It made no sense, how the person had gotten to the top floor of the hotel and managed to bus their window. Blood dripped from the assailant's fingertips, or what could only be assumed to be.

Regardless, this one thing was clear: their position had been compromised.

Lex had anticipated the main dealer of the drugs, the candies, to find them eventually - just not like this. He'd hoped for a confrontation that wouldn't cost him (because hell if Deus was paying for that window), but here they were- and here he was.

"I'm authorizing you all to use your weapons." Lex hissed, summoning Regal in a swift motion and firing the gun at the window-breaker. Lex would take the brunt of the punishment for this scene and the s**t storm it would cause, but this dealer was also supplied with runic tech. He had not been anticipating that.

Finn did not wait for authorization. Finn already had Trnyt summoned the moment the window was broken, rolling out of bed with the deadly looking, spiked and bladed lance in hand.

No words needed to be spoken, as he maneuvered around the room, attempting not to step on the bodies of the idiots who decided the ******** floor was the best place to sleep, and also needing the room to swing his weapon without actually hitting anything else because <******** if he could afford to pay for that s**t either.

Dawson had taken a couch this time, having found that his position last time had not been so comfortable, and thus was sprawled when the first sounds of an invader startled him awake. Bleary, half-asleep, but quickly growing terrified when he saw colored runes in the dark, he fell back on instinct: summoning his shield, he squinted for Claude in the twilight and immediately moved between her and the intruder, stumbling to his feet and holding in his nerves for as long as he could.

This was what he was training for. He hoped he didn't screw up.
