Ffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu—It was all Jack could do to keep a hand on even a sliver of the beaten clone. It's unnatural quality, coupled with dehydration and rising dread, had him gagging in pure physical repulsion beside the others.

A dark cloud appeared on the horizon, moving with a swiftness that had nothing to do with wind.

"It," Kostya said, grappling with the head, "is coming." The rational part of his brain dictated that it might be another Famine horseman, rising out of the desert and coming to hunt. The irrational part, though. It felt something else, darker and sharper and superstitious. With much effort, he pressed slippery red fingers to his neck, grasping the pendant beneath his shirt and whispering the words: " Deus ex machina." Please, he thought to the higher power he didn't believe in. Please work.

Rep's stomach dropped what felt like a ******** foot inside him. He ******** remembered. The entire roof of the church simply shattered into fragments of glass and wood, raining thick splinters into the ground. One of the survivors was impaled by a falling wooden beam immediately, his eyes still open in shock, gun falling out of his hands. The second the roof fell, they poured in, hundreds of them flying and shrieking harshly like banshees, black vicious vultures in the sky screeching and slashing at anything they spotted.
They were aiming first and foremost for the trainees. One of them stopped, shadowy figure turning its yellowed eyes towards Rep, hollow mouth opening and closing to reveal thousands of layers of sharp black teeth. It hissed, reaching out one claw, ready to devour its prey- Famine had all sorts of s**t on their side, he'd watched the humans in that ******** church devoured alive as if they were ******** nothing. He'd not stood a chance and the s**t that would have happened to him if Cael wasn't there. Did they ******** stand a snowflake's chance here?
"It?" Rep said grimly. "It? That looks like a ******** them." But somehow the idea that the black moving towards them was one single entity was more chilling even than the idea of a swarm.
Kostya was bailing and he paused only to see if the other man had any luck at all.

He hacked and wiped sand from the edge of his mouth, smearing god only knew what on his face in the process, and gasped for breath. "Fffffuuu..." He threw a look over his shoulder at the growing mass of darkness and was glad he didn't eat that bar after all. Sharp teeth and hateful eyes.Jack's eyes darted about. Kostya's pendant. His. The pit. Rep's grim face. The pit again. "Go," he breathed as he pushed himself to his feet with manic need. His expression looked disgusted and fearful at his own decision. "s**t ********, go, try and go, s**t." If it had been somebody else, the gut instinct to save wouldn't have been there. But he had made a promise to that clone, and if he couldn't keep promises to himself, well, then what kind of man was he? Jack made a desperate break for the hole, clutching his pendant as if afraid it'd fly away in this rising madness.

The pendant did its job, and how. It deposited Kostya in front of the Infirmary, covered in ichorous red blood eager to reunite the dismembered pieces. Unfortunate. As nurses swarmed, Kostya let them know there'd be two-- and, well, possibly three-- on the way.

Rep looked back to Jack with panic before deciding that he wouldn't leave unless the other man did. He held Tracey out at his side, heart hammering but dead set on distracting anything that would come after Jack and the other clone they had found. He kept his pendant in his free hand.

In the back of his mind he knew it was a ludicrous bid. It was for a clone, yes, an abomination and marvel of science at the same time, but at the same time it wasn't also keeping his health as the focus; Lack needed to thank him for this brief stint into actively pursuing the betterment of someone other than himself. For someone who wore his face. And possibly had similar thought processes. Sun dried Jack wondered if this was truly what parenting meant.
He dove into the pit and landed without grace. His shield was weakening: the sand bit his skin and tore at what the sun had burned, but he didn't stop until his claws were around the clone's arm. "I told you," he rasped quickly, wheezing between breaths. "I told you I'd come back, now--hold still--" He took no chances, tugged it closer and closer with his death grip established, kicked and subdued and pinned with his legs if it so much as threatened him with insurrection, a manic yet hopeful look plastered on the hunter's face. Clones did not simply plop into one's lap so easily, and he wasn't very keen on having to fight more just to grab this frightened one if it could be saved now.
His other hand went for the pendant, and as the buzzing filled his ears Jack murmured, "Deus ex machina."

Nothing.
Maybe he had to say it louder.
Still nothing.
His hands started to shake.

The pendant continued to sit like a useless weight in his hand. Jack throttled it and tightened his grip on the clone if that was even possible, snarling,

The sky turns black as the cloud descends on the pit, beetles fill the air around jack and the clone, beetles taking stinging bites of both. medigel Every missed attempt to use the pendant is going to result in -5 hp!

Whatever deities that might exist had to be laughing. This was what he got for trying to save something other than himself, Jack thought bitterly. That was why he never should go on the front lines. The s**t that happened to people who tried to stretch themselves giving a rat's a** about others just wasn't worth it. His skin felt like it was literally crawling as the hum of beetles filled the air, and the instinct to swat and crush was overwhelming as his ears twitched. The clone felt like a deadweight in his arms. Too tired for much else, Jack threw himself to a new spot and clutched at Lack like it was a lifeline as he spat out the portal code repeatedly like a mantra, curled around the clone in a final act of defiance as he did so; this was his damn it, and he wasn't going to let go.
